Man Arrested in Death of Girlfriend's Daughter

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Fort Worth police have arrested a man in the death and sexual assault of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter.

Donald Ray Sparks was arrested Saturday on charges of capital murder and aggravated sexual assault of a child in the death of Brelynn Nobles.

Police were called to the child's home Thursday and she was taken to the hospital, where she died Friday. An autopsy determined the girl died from internal bleeding due to blunt trauma to her abdomen.

Police say Sparks, who is 20, was baby-sitting the child when she was injured. Police say the mother of the child was at work at the time and will not be charged.

Sparks remained in Mansfield city jail Sunday with bond set at $100,000. A jail official did not have any attorney information on Sparks.

 FORT WORTH -- The boyfriend of a woman whose 2-year-old daughter was beaten to death was in custody Sunday, accused of killing the toddler while he babysat her, police said.

The toddler also was sexually assaulted, police said.

Authorities arrested Donald Ray Sparks, 20, on Saturday, just a day after Brelynn Nobles died at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth.

Police said Brelynn was the victim of extensive internal trauma, hemorrhaging and head trauma.

Brelynn was pronounced dead at 12:52 a.m. at Cook Children's Medical Center.

The Tarrant County medical examiner's office has ruled her death a homicide caused by "internal hemorrhaging associated with shock." It attributed the internal hemorrhage to "blunt trauma to the abdomen suffered during an assault by another person."

At the time of her injuries, Brelynn's mother was at work, and Sparks was taking care of her, police said. Sparks was interviewed numerous time before he was arrested Saturday.

Sparks was in jail Sunday in lieu of $100,000 bail.

He is expected to be charged with capital murder and aggravated sexual assault of a child, police said.

No charges are expected to be filed against the mother, police said in a news release.

Marissa Gonzales, a spokeswoman for Child Protective Services, said in a Star-Telegram interview that Brelynn has four siblings, three of whom lived in the same home. She said the agency has placed those children -- a 4-year-old twin boy and girl and a 1-year-old girl -- with a relative.

Gonzales said the children were in good health.

According to a Fort Worth police report, officers were dispatched to a home in the 5900 block of Wilkes Drive in Fort Worth about 9:35 p.m. Wednesday. Firefighters informed officers that the girl had head trauma and was being taken to the hospital, the report states.

Gonzales described Brelynn's injuries as "severe."

Gonzales said the family had no history with CPS.

Boyfriend Arrested in Sexual Assault, Killing of 2-Year-Old

A man is in jail accused of sexually assaulting and killing his girlfriend's two-year-old daughter, Fort Worth Police said Sunday.

Police were called to a home in the 5900 block of Wilkes Drive Thursday evening after the little girl had been injured, according to a news release issued Sunday. She was transported to Cook Children's Hospital with head trauma and hemorrhaging.

While at the hospital, medical experts also realized the severely injured toddler had also been sexually assaulted.

Brelynn Nobles died Friday, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office. Her death was ruled a homicide by "blunt trauma to the abdomen."

When questioned about the incident Friday, Fort Worth police released very little information -- only saying they were "still interviewing the child's caregivers."

Nobles' mother said she was at work Thursday and her boyfriend, Donald Ray Sparks, Jr, was caring for her child. Police said they interviewed Sparks, but didn't go into detail as to what he told them.

Two warrants were issued Saturday for Sparks' arrest.

He was booked into jail Sunday for capital murder of a child under the age of 6, and aggravated sexual assault of a child. His bond has been set at $50,000.

The child's mother is not expected to face any charges, police said.

FORT WORTH, Texas - A Fort Worth man convicted of killing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter will spend the next 99 years behind bars.

Prosecutors said on April 28, 2010 Donald Ray Sparks Jr. agreed to watch Brelynn Nobles and her three siblings after their mother left for work. The woman’s cousin planned to pick them up an hour later.

But when the cousin arrived, Brelynn was naked and unconscious, lying face down on a bed. Sparks claimed she had hit her head in the bathtub.

The cousin called 911 and the toddler was rushed to the hospital but it was too late. Doctors said she had multiple injuries including to her genital area. The medical examiner determined she died from a severe blow to the abdomen.

The jury in the 396th state district court found him guilty of a lesser charge of murder but nonetheless handed him the 99-year sentence. He would have faced life in prison without parole if convicted of capital murder.

Prosecutors Alana Minton and Kim D'Avignon told jurors during opening statements that the child died of abdominal injuries from a beating after she had soiled her underpants.

A close friend of the mother's testified that she had agreed to watch the children while the mother worked as a dancer but that she arrived late from church. By the time she got there, the child was unconscious.
