MONUMENT - Police are investigating a possible homicide after a toddler's body was found in a basement on Friday.

Monument Police say the body was found in a home that was being remodeled. Contractors called police.

The home is near Highway 105 and Beacon Lite Road.

The home has been for sale for 52 days and has been on and off the market since 2008.

Investigators say they are treating it as a suspicious death at this point. If it is ruled a homicide, it would be the first ever for Monument.

An autopsy has revealed more about a body that was found in the basement of a vacant duplex in Monument on Friday.

The El Paso County coroner said on Monday the child is between the ages of 7 and 10, and that the child is female. The cause of death is unknown, as well as the child's identity. Initially police said the body was that of a toddler.

Monument police say that if the case is a homicide it would be the first in the town's history.

Two construction workers made the shocking discovery late Friday afternoon when they went in the duplex, located on Century Place, to do some work on the plumbing in the basement.

Neighbors say no one has lived in the propery since Christmas, and that some long-time residents say they don't ever recall seeing a child living there. The last residents to live there were in their late teens or early 20s, neighbors say.

The autopsy began on Saturday with minimal information about the body.

"Any time it involves the death of a child, naturally or through a crime scene -- a homicide -- it's very disturbing," said Police Chief Jacob Shirk. "(Many of us) are parents and it greatly saddens us to have to be involved in something like this."

Police are hoping someone will come forward with some information to help them in their investigation. They also say no missing children have been reported in Monument. They are working with the El Paso County Sheriff's Department in the case.

Monument is located about 45 miles south of Denver.

MONUMENT, Colo. -- An autopsy on the remains of a child's body found in the basement of an empty home in Monument revealed it was that of a 7- to 10-year-old girl of unknown race.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office said the remains were in such a condition that the girl's cause of death could not be determined.

The home, at 764 Century Place, was last lived in three to five months ago, according to people in the neighborhood. The home was undergoing renovation when workers made the discovery on Friday.

Neighbors told 7NEWS over the weekend that they remember a family living in the house about three years ago. They said a 6-year-old girl disappeared and the family told them the girl had moved back to New Jersey to live with her aunt.

Monument police scheduled an afternoon news conference to discuss the case.

As rumors circulated in the Monument neighborhood where a young girl’s body was found in the crawl space of a vacant home, investigators Tuesday continued their silence on whether they suspect former tenants and where those tenants might be.

Lt. Lari Sevene, spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, which is assisting Monument police in the investigation, declined to comment on speculation concerning the identity of a 7- to 10-year-old girl found in the house at 764 Century Place, Unit A.

Construction workers renovating the house discovered the body about 4 p.m. Friday and promptly called police. Monument Police Chief Jake Shirk said the death is being treated as a homicide, although no cause of death was released after an autopsy by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.

Angela Robbins, who lives across the street from the house, said she saw a “real tiny” girl living in the house riding her bike “every now and then.”

The family, which had two children,  lived in the house for about three months in early 2009, Robbins said. They moved away shortly after a teacher at Palmer Lake Elementary School told Robbins that the girl suddenly stopped coming to school.

“They didn’t play with any of the other kids in the neighborhood at all, really,” Robbins said.

“It’s second- and third-hand information that’s circulating amongst … the same neighbors,” said Sevene, adding the identity of the girl has yet to be determined by the Coroner’s Office. “It would not be prudent to do that. And if there is any possibility that there is any validity, (the Sheriff’s Office) certainly wouldn’t speak to anything pertaining to an active investigation.”

Efforts to identify the girl are continuing this week, with a specialist being brought in to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office to examine dental records, according to Deputy Coroner Sandy Way.

If the dental records don’t identify the girl, Way said a forensic anthropologist will examine the girl’s skeletal remains.

MONUMENT, Colo. -- The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office issued a “be on the look out” alert for a couple TARGET 13 first reported on Tuesday. Monique Lynch, seen in the photo, and her boyfriend Hanif Sims are wanted for questioning into the death of a girl whose body was found in a Monument home last Friday detectives said.

Sources told TARGET 13 the couple was last seen in New Jersey, and police there have been asking relatives questions in the case.

Both Sims and Lynch came to Colorado in August of 2008 and rented the home where the body was discovered in September.

Neighbors said the couple arrived with a 7-year-old girl, Genesis, and 12-year-old boy, Davon.

Neither has been named as suspects in the case, but police are interested in speaking with them about their time in the home.

“They’re persons of interest,” said Lt. Lari Sevene, with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. "We would like to interview them pertaining to their occupancy at that same residence,” said Sevene.

According to information over the police scanner both Sims and Lynch have active warrants out of New Jersey. A criminal background check in Colorado shows now warrants issued for either Lynch or Sims.

Neighbors believe the body is that of the little girl, Genesis, but investigators are still waiting for more information from the coroner before jumping to any conclusions.

Neighbors told NEWSCHANNEL 13 that the girl just disappeared one day. “When we asked where did she go? They said, ‘We shipped her off to New Jersey; she was our problem child,’” said Kristen McCollam, a nearby neighbor.

A source told TARGET 13 the body was buried under dirt in the crawlspace. A plumber discovered the body

A local landlord who almost rented a home to the couple said the family just showed up at a home of friends they met on the Internet. “What they did was basically leave in the middle of the night; left food on the stove, left their clothes and tooth brushes, everything that was personal to them, including televisions and computer,” said the landlord, who doesn’t want to be named.

