Peru promises a fair trial for Dutch murder suspect

LIMA (AFP) - – The Dutchman suspected in the murder of a Peruvian woman and the disappearance of a US teenager in Aruba five years ago is guaranteed a fair trial in Peru, the country's interior minister said Saturday.

The suspect, Joran Van Der Sloot, 22, appeared handcuffed and wearing a bullet-proof vest at the criminal police headquarters in downtown Lima.

Van der Sloot was detained in Chile on Thursday, and police handed him over to the Peruvians at the border town of Tacna on Friday.

Interior Minister Octavio Salazar thanked the Chileans for promptly arresting the suspect.

"We would like to thank the Chilean government for handing him over to Peruvian justice, where he has all the guarantees" of a fair trial, Salazar said.

"We have to give police time to complete their investigation, let's remain calm," Salazar told reporters anxious for any bit of information on the case.

The Dutchman is the prime suspect in the May 30 murder of Stephany Flores Ramirez, the 21-year-old daughter of a Peruvian former race car driver.

Her body was found Tuesday, two days after she was killed, in a hotel room in an upmarket area of Peru's capital.

Initially said to have been stabbed, a forensic report later showed she had suffered severe blows to the head and a broken neck.

Peruvian police say Van der Sloot was seen entering the hotel with the victim, according to witnesses. Video footage showed the two had spent time together at a casino beforehand.

Van der Sloot left Lima the day after the murder for Chile in a 1,300-kilometer (800-mile), 620-dollar taxi ride to the border, investigators said.

The maximum sentence for murder in Peru is 25 years prison.

Van der Sloot was at the center of another criminal inquiry in 2005, when he was named as a key suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old US student visiting the Dutch-run Caribbean island of Aruba.

In that case, Van der Sloot was twice arrested, but charges were never brought against him because of lack of evidence. Holloway's body was never found.

Van der Sloot was later videotaped saying Holloway died after suffering a seizure and that an acquaintance helped him dump the body into the sea.

Van der Sloot however later denied that, and said he had made the comments under the influence of marijuana.

Fernando Ovalle, the Chilean police official in charge of the suspect's detention and deportation, said Van der Sloot gave a statement Friday in fluent Spanish "denying all participation in the charges leveled against him" in the Peru murder.

"He only acknowledged that he knew her (Flores)" and stated that "at some point they had gone to a casino," Ovalle said.

The slain woman's father, Peruvian businessman Ricardo Flores Chipoco, earlier told reporters his daughter was killed at dawn last Sunday after meeting Van der Sloot in a casino.

Media reports highlighted two similarities in the cases in Peru and in Aruba: in both cases, the women were seen with Van der Sloot in a casino, and both met their fates on the date of May 30.

Joran is facing at least a couple years in a Peruvian prison before his case even goes to trial.  Anita is his only hope of obtaining legal representation and basic living necessities for the next couple years.  She needs to bring him money.  Without money, he's facing a living hell and may not survive it.

Where is the legal representation the DUTCH said they would pay for, for him??

Nut,  I read they said they would NOT be paying for a lawyer for him.  They would offer assistance if he need help on something like health issues only.  (that is what the consulate said)
Right.  They will give him 30 (euros?) a month and enable contact with relatives.  That's about it.  They won't find him a lawyer or pay for one.  I did read somewhere that there are 65 public defenders and over 10,000 prisoners awaiting trial.  Thus, most do not get legal representation.  Private lawyers are expensive and Joran would need someone outside the prison to arrange payment in advance to a lawyer. Mom is his only resource--she needs to take him money or he is toast.

I did find this interesting document that is for British nationals detained in Peru.  It has interesting details about the legal system.  http://ukinperu.fco.gov.uk/resources/es/pdf/pdf1/british-detained-in-peru

I read the UK document. Frightening. Good find!

Very interesting.  It really details the process over the next year.

I'm going to leave you all with this;

I only had a few (maybe two) emails with Beth. They were kinda long. In one prose we talked about "moms". And I can tell you that Beth and I and many of you all come from the same values. It's why we can call her Mom, Daughter, Sister, Friend.

In my opinion, and I would never attempt to speak for her, I think her heart is relieved that no one will ever suffer at the hands of Joran van der Sloot again. The pain that he has caused is so immense that it can not be quantified.

5 years of wondering when that next call would come has finally ended.

1825 days of wondering who he would kill next has come to an end. We all know that answer and our prayers are with Stephany's family. One portion of Beth's journey has ended, and a new chapter will begin.

Prayers for Beth tonite. May Beth have the peace she seeks.

I was sitting her thinking of what the conversation would be between Anita and Joran when she goes and visits him.  I think it will go something like this.

Joran:  Anita good to see you.

Anita:  Joran what have you done now.

Joran:  I've done nothing I'm innocent.

Anita:  Whew Joran for a minute there I was beginning to believe all the lies they were telling about my little sporter.

Joran:  I never lie.

Anita:  I knew that (rolling eyes)

Joran:  OK Anita here is what we do. Go to the powers that be in Aruba and tell them if they don't help me I will spill the beans on them.

Anita:  What beans.

Joran:  Just do what I say.

Anita:  OK Joran.

NOW FAST FORWARD TO ARUBA:

Anita:  Rude Croes if you don't help Joran he is going to spill the beans.

RudyC: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Anita:  Why are you laughing so hard.

Rudy:  He is a liar no one would believe him.
