Joran Van der Sloot did not know who was getting into when he decided to vent their anger towards the girl that he said had interfered with his privacy.

If Stephany Flores 21, who allegedly met at a casino in Lima, Peru, had been an anonymous citizen before taking her to his hotel room, his murder may have been left unresolved, like many others in that country.

Missing

It turns out that the girl was the daughter of Ricardo Flores, a prominent businessman in the entertainment field, former racer and former presidential and vice presidential candidate.

When his body was found and Van der Sloot identified in the surveillance video of the hotel, his family played a key role in getting the help of the International Police, Interpol, to find him.

According to published reports, 22 year old Dutchman admitted that he and Stephany Flores had an altercation when he realized his return to his room after buying a coffee at a nearby location, which she had entered his laptop and had inquired about background.

It was a smart move, after the not so clever idea of going to a hotel room with a stranger unknown. But it was too late to rectify the error.

The individual who threw caution to the wind proved to be the same person that five years earlier had spent the night with Natalee Holloway in Aruba.

She disappeared and are presumed dead, his body has never been found. Van der Sloot remains the prime suspect in his disappearance.

In Aruba a lot of people think they came out with it in part to weak laws of that country, and the influence he could have exercised his own father who was a judge. (The Judge Paulus Van der Sloot died earlier this year.)

The Peruvian justice system is not necessarily very strong. There is no death penalty except in extreme cases such as genocide or crimes committed in wartime.

And there is life imprisonment. The details of the case have yet to be determined, but Van der Sloot could face between 15 and 35 years behind bars, or perhaps less since he confessed.

Either way, the time spent in jail, you can expect to live in a hell of Peru.

I was thinking if the house of cards with all the Arbuan officials would actually the fall..then the NL steps in and takes over.  I do not think the NL would be too kind anylonger to anyone involved.  They haven't done anything for Jvds other then say they will do no more for him then anyone else in jail in Peru.  The NL embassy brought some clothes and money..just like they do for others.  No sign of helping Anita or Juran with his problems in Peru.  Ah a NL  camera crew is going over, that Anita appeared to want to go with..but it seems no dice.

We all need to hope that he reveals where NH was buried. In that way Beth and the family can have something to bring home. If he doesn't die in that prison, I think he may give up the location as a way to avoid the general population. A few days in one of those dormatories and I think he may call for the warden and his attorney to make a statement. One guard per 200 prisoners there.

A good bet:  The Over/Under on how many years Joran van der Sloot gets sentenced to prison in Peru and which of the Peruvian hellholes he will ultimately end up in.  There is, after all, no cable television and basket weaving in Peru prisons...well, maybe the later.

Van der Sloot, the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway back in 2005, has confessed to murdering Stephany Flores in his Lima hotel room on May 30.  The talk over these past few days has been about what prison van der Sloot will ultimately end up in and how many years he will be sentenced to serve.  More discussion has centered around the so-called "Law of the Donkey", vigilante punishment in South American nations and whether van der Sloot will ever come out of prison alive.

For the online bookmakers, bets on van der Sloot's fate would seem like a given.  He has already made a name for himself in the world of online poker as an avid player, albeit after the murder, since he wasn't the most successful of players.  His attendance at the Latin American Poker Tour in Lima was just that, a spectator.  Organizers confirmed he was not registered to play.

At least one online bookmaker has told Gambling911.com they intend to steer clear of any van der Sloot bets.

"(We) usually want to stay away from death, murder, jail etc," Sportsbook.com spokesperson Dave Stanley tells Gambling911.com.  Sportsbook.com is the largest online sports betting and entertainment site targeting North America.

Stanley points to more friendly-family odds being offered by his company such as the number of strikeouts Major League Baseball sensation Stephen Strasburg will have this season and which team will win the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
