At 16, Joran van der Sloot was a star athlete. He had a girlfriend to whom he wrote love notes, and with whom he danced in the rain. Now, he has reportedly confessed to killing a young woman in a hotel room in Peru. Had there been any early signs in the Dutchman of violent behavior?

Back when he was a teen in love, van der Sloot and his girlfriend kept a diary together, which they filled with his poems about love and sexual desire. But their breakup, she says, was hurried along by his "problem with lying" – a trait he displayed to the world with ever-changing accounts of his role, at age 17, in the disappearance of American teen Natalee Holloway, PEOPLE reports in its new issue, on newsstands Friday.

Exactly five years after Natalee vanished in May 2005 on a high-school graduation trip to Aruba, the main suspect in that still-unsolved case stands accused again. But this time, authorities in Peru have a body and a confession linking van der Sloot, now 23, to the murder of Stephany Flores Ramirez, in a case with striking parallels.

In exclusive interviews in PEOPLE, former intimates track the path of the charming young Dutchman who bore his stigma of a possible killer across four continents – from Aruba, to the Netherlands, to Thailand, to Peru – preceding his fateful meeting May 30 in another casino with another young woman.

"All his friends turned their backs on him," says Aline Hibbert, 22, another former girlfriend. An increasingly desperate life accompanied by drinking, drug use and gambling led even his parents to stop supporting him, and as money ran out, he tried to extort Natalee's mom, Beth, by offering details on her daughter's death and the body's whereabouts.

The arrogance, temper and short fuse long witnessed by those around him flared again when – according to his confession – van der Sloot caught Flores reading about his ties to Natalee on his laptop computer. He lashed out, breaking her neck and fleeing to Chile, according to police. "I didn't want to do it," he said to authorities. "The girl intruded in my life."

Isn't 6/10 exactly 5 years to the day that he "confessed" what happened to Natalee, that later he withdrew, as he is doing now, withdrawing testimony he made and claiming victimization.

The three "boys" know what happened to her that night and where...that's as far as they are involved...Paulus and Van Der Stratten took care of her body, the evidence at the place she was murdered, then at the place she was buried, and finally at her final location.....Joran has no idea where she is, that's why he comes up with all these stories...JMHO

Paulus knew Joran would tell someone, remember Joran likes to talk...his dad knew this....

I would have said a definitive NO before the DeVries tapes, but it seems to me that Joran's family got a wake up call that changed things when they watched, along with the rest of the world, Joran talking about being with Natalee when she died.. I'd say "maybe" at this point. There are a lot of others here that would disagree with me, so JMO!!

If you ask me, he ain't gonna talk either...Joran has NO PROOF..they (VDS and Paulus) got rid of everything and he (JVDS) doesn't know where she is to tell anyone...Van Der Stratten isn't worried about Joran talking/trying to work a deal...he has nothing on him...they took care of everything....and who would believe him without proof anyway??? Suspect demanded signed contract in Natalee Holloway extortion plot

JUNE 10--As he plotted to extort money from the mother of Natalee Holloway, suspected murderer Joran van der Sloot insisted that a written contract be signed by both parties, according to an FBI affidavit unsealed today. The document, sworn by Agent William Bryan, details van der Sloot's bid to shake down $250,000 from Beth Holloway Twitty, mother of the late Alabama teenager. Van der Sloot, 22, is the prime suspect in the May 2005 disappearance of Holloway, who went missing in Aruba during a high school graduation trip. According to Bryan's affidavit, van der Sloot offered to disclose the whereabouts of Holloway's body in return for the six-figure payout. During a May 10 meeting at an Aruba hotel, van der Sloot and a Twitty representative "signed two copies of the agreement and took pictures of each other signing the agreement." Investigators contend that the legal formalities were part of an elaborate ruse by van der Sloot, who later guided Twitty's representative to a home where he claimed Holloway had been buried in the foundation. Aruban building records, however, later revealed that the residence was not even under construction at the time of Holloway's disappearance. In a May 17 e-mail to Twitty's representative, "van der Sloot admitted...that he had lied about the location" of the teen's corpse. By then, the Dutch man had extracted $25,000 from Twitty, which resulted last week in him being named in a two-count extortion complaint. The federal rap is the lesser of counts on the criminal docket of van der Sloot, who is expected to be charged with the May 30 murder of Stephany Flores, 21, who was found dead in a Peru hotel room registered to van der Sloot. I know nothing about Peru...I assume that because this is so HIGH profile, they will keep him segregated/safe,until he is found guilty, then thro him to the wolves. Oh, Angie; that baby has died.  Trisome 13 is fatal, and they never live long.

Only about 5-10% of them survive the first year.  It's a copy of 13.  If I had a baby with this, and thank you, Lord, that I never did, I would not want it to survive long with the burden placed on the baby, not to mention that the longer you keep them the dearer they become to you.  Not that you love them anymore, but you just have too many sweet and too many hard memories of a child the longer it lives.

SDB - I don't know about TES but I do know that Dave Holloway and TES have been given the information on the rock videos many time.  If I remember correctly, part of the problem is that Aruba lies and told so many different stories about why those men would be there observing, cleaning and painting and I guess Dave believed them?

I have always thought the rock area was a crime scene. 

So do I, also in Dave's book he said he's saw them putting someone into the trunk and when he got into town a lady said to Dave I'm so sorry I heard they found Natalee today..

Page 108-109:  There had been so many stories and so much speculation that my head was spinning.  Some things occurred that made me wonder if there was a reasonable explanation for them or whether there were people in the police department who were deliberately working against our best interests.

For instance, on June 2, 2005, during those first few days after Natalee’s disappearance, I had traveled to the California Lighthouse to initiate the land search with a group of approximately twenty to thirty tourists and locals.  The light house is elevated about the sand dunes.

The Dutch Marines had been activated and were traveling to the area to conduct there own search.  I was not aware they were going to show up.  But I had to wonder if someone tipped them off that we were going to be in the area searching.  Since it was still very early in the investigation, we did not realize that this area might have been part of a possible crime scene.

Just as we were organizing at the lighthouse, my attention was diverted to a police car that had entered the sand dunes in the distance.  The vehicle was crisscrossing through the dunes, making it appear as though a frantic search was being conducted.  The car stopped by a hug boulder, but it was partially blocked from my view.  Did they find Natalee?  I wondered.  My brother Phil and I noticed two police officers hurriedly looking around in the sand.  The trunk of their car was open, but by the time we were able to get down there in the four-wheeler, the officers were getting back into their vehicles and leaving.

I did not tell anyone else about this incident right away because it was the first day of our search and we did not have very many suspicions at the time.  Subsequently, I reported the officers’ strange activity to the FBI and asked that it only be reported to the chief of police and the prosecutor.

In hindsight, I wonder if they had found Natalee buried in the sand and did not let us know.  Or maybe they were looking for Joran’s sneakers or some other evidence.  It looked very suspicious.  I later heard that a woman came forward who said that she heard about a policeman who helped dig up Natalee’s body from the same area.
