HP expands notebook battery recall
  Friday, May 21, 2010

Hewlett-Packard has now extended a worldwide recall of laptop batteries for the second time, saying that the batteries may cause computers to overheat and pose a significant fire hazard.

HP says any affected batteries will be replaced for free.

"We are taking this action as part of our commitment to provide the highest quality of service to our notebook customers," said an HP spokesperson.

The lithium-ion batteries were used in more than 30 laptop models worldwide sold under various HP brands including Compaq Presario, Pavillion, HP and HP Compaq between August 2007 and May 2008.

HP has said they believe that less than 3 percent of laptops made during that period actually contain the affected batteries.

The battery recall program was first announced more than a year ago, and expanded to include more computer models last October.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision says that since the original recall last May, the company has received 38 reports of batteries which have overheated and ruptured. Those incidents resulted in 11 minor injuries and 31 instances of minor property damage.

HP recalling 54,000 laptop batteries
May 21, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO  — Hewlett-Packard Co. is recalling 54,000 lithium-ion batteries used in HP and Compaq computers after receiving reports of injuries from the batteries overheating and rupturing.

The recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and expands an earlier recall of 70,000 of the same type of batteries.

The earlier recall came after two reports of the batteries overheating. The commission said that since then, HP has received 38 additional reports of the batteries overheating, causing 11 minor injuries.

HP says the computers at issue were sold in stores and online from August 2007 through July 2008. The battery packs were also sold separately.
