This is just getting stranger and stranger, really don't know what to think about this. I lean towards a family member, and then it appears that it could be a SO. What makes LE think that Kyron is in some type of container/suitcase? Was there a tip or something I wonder?

I hear ya!!

Not sure what makes LE think anything these days, it all seems so confusing.  Don't think they've said anything specific about a tip/lead on a container.  They did say it was a tip/lead which led to the island search/dive.  But I dunno whether to believe that's it exactly, cuz am thinking it was cell phone pings that actually led them there in the first place.  Maybe LE trying to keep things 'generic', not specific?

In thinking about it all, LE may be thinking 'container' because Kyron supposedly was not seen or traced by dogs actually leaving the bldg.  Well, supposedly not.. from what's been reported by LE anyway.

That makes sense about the container. This is just so sad and bizarre, hard to imagine nobody saw anything, but with the science fair and all people weren't paying attention.

Here's a link to an article about Stacy Wilmoth.  It's the actual newspaper which is a little strange.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1310&dat=19780428&id=lW4RAAAAIBAJ&sjid=8-EDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6815,7923623

Thanks for that link, canadianmonkey!  Amazing that article still exists today, 1978 is such a long time ago!

Strange. Goes to show you that it can happen unfortunately. The man was in his mid 30's according to the little girl. That would make him 65ish right now? Not too old to overcome a little boy. But I wonder if this could have been a copycat? Perhaps someone who had either been told about this crime or read it on line. hmmm interesting indeed.

Profiler puzzled by mum police on Kyron case
June 15, 2010

PORTLAND -- A criminal profiler and former FBI agent said the investigators into the Kyron Horman disappearance may have missed an opportunity to better use the media in the last 11 days.

FBI and sheriff's office investigators also may have been too optimistic in trying to control the flow of information let out to the public, Clint VanZandt said during an interview on KGW's "Live @ 7" show.
He has been following the Horman case and pointed out that as a former agent, now a criminal profiler and an analyst for NBC, "I've been on both sides."

VanZandt said he did not see the law enforcement and the family in this case working as well with the media as they could have.

"There is the potential that they've lost the opportunity," he said, "I hope they have had a good reason to do that."

Despite the grim video from Monday of searches in the water around Sauvie Island, he said everyone still wants  Kyron found alive.

"Everybody is hoping upon hope we see an Elizabeth Smart type of miracle from Salt Lake where we're gonna see the victim, that someone if they have taken him, that they're still holding on to him."

That kind of outcome, he said, was one of the reasons that in other cases, law enforcement and family have worked more closely the media. The media was there stating "here we are, use us."

"That didn't happen here," he said.

In several media briefings, question after question from reporters about the investigation was rebuffed. Release of information could taint the memories of tipsters, or allow fabrications to enter recollections was the argument put forth by investigators.
VanZandt invoked a scene from the 60s spy show "Get Smart" saying that investigators cannot try a "Maxwell Smart cone of silence" strategy to control the flow of information.

"That's not reality," he said, "The world is not like that."

This is so sad, its too close to home for me, his mom lives in the same town i do, and i think that the media is with holding way too much info, if they know who it is bring em in, or give clues, or give hints maybe ppl will have seen something in reference to what happened if they know the person, or more details. and i think it is very strange that the family (who raises him) didnt make a public statement/plea.... there has to be a reason, did they already know it would not help? what gives.....

I feel strongly the rescue/recovery effort of this jurisdiction was nothing short of herculean.

That said, I agree with Dr. Van Zandt about the misuse of the media in this case.

I even saw a letter taped to the door of the abandoned church used as the media center calling out an article specifically. That is just not done.

There are many cases we all follow right now that have the same problem, I do think that media strategy will rapidly become part of PD training over the "protect the prosecution" theory.

If that theory elongates the cycle for recovery, thus damaging evidence, it is useless.

They need to think like marketing gurus.... How do we generate leads to help us needs to be their mantra.

I don't really have anything to ad other than I am absolutely sick about the whole thing.  I think about Kyron every time i drop off my son at school.  It's a small school, 50 kids and they come and go.  You need a code to get in the door but what if one day, some doesn’t shut it all the way?  What if the teachers get distracted?  It’s an open door policy, what if someone else’s parent, who then isn’t a stranger, gets him to go with him?  All of this is going through my head and I feel so bad for this poor little guy.  It’s enough that I call the school every day at 1PM tp make sure my son’s ok.

My thoughts, prayers and heart go out to Kyron’s family, who don’t have him to hold again tonight.

Our school district just built a new elementary school. The kids must all go in the same door each morning. If the teachers do not know the parent they ask for I.D., anytime after school starts you must go to a specific door where the secretary sits and be buzzed in. There are gates on both sides of her desk that she has to allow you to pass. We are a pretty small elementary school and a lot of parents complained about all of the security. Hopefully they will read about Kyron and think twice about it. The old school had an open door policy and scared me half to death.

Kyron Horman update: Photos shows Kyron without glasses, released to the public (videos, photos)
June 15, 2010

New photo shows Kyron Horman without his glasses. Kyron vanished from his school on June 4,2010.

As the search for Kyron Horman continues, investigators continue to release photos in an effort to help find the missing Portland, Oregon boy. The photo shows Kyron Horman standing by his science fair exhibit on tree frogs without his glasses. Earlier, authorities released photos of the clothes and glasses similar to the type Kyron wore the day he went missing. The hope is that the new photo will help someone identify Kyron should they see him.

