Is there a press conference in Peru going on right now? It was expected at 4 am Peru time. (2 am on our west coast, 5 am on our east coast.) What was said?

Not ignoring you Port Valerie! I'm looking! Nothing's been posted about it yet!

Thanks. It just seems like an odd time to have a press conference, so I wonder if some information came across wrong.

MSNBC is quoting the Republica newspaper in this one but I haven't seen anything in my searches yet regarding any official press conference.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37542848/ns/world_news-americas/

LIMA, Peru - Joran van der Sloot confessed to the slaying of a 21-year-old woman in a Lima hotel room, a high-ranking Peruvian government official told NBC News on Monday.

According to La Republica newspaper, van der Sloot said he broke Stephany Flores' neck after she grabbed his laptop without his permission and found out that he was involved in the disappearance of an American woman.

The paper quoted van der Sloot as saying, "I did not want to do it. The girl intruded into my private life... she didn't have any right.........

Maybe Joran was still figuring on cashing in on the extortion.  Could have there been some information as to where Natalee's body is?  Then if Stephany knew where it was, she could report it which would one not get him the extortion money, and two, maybe she could cash in on some reward; making Joran not getting any money?

I am also wondering if all the brusishing and bloody trauma was done in rage, after she was unconscious or even dead.

If Joran flies into these rages, I doubt Natalee and Stephany were his only two victims.

Joran may have confessed due to a lighter sentence as well as the Peruvians may have not been as nice to him, as his Aruban counterparts during questioning.

I wonder if the confession to an act of rage was made because if it was shown to be murder after robbery, the latter holds the death penalty or life sentence???

Also, does anyone have the larger version of this photo:

I haven't read everything but this is why I think he confessed.

“However, he still has to prove that Flores actually used his computer during that time,” pointed out Amoretti to El Comercio.

http://www.livinginperu.com/news/12396

They should be able to do that via the timeline that he was out, if not by prints on the laptop (I know you know this and was just pointing out the reference)
I think this theory makes perfect sense to me.  He left to go get them both coffee...she's in nthe room alone...he returns to find her on his laptop...he goes nuts...kills her in a fit of rage...showers and changes clothes...leaves the oom alone to flee to Chile.  Open and shut to me.  She most likely found files on his desktop regarding the extortion plot and whatnot.  But more then  that, he's a control freks.  Once out of it, he loses all sense to sanity and becomes violent.  Same thing most likely happened to natalee...

It does seems to make sense; however, I just can't believe the two of them spent all that time in Joran's room...hours...just don't believe that happened.

I can't believe that Stephany just went to Joran's room to hang out for hours...there was a reason...collect money he owed her...maybe he used the ruse of telling her he would sell her his computer...a "reason".  Not just to hang out over-night.

Why the roofies?

IMHO, Joran drugged and took pics of the girls to sell.  He may have asked Stephany to come to his room to get high........with drugging and taking pics in mind.  Did she see pics on the laptop?  Think back on Lorenzo, etc.  Joran didn't make his money all on poker.  He had money to travel before the extortion.  It's not over until Dave and Beth have Natalee back.  My prayers are with them having to relive this cocky little punk's nightmare.

Van Der Sloot Confesses To Killing Woman
Stephany Flores' Battered Body Found In Hotel

POSTED: 12:41 am EDT June 8, 2010
UPDATED: 6:16 am EDT June 8, 2010
LIMA, Peru --
Dutchman Joran Van der Sloot, long the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of a U.S. teen in Aruba, has confessed to killing a young Peruvian woman in his Lima hotel room last week, a police spokesman said.

Peru's chief police spokesman, Col. Abel Gamarra, told The Associated Press that Van der Sloot admitted under police questioning Monday that he killed 21-year-old Stephany Flores on May 30.

The broadcaster America Television reported that Van der Sloot killed Flores in a rage after learning she had looked up information about his past on his laptop. It said it had access to details of the confession but did not cite its source.

