Police: Bone Found In River Not Haleigh's

Putnam County Investigators Searched River In April For Missing Girl

POSTED: Monday, June 21, 2010
UPDATED: 6:05 pm EDT June 21, 2010

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- Putnam County investigators said a human bone that was found in the St. Johns River in April did not belong to Haleigh Cummings.

The bone is that of a long-dead Native American, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Investigators said the discovery is not that unusual, given the number of Native American burial grounds in Putnam County.

The determination was made by forensic anthropologist Mike Warren, the director of the C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory at the University of Florida, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Investigators searched the river for several days in April in connection with the Haleigh case. They said they found two cinder blocks, which were sent to a lab to be tested.

At the time, Sheriff Jeff Hardy said Haleigh, the 5-year-old girl who disappeared from her Satsuma home in February 2009, was likely dead, and the investigation had moved from a missing person case to a homicide investigation. In a news release Monday, the Sheriff's Office said the case is still considered an active criminal investigation.

Haleigh's family said they never once believed the girl's body would be found in the river.

"She's out there somewhere alive," said Annette Sykes, Haleigh's great-grandmother. "Unless they can prove to me she's not, then this family is looking for a live little girl."

"Every day is about finding Haleigh," said Theresa Neves, Haleigh's grandmother. "You get up in the morning and pray this is the day, and you go to bed each night and pray."

Neves said she told Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, that the bone found by investigators was not Haleigh's.

"He's glad that everyone knows that the bones aren't Haleigh's," Neves said.

Misty Cummings, Haleigh's former stepmother and the last person investigators said saw Haleigh the night she vanished, was seen at the river being questioned by investigators during their search.

Investigators said they got a tip that led them to the Shell Harbor Road Boat Ramp, a place they had not searched before. Sources have told Channel 4 the tip came from Hank Croslin Jr., Cummings' brother.

Misty Cummings, Hank Croslin Jr. and Ronald Cummings, Haleigh's father, are all in jail on drug charges unrelated to the Haleigh case.

Haleigh Cummings Case Update

2010-6-21 by: Lt. Johnny Greenwood

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous requests for information and interviews regarding the article published in the Gainesville Sun this morning (6/21). Mike Warren, the Director of the C. A. Pound Human Identification Lab at the University of Florida, released information that a human bone was found during the underwater search at the boat ramp on Shell Harbor Road which was conducted in April, 2010. Sheriff Hardy realizes the importance of keeping the public informed in this case. Even though it has been a firm policy during the Haleigh Cummings investigation not to discuss items recovered during searches, he asked that clarification on this article be released to clear up any misunderstandings.

During the search of the St. Johns River near the Shell Harbor Boat Ramp, a bone was recovered. The bone was identified by Mike Warren, a certified forensic anthropologist, as belonging to a human. Due to Warren’s expertise, he was quickly able to determine that the bone did not belong to Haleigh Cummings, and was most likely that of a Native American. Uncovering bones belonging to Native Americans is not uncommon in this area due to the large number of Native Americans that once settled here.

The Haleigh Cummings case is still considered an active criminal investigation. Specific information regarding items recovered during searches, or the details of forensic examinations, cannot be discussed at this time. Members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will not be participating in any formal interviews or providing statements regarding this information.

Haleigh, I will not forget you........from a distance.......I wonder more and more, how many local power players who may be in LE may know something.....sorry if this offends anyone, it is the only excuse I can come up with for the fact that she has not been found, that daddy has successfully escaped jail time until now.....etc......

Haleigh search netted old bone

By Kristin Chambers
Published: Tuesday, June 22, 2010 1:26 AM EDT
Authorities confirmed Monday that a human bone was discovered at the Shell Harbour boat ramp in April where a search for Haleigh Cummings was conducted, despite earlier saying no human remains were found.

Mike Warren, director of the C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory at the University of Florida in Gainesville, confirmed that the bone was not related to the missing child and was instead believed to be of a Native American.

The three-day search for the child ended on April 15 after dozens of divers searched below the murky waters of the St. Johns River and located items that were sent to several independent labs for analysis.

Standing under the shade of an oak tree to address reporters later that afternoon, Sheriff Jeff Hardy said no body or human remains were found relevant to the Haleigh case.

He did say the status of the case had changed from a missing persons investigation to a homicide.

Following rumors that Haleigh's body had been found in the search, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office on April 21 issued a statement saying deputies "had an anthropologist at the scene that identified all 'biological' items that were recovered as being non-human."

Authorities did say an anthropologist from the University of Florida analyzed all items recovered on the scene, which was said to have included alligator claws and teeth and multiple animal bones.
Uncovering bones belonging to Native Americans is not uncommon in this area due to the large number that once settled here," sheriff's spokesman Lt. Johnny Greenwood said in a statement Monday.

Greenwood said Monday's statement was issued "to clear up any misunderstandings."

Greenwood also repeated Monday that the Haleigh case is still considered an active investigation and continued the department's practice of not discussing the lingering case.

"Specific information regarding items recovered during searches, or the details of forensic examinations, cannot be discussed at this time," he said. "Members of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office will not be participating in any formal interviews or providing statements regarding this information."

Haleigh was reported missing at 3:27 a.m. on Feb. 10, 2009.

No trace of the blond-haired 5-year-old has been found, despite massive searches by law enforcement officers and volunteers on land and water.

Haleigh's disappearance initially was described by authorities as a child-abduction case. At the conclusion of the three-day April search, Hardy officially labeled it a homicide.

Then 17-year-old Misty Croslin was dating Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, and was babysitting Haleigh the night she went missing.
Croslin, now 18, told deputies she put Haleigh to bed just after 8 p.m. and went to bed herself a couple hours later. Croslin said she awoke around 3 a.m. to use the restroom when she noticed the kitchen light on, the door propped open with a cinder block and Haleigh gone.

Haleigh's father, 26-year-old Ronald Cummings, was returning from his night-shift job at PDM Bridge in Palatka when the child was reported missing.

Diving squads, ground searchers, bloodhounds and helicopters scoured areas of the river and Satsuma woods while door-to-door interviews were conducted and officers searched vehicles at roadblocks.

Two camps with tents were set up in the neighborhood to house the maternal and paternal sides of Haleigh's family. For more than a month, tents remained aglow with hundreds of candles used in nightly vigils while national news media spotlighted the child's disappearance.

A month later, Croslin and Cummings married at his grandmother's house in Welaka.

Detectives named Croslin the key to the investigation after her statements to investigators had numerous inconsistencies about what took place between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. the night Haleigh disappeared.

After seven months, Cummings divorced Croslin, citing public scrutiny.

In January, Cummings, Croslin, Hank Croslin Jr., Cummings' cousin Hope Sykes and a former search volunteer Donna Brock of Orlando were arrested following a month-long narcotics investigation into the trafficking of prescription pills.

They remain in jail today.

PLEASE - DO NOT POST EVERY ARREST IN FLORIDA OR PUTNAM COUNTY.  We know there is alot of drug activity in the area but it's not all connected to this case.

Unless you can state a relationship to the Cummings or Croslin group or some reason to think they are associated with the Haleigh Cummings case, PLEASE DON'T POST EVERY DRUG ARREST or other ARREST just because it happened.  It must have a connection to the case.

Thanks!

Such a beautiful child.  I just cannot help praying and holding out hope that MAYBE this precious little girl will be found safe.  LONG shot I know, but I just can't help it.  Besides, I do not believe anything any of those pill poppers say.

If it continues we'll start deleting the posts.