Investigators do not consider Monique Lynch and Hanif Sims suspects, sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Lari Sevene.   ?? But investigators want to speak with the couple, as they have with other former residents of the now-vacant duplex where workers found the body while renovating the home at 764 Century Place.

"We reached out to them so we can get some questions answered," Sevene said.

The law enforcement bulletin says the couple, who had young children including a daughter, is sought for questioning in the "suspicious death investigation." The couple is also wanted on outstanding New Jersey warrants: Lynch for violating probation on a dangerous drugs conviction and Sims for a weapons violations, Sevene said.

KRDO, citing unnamed sources, said the couple was last seen in New Jersey, and police there have been asking relatives questions in the case.

Sevene said her agency has spoken with New Jersey law enforcement to confirm the couple's warrant. She said she knew nothing about the couple being sighted in New Jersey.

Hanif Sims' half-brother, Hassan Sims of New Jersey, told TheDenverChannel.com the couple has moved to Long Beach, Calif. He added that he has not spoken with Hanif in three months and does not know how to reach him.

Originally from New Jersey, Sims and Lynch moved to Colorado in August 2008 and the next month rented the home where the body was discovered.

Neighbors told KRDO the couple had a 7-year-old girl, Genesis, and a 12-year-old boy, Davon. Hassan Sims said the couple also has an infant son.

An autopsy on the remains found in the basement crawl space revealed it was that of a 7- to 10-year-old girl of unknown race. The El Paso County Coroner's Office said the remains were so badly decomposed that the girl's cause of death and identity could not be determined.

Coroner's officials may seek the help of an anthropologist to pinpoint the dead girl's age and race. The coroner is also awaiting the results of further tests, including toxicology, that will take weeks to complete, she added.

Neighbors told TheDenverChannel the couple's daughter, Genesis, disappeared one day and the couple told them she had moved back to New Jersey to live with her aunt.

Hassan Sims said that Genesis did not come to live with relatives on his side of the family. But he could not rule out that she was living with relatives of Hanif's father.

A Monument neighbor said others had called police before about possible abuse at the home.

Monument police Chief Jacob Shirk said he can't say yet whether police visited the home in the past, but a source confirmed to 7NEWS that Human Service department officials had contacted a family at the home before.

MONUMENT, Colo. -- Family members of Hanif Sims and Monique Lynch said they are in disbelief about the investigation into the suspicious death of a young child. Several family members told TARGET 13 that detectives in the case already have contacted them.


Lynch and Sims are part of a nationwide search as detectives look for answers into about how the body of a young girl ended up buried in a crawlspace of a home off Century Place in Monument.


As TARGET 13 first reported Thursday night, the sheriff’s office issued an alert for all police departments “to be on the lookout” for both Sims and Lynch. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said Sims or Lynch are not suspects, but investigators do want to speak with the couple.

Hassan Sims, Hanif Sims' half-brother who lives New Jersey, declined to comment about the investigation. He told TARGET 13 that investigators have spoken with him, but wouldn’t go into any more detail.

Hassan Sims said his last contact with Hanif was three months ago, and he thought the couple lived in Long Beach.

TARGET 13 found the family was in California City, Calif. according to Lynch’s Facebook page. TARGET 13 was able to confirm though family members that it was her social networking page.

The Facebook page has pictures of her newborn son, whom she calls “Fatty Boo.” The young child recently had a birthday according to a post on the web page. There are also pictures of Davon, the 12-year-old boy neighbors claim lived with the family while they were in the Monument home.

Police spokespersons in both Long Beach and California City said their departments are not aware of the investigation and have not been contacted by El Paso County Sheriff’s Office for assistance.

Neighbors in Colorado told NEWSCHANNEL 13 the family moved into the Monument home in September 2008 and moved out in early 2009. A woman who almost rented a home to the family showed TARGET 13 the rental applications Sims filled out.

Sims included the names of two children, 7-year-old Genesis and 12-year-old Davon on the rental application. Neighbors said, one day, the girl just disappeared and the family told them that she was a “problem child” and had been shipped back to New Jersey.

According to one family member who doesn’t want to be identified, 7-year-old Genesis is the biological daughter of Hanif; Lynch was not her biological mother.


The family member did provide a picture of Genesis, but it's unknown when the picture was taken.

The body found in the home was badly decomposed and detectives couldn’t positively identify the child. The coroner is trying to use dental records and possibly DNA to determine if the body is that of Genesis. Investigators have not determined if the death is a homicide. Sources told TARGET 13 on Monday that the body was buried under dirt and was in a plastic bag.

Mom Says Body Found In Monument Likely Belongs To Her Daughter
The mother of a little girl is sure it's her daughter's body that was found at a Monument home about two weeks ago. DNA results are still pending.

Right now, investigators are searching for the girl's biological father, Hanif Sims and his girlfriend, Monique Lynch. They once lived in the Monument home where workmen recently discovered the body.

Jopetia Garretson says El Paso County detectives visited her New Jersey home to take DNA last week. She says, ever since, she's been thinking about her daughter, who she hasn't seen since October of 2007. That was the same time she lost custody.

“She was sweet and she cared for people before herself. She would play with friends to make them happy and worry about herself after," says Garretson.

The search for the couple has taken investigators to California, where the two are believed to be living. We're told they've abandoned their apartment, dropped off their two boys at a relative’s house and are on the run.