Gamarra would not provide details of the confession. Nor would the chief of Peru's criminal police, Gen. Cesar Guardia, when the AP reached him by telephone. Guardia said only police director Gen. Miguel Hidalgo could authorize the information to be divulged. Hidalgo's cell phone rang unanswered.
Asked about the Van der Sloot confession, a brother of the victim, Enrique Flores, told the AP "we are not going to make any comment. This is in the hands of the police, of the justice system."

Van der Sloot's confession came on his third full day in Peruvian police custody, on the eve of a planned trip to the hotel in which he was to participate in a reconstruction of the events leading to Flores' slaying, Gamarra said.

Flores, a business student, was found beaten to death, her neck broken, in the 22-year-old Dutchman's hotel room. Police said the two met playing poker at a casino.

Police released video on Saturday from hotel security cameras that shows the two entering Van der Sloot's hotel room together at 5 a.m. Saturday and Van der Sloot leaving alone four hours later with his bags. Police say Van der Sloot left the hotel briefly at 8:10 a.m., returning to the room with two cups of coffee and bread purchased across the street at a supermarket.

Gamarra said the case would now be turned over to prosecutors to present formal charges and Van der Sloot will be assigned to a prison while he awaits trial. Murder convictions carry a maximum of 35 years in prison in Peru and it was not immediately clear if a confession could lead to a reduced sentence.
Van der Sloot remains the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway, then 18, on the Caribbean resort island of Aruba while she was celebrating her high school graduation.

He was arrested twice in the case -- and gave a number of conflicting confessions, some in TV interviews -- but was freed for lack of evidence.

A fixture on true crime shows and in tabloids after Holloway's disappearance, he gained a reputation for lying -- even admitting a penchant for it -- and also exhibited a volatile temper. In one Dutch television interview he threw a glass of wine in a reporter's eyes. In another, he smashed a glass of water against a wall in a fury.

The 6-foot-3 (191-centimeter) -tall Van der Sloot had been held at Peruvian criminal police headquarters since arriving Saturday in a police convoy from Chile, where he was captured on Thursday.

He had crossed into Chile on Monday, nearly a day after leaving the Lima hotel -- five years to the day after Holloway's disappearance.

Flores' battered body was found on the floor in the room more than two days later. Lima's deputy medical investigator, Victor Tejada, told the AP on Monday that she was killed by blows with a blunt object, probably the tennis racket found in the hotel room.

Guardia told the AP her body was found face down and clothed with no indication of sexual assault.
In video taken of the Dutchman that was broadcast Sunday by a TV channel, Peruvian police were seen searching Van der Sloot's belongings in his presence. They were shown pulling out of his backpack a laptop, a business-card holder and 15 bills in foreign currency.

Chilean police who questioned Van der Sloot on Thursday said he declared himself innocent of the Lima slaying but acknowledged knowing Flores.

Van der Sloot was represented by a state-appointed lawyer during Saturday's questioning and both a Dutch Embassy official and his U.S.-based attorney told the AP on Sunday that he was seeking to hire his own counsel.

The suspect's father, a former judge and attorney on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba, died in February. Van der Sloot has two brothers.

There were indications Van der Sloot may have been traveling on money gained through extortion.

The day of his arrest in Chile, Van der Sloot was charged in the United States with trying to extort $250,000 from Holloway's family in exchange for disclosing the location of her body and describing how she died.
U.S. prosecutors say $15,000 was transferred to a Dutch bank account in his name on May 10. He arrived in Peru four days later, his visit coinciding with the runup to a June 2-5 Latin America Poker Tour tournament with a $930,000 prize pool.

Tournament organizers said Van der Sloot did not sign up to participate in the event.

Van der Sloot is an avid gambler and was known in Aruba to frequent its casino hotels, one of which was lodging Natalee Holloway.

In a lengthy 2006 interview with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News, Van der Sloot described drinking shots of rum with Holloway, whom he said he met while playing poker at an Aruba casino, then taking her to a beach and leaving her there around 3:30 a.m.

