Sarah Ferguson will go on US tycoon Donald Trump’s Apprentice and Oprah Winfrey’s chatshow in a bid to rescue her tattered reputation.

Fergie, 50, hopes starring on America’s version of the gruelling job quest will highlight her business acumen despite the £500,000 cash-for-royal-access scandal.

Billionaire Mr Trump is said to admire the cash-strapped duchess and hiring her would also net her a tidy sum.

A TV insider said: “He wants to help Sarah out of this awful mess she has gotten herself into and is discussing finding her a role.

“It’s not yet clear whether she would compete or be Donald’s eyes and ears on the next season of the Apprentice.”

The duchess – in the States to plug her range of kids’ books – is expected to express sorrow over the Prince Andrew storm when she is quizzed today by TV queen Oprah.

A friend said: “She’s desperate to get her career back on track in the US, where she has bounced back in the past, and sees this as a chance to put her side of the story.

“She knows she made a terrible mistake but also knows she has to move on and try to recover.” Another TV source added: “It’s no surprise she’s doing it as she needs to get her businesses back on track.

“They will be discussing her books but it’s also an opportunity for her to reiterate her deep regret for what happened.”

At a New York book launch, the mum of two admitted: “We all make mistakes, yet we go on. We dust ourselves down.”

Asked how she was feeling, she replied: “Very good,” and then smiled: “Perhaps very is not the right word.”

She found herself mired in scandal at the weekend after a newspaper secretly filmed her demanding £500,000 from a bogus businessman for access to Prince Andrew, a UK trade envoy. She also grabbed a £40,000 down-payment but later admitted a “serious lapse in judgment”.

However, some old friends have accused her of revelling in the notoriety. One said: “I think she secretly loves the attention. You see her leaving her hotel with a big smile. She hasn’t had this much publicity since she was married to Prince Andrew.”

Others urged her to curb her spending. One acquaintance added: “She always flies first-class. She has a full-time driver,a hair stylist and make-up artist. The money she spends is crazy. She lives like Elton John.”

Fergie, who won’t be paid to appear on Oprah, flies home from the US tonight.