Though the search and rescue portion of the investigation has ended and investigators are focusing on the criminal case, this does not mean that the search has ended entirely. Authorities continue to search for Kyron, however, it is on a local basis. More than 1,300 searchers scoured areas looking for clues and hoping to find Kyron. Their searches came up empty.

You may see the photo of Kyron without his glasses as well as the photos released previously, including Kyron’s clothes and glasses, in the slideshow below.

Brandon Roy comforts students at Skyline School with Kyron Horman still missing
June 15, 2010

Brandon Roy, an All-Star guard for the Portland Trail Blazers, shares hugs at Skyline School today during an assembly. He was one of a few people giving motivational talks.

Classes ended at Skyline School  in Northwest Portland today on a bittersweet note without Kyron Horman, the 7-year-old who vanished from the school 11 days ago.

"I'm disappointed the year is over already because I think the kids need each other right now," said Beth Smith, walking onto school grounds to pick up her 12-year-old daughter, who was Kyron's reading buddy.

"She's still scared," Smith said. "Her whole security has been taken away from her."

Smith said her daughter, a sixth-grader, is worried that the person who snatched Kyron could return to the school.

"She said from the get-go he didn't just walk off," Smith said. "He's a quiet boy. He follows the rules. He listens. He loves his family."

His disappearance has cast a pall over the elementary school like the shroud of gray clouds that hammered it today with hail. Still, teachers, staff and parent volunteers tried to end the school year on an optimistic note with a mid-day school assembly planned long before Kyron went missing the morning of June 4.

"The overall message was to celebrate the entire school year while recognizing it had been a difficult last week and a half," said Matt Shelby, spokesman for Portland Public Schools, who was on hand for the last day of classes.

With reporters kept off school grounds, everyone gathered for the assembly, which was opened by Principal Benjamin Keefer, who said everyone was wishing for Kyron's safe return. Nate McMillan, coach for the Portland Trail Blazers, talked about the importance of taking responsibility and staying safe over the summer, and Brandon Roy, an All-Star guard for the Blazers, gave his own motivational talk.

The assembly also included a speech by the recently signed goalkeeper for the Portland Timbers soccer team, Adin Brown, and a performance by pianist Michael Allen Harrison, an artist-in-residence for Portland Public Schools.

The mood was generally upbeat both before and after, with kids playing and laughing on school grounds, Shelby said.

"It was good to see the students being kids," he said.

But Kyron's disappearance continues to haunt the K-8 school on a day when law enforcement plumbed leads and divers were sighted suiting up on private property in Northwest Portland.

Smith said she has no plans to pluck her daughter from the school that she and her two brothers graduated from.

She still lives in the house nearby where she grew up.

"We trust the school," Smith said. "I know Mr. Keefer is devastated and heartbroken. He knows each of these kids and their interests. We need to let him know we're behind him 100 percent."

Kyron Horman vigil draws about 400 to Sunset Presbyterian Church
June 15, 2010

Volunteer Dottie Adams and adult ministries administrator Karen Carroll hand out candles to participants in a vigil this evening at Sunset Presbyterian Church.

Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 N.W. Cornell Road, opened its sanctuary for a public vigil of hope for missing 7-year-old Kyron Horman at 7 p.m. today.

About 400 people attended. The evening included songs, prayers and writing of messages to Kyron’s family, then ended with lighting of candles.

“We will also be encouraging people to continue their efforts to put Kyron’s name and face anywhere and everywhere they go,” said Rachel Hansen, one of the vigil organizers.

The sanctuary was also open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today for individual meditation.

The second-grader vanished from Skyline School the morning of June 4.

Kyron Horman update: Dive teams search Multnomah Channel, Sauvie Island for missing Oregon boy

Kyron Horman has been missing since June 4, 2010 and though the search has winded down (1,300 searchers have been sent home) this is hardly a cold case. Investigators with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office continue to seek help from the public , encouraging those with tips to report them.

“There may be one nugget of information out of a thousand in those tips ... but we need your help in finding it. If you have information, but aren't sure of its value, give us a call and let our investigators evaluate it and decide,” Officer Stratton said during a live press conference.

The search resumed as dive teams searched the Multnomah Channel near the Sauvie Island. The search and rescue efforts have been scaled back as the criminal investigation is underway. During a recent briefing and update provided by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Captain Jason Gates described the nature of the case and the change in the investigation.

“The next phase of this investigation will include a secondary canvassing of the neighborhood and school, as well as transitioning out of the command post on Skyline Road.”

Authorities have continued to release information to the public including photos of Kyron Horman’s clothing and glasses similar to those worn when he disappeared.

If you have any information, tips or leads you are urged to contact the Multnomah County Sheriff’s tip line.

Why No AMBER Alert?
June 15, 2010

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Many of you have been wondering why an AMBER alert wasn't issued in the hours after Kyron Horman was first reported missing.

At that point, Kyron's disappearance didn't meet the activation criteria defined by the U.S. Department of Justice, including the reasonable belief that an abduction has occurred or the child is in imminent danger. Those criteria were not originally met in Kyron's case.

The department's guidelines include:

-Confirmation that a child was abducted

-There is a risk of injury or death

-There is sufficient information for the public to receive

-The child in question is 17-years-old or younger

Tracygirl,

I haven't seen anything on the bio mother's occupation so far. She has another son, Quinn McCullough who is older than Kyron, but I don't know how much older. I see there is a Quinn MCCullough in the area who is a freshman in HS, but don't know if they are the same person. He has a facebook page. Desiree was born Desiree Davidson, then married ? McCullough, Kaine Horman and Tony Young.