Two years later, a Dutch television crime reporter captured hidden-camera footage of Van der Sloot saying that after Holloway, drunk, collapsed on the beach while the two were kissing he asked a friend to dump her body in the sea.

"I would never murder a girl," he said.
That interview prompted authorities in Aruba to reopen the case, but Van der Sloot later said he made up the whole story and he was not charged.

The crime reporter, Peter de Vries -- the victim of the wine-throwing incident -- reported later in 2008 that Van der Sloot was recruiting Thai women in Bangkok for sex work in the Netherlands.

I remember a confession June 10, 2005 (approx)

That's what I was thinking.  He will take it all back tomorrow.

Magnolia - He doesn't have anyone to cover up for him in Peru.  It's over for Joran.  Now, if he was ever a man he needs to fess up about Natalee.

In my opinion he won't.  He blames Beth for destroying his life and he will do everything in his power to make sure she never has closure.  With Joran it's everyone else fault this happened not his.

It was on or about June 11, 2005 that they told Beth Natalee was dead and Beth collapsed in that photo.  I hope and pray they give Joran news that he is arrested and confined in that hell hole on or about June 11, 2010 - that would be such sweet karma.  I still wonder if the laptop had a camera.  If Stephany woke up stripped and in different clothes....... the laptop may have been opened and aimed.  Your life is crumbling Joran.

Well the fact remains he has confessed to killing her. I don't think Peru is going to let him go like Aruba did just because he is lying about the details. I hope if they find her fingerprints on his laptop they just wipe them clean. Would serve him right. Even so wouldn't the fact that he beat her so brutally, took her vehicle and fled the country be aggravating factors? I think he is toast. Were any of her wounds from restraints of some kind?

I'm re-posting a segment from the British pamphlet for UK citizens arrested in Peru. I have highlighted the steps in the process. The main point is this: there does not seem to be much of a trial here, not as we understand it anyway. I don't see anything about proofs and witnesses and rules of evidence and so forth. The determination of guilt comes very quickly after the arrest. It's the exact sentence that takes a long time to determine.

Here is the UK information (blue highlights are mine, intended to itemize the steps in the process) :

I HAVE BEEN ARRESTED, WHAT COMES NEXT?

All that comes after the arrest is regulated by the Peruvian laws and authorities only, as
you have been arrested in Peru. The Peruvian Police has between 15 and 18 days to
complete the investigations of your case. During the investigations you will stay at the
Police station.
The Police officers should provide you with a detention notification, which
we have translated into English for your understanding. You can find it in Annex A.

If you are held at DIRANDRO (Dirección Nacional Antidrogas: The Peruvian Organisation
that fights drug trafficking in Peru, part of the Peruvian National Police. It is located
in San Isidro.) you will remain in a cell. There are 12 shared cells and 2
individual cells there. Your jewellery, money and personal documents, including passport,
will be taken into safekeeping. You might recover your clothes and personal items once
the investigations have finished. If you are receiving medication, this should be taken to
the prison as well. The Embassy will not be able to keep your belongings at the Embassy,
except for your passport.

At DIRANDRO the police will take your statement, but probably without an interpreter. You
will not see a public lawyer until you are in prison. It is unlikely that we would be given a
private room to discuss things when we visit you. Most of the Police Officers do not speak
English. You will have a basic medical check everyday and receive food and water. We
will provide you with some toiletries.

At DIRANDRO you will very likely to be incarcerated with foreign nationals arrested with
drugs at the international airport of Lima. Peru is one of the biggest cocaine producers in
South America and drug smuggling is a serious crime. The airport in Lima is the most
important international airport in Peru and has effective drug smuggling controls.

After investigations at the remand centre, you will be taken to the Attorney General
Office at the Public Ministry
(Fiscalía de la Nación at the Ministerio Público: The location
is in the centre of Lima.)

At the AG Office you will appear before a judge who will decide whether to press charges
against you or not. You will probably stay there for a day or two.

If you arrive on a Friday you may remain there for the weekend. At the AG Office you will
be held in a cell with other detainees. Women and men will be separated. The cells do
not have beds, but a bench and a shared bathroom. There is not much light. You will be
given water at your request, but food is generally not provided.

As soon as we know that you have arrived at the GA Office we will try to arrange a visit by
an officer from the Ombudsman Office in Lima. We would provide this Officer with some
limited funds, which would be refunded to us from your first deposit of funds from family or
friends. With those limited funds the officer should buy you some food.

At the GA Office you will be interviewed. Your statement from the Police station will be
considered. The Attorney General represents the Peruvian State and if he/she considers
you guilty, he/she will file a complaint to the judge about your offence. If the judge finds
you guilty, you will be transferred to the Justice Palace.
The Justice Palace is in the
Centre of Lima and the cells are ruled by INPE (Instituto Nacional Penitenciario. INPE
is the Peruvian Penitentiary Institute and is part of the Ministry of Justice.)

At the Justice Palace you will remain in a cell (women and men separated). If you are a man
charged for a sexual offence, you will be held in a separate cell for your own safety.
If you arrive at the Justice Palace in the morning you should stay there until the afternoon.
If you arrive at the afternoon you should remain there until next day (or during the weekend
if you arrive on a Friday).

The INPE officers will interview you and decide to which prison you will be taken. They will take
into consideration the type of crime, your background and the prison system. You will then be
transferred to a prison.

If the Attorney General does not press charges against you, you will not have to go to
the Justice Palace and the prison. This, however, does not often happen with British
nationals involved in drug smuggling.

Most of the male British nationals imprisoned for drug smuggling have been held at the
Prison of Callao, also known as “Sarita Colonia”. Callao is a province very close to Lima
and accommodates most of the British male prisoners in Peru. Most of the female British
nationals imprisoned for drug smuggling have been held at the Prison of Chorrillos,
also known as “Santa Mónica”. Chorrillos is a district very close to the Embassy
and accommodates all the British female prisoners in Peru.

The prison choice as well as any future transfer to another prison is decided and
arranged by INPE.

Once you arrive at the prison it is very likely that you will have to buy your own bed and
other personal items. Please call us. As soon as we know you have arrived in prison
we will visit you and take the following with us: a pack of toiletries, newspapers and/or
magazines and an advance of funds (approx. S/100 soles) if you need them and they
are available.

The currency in Peru is the Sol. S/.1 is roughly Ł 6.25 sterling pounds.

Other British or foreign nationals imprisoned will have been through a very similar
experience and will be a source of information on the regime in prison and should be
able to help you adapt to your surroundings.

The Peruvian judicial system is slow. It generally takes one or two years for your
sentence to be decided. You will remain in prison meanwhile. Please communicate
with your lawyer if you want to speed up the process.

Have a good day, San! I agree with you! Joran blames Beth for destroying his life. I hope there's some satisfaction in that for Beth.

Joran destroyed his own miserable existance and his parents enabled him to do it his whole life, I think. I just wish he hadn't taken Natalee's and Stephany's life in the process!

San, I completely agree with you.

When has he ever told the truth?

If it were possible to discover the pretense he used to get Stephany to his room, I think only then would it be possible to analyze and determine the reason he killed her. Unfortunately it appears only he and Stephany know what his ruse was to get her there.

And beyond the animalistic inhumane brutality of his attack, why tear her jeans off? Jeans in this day and age don't just fall off or slip off easily. Was he trying to make it appear to be a sexual attack before leaving?

So many questions and I just find it ironic that Beth is in DC to open this new center within 24 hours of his confession.........

http://www.rnw.nl/english/article/joran-van-der-sloot-peru-makes-evidence-public

The media in Peru has already decided that Dutchman Joran van der Sloot is guilty of murdering 21-year-old Stephany Flores. After he was handed over to Peruvian police officials, Joran van der Sloot was paraded before the press three times. Video footage of his first hearing can also be found on the internet. The Dutch foreign ministry is considering its reaction.

Peruvian Interior Minister Octavio Salazar has guaranteed that Joran van der Sloot will be given a fair trial. However, meanwhile all kinds of evidence against the Dutchman has been made public.

The Peruvian police say initial forensic investigations clearly indicate Joran van der Sloot's involvement int the murder. Police say the victim was beaten to death with a tennis racket. There is video footage showing the suspect and the young woman arriving at his hotelin the Peruvian capital, Lima.

Natalee Holloway
Joran van der Sloot is already a well-known figure in the United States, the Netherlands and in Aruba, for he has been the main suspect for several years in the case of the disappearance of US teenager Natalee Holloway on the island of Aruba in 2005.

It is still not known what actually happened to Ms Holloway, and Joran van der Sloot has not been formally charged in connection with her disappearance.

No protest
The Dutch embassy in Peru, contrary to earlier reports, has not protested against the release of incriminating evidence. The foreign ministry is still considering whether it will give an official reaction to how the case is being handled. A spokesperson for the ministry told Radio Netherlands Worldwide: "I have asked at the ministry how we should deal with this."

Generally, the Netherlands never interferes with legal processes in other countries, but there may well be reason to protest in this case. After all, the suspect claims he's innocent of murdering Stephany Flores.

His American lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, has come to his assistance. He asked on Peruvian television how it was possible that the body of Ms Flores could have been in Joran van der Sloot's hotel room for three days without anyone noticing.

Extradition
Peru and the Netherlands do not have a mutual treaty for the return of nationals to serve their sentences in their home nation. Although negotiations for the transfer of prisoners have been taking place, it is not clear when agreement might be reached.

Even if such a treaty is agreed after his possible conviction, Joran van der Sloot will be able to apply to be transferred back to the Netherlands on condition that the two countries have no objections and the convicted person also agrees. It is too early to say whether Peru would cooperate with a transfer.

Robbery
It looks as if robbery was the motive of the murder. Ms Flores' father says jewellery was missing. An amount of 1,000 dollars. which he had given her to buy a laptop, was not found on the victim or in the hotel room.

Joran van der Sloot is being held in a police cell in Lima. His custody has been extended for a further seven days. A cell has been reserved for him at the infamous high security Castro Castro prison, which has some 4,000 inmates.

In Lima, stories are circulating about how inmates deal with rapists and murderers of children and women within the prison walls. If Joran van der Sloot is found guilty of murder with robbery, he could facing a 25-year sentence.

What would cause green bruises ?? never heard of that before..

I can't see a tennis raquet being the "cause" of death..I wouldn't think it was heavy enough to break a neck....maybe I'm wrong

One of the first reports was that Stephany's death was from a brain hemmorhage. She was hit in head with a blunt object (possibly racket).

The official autopsy report has not been released yet, so not verified as fact.
I'll try and find my post with the info for you SS.

As far as the "green" bruises......not sure, but we in the US describe bruises as black and blue marks...
maybe they say "green"....bruises can look green, black, blue, purple, yellow...maybe they looked green?

I don't like what this says about a possible transfer to Holland.

Peru will never let him go. They have the jackpot and want to see him suffer.

Why would this girl look at his laptop while he was gone? Perhaps while he was out getting them some coffee and bread..  her family had no idea who Joran was, so why would she have been looking him up online?  Seems odd..  unless he said he was famous, and curiosity got the better of her?

In regard to "green" bruises:  a bruise is caused when trauma to an area causes blood to gather at the spot of trauma, initially, the bruise is red for a few minutes; as the blood loses oxygen, the bruise turns blue for a few days; as the blood breaks down, the bruise turns green for a few days and then yellow for a few days before the bruise goes away.

Thanks for the explanation....mine just seem to go from purple to yellow...never seen green...

so those may have been the first blows ? knocking her down of maybe dragging her across something hard...just thinking out loud

I just woke up and am many pages behind...forgive if this has been addressed and I have not seen it yet.....

All of the above (as darleen described) would be from a living person ... but once a person is dead there is no blood flow. The stages of bruising still happen after death?? This seems impossible, but maybe not.

As usual, he was probably lying.
