A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was felt in Toronto, Canada and elsewhere in that country as well as in the U.S. on Wednesday afternoon.

The U.S. Geological Survey placed the quake's epicenter about 24 miles north of Cumberland, Ontario and said it occurred at about 1:41 pm ET.

Many people experienced the shaking based on comments on Twitter and elsewhere but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake.

comments:

Felt it in Liverpool, NY

I felt it all the way in Mid-Michigan

A Canada earthquake shook Toronto and Ottawa at approximately 1:45 p.m. Eastern Time today, June 23, 2010. The USGS reports the quake had a magnitude of 5.5.
Don't know where Northern Rose and Kat_Gram live in Canada, hope they are alright.

Northern lives in the western part of Canada, in British Columbia. Toronto and Ottawa are in Ontario, in the east. Hubby is from Toronto.

Thanks, I have been busy making this for Wyks and not paying attention to news or anything. I'll go check it out as soon as I post Wyks' thingy.
Thanks Brandi, man I'm sick of getting knocked out of here.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that east of the Rockies, "an earthquake can be felt over an area as much as 10 times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the West Coast."

The epicentre of the quake was in Quebec, about 38 kilometres north of Cumberland, Ont., which is on the Ottawa River, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and struck at 1:41 p.m. EDT at a depth of 18 kilometres.

"This particular earthquake was quite deep," said Dr. Alexander Cruden, a professor of geology at University of Toronto. He said a quake at that depth can be felt as far away as 500 kilometres.

Mr. Mallon, a retired farmer who has lived through a handful of earthquakes in the area about 55 kilometres north of Ottawa, said it was by far the biggest he’s seen in his 73 years.

“I was looking at a book when the mirror started swinging on the wall. I caught it before it fell on the floor,” said Mr. Mallon.

“The extent of it varies from house to house, depending on foundations and that sort of thing, but so far it’s mostly pictures and nick nacks.”

“People are a bit shook up because they’ve never experienced such a thing.”

My friend and I were so outraged today when the Jimmy Buffet tickets were gone iin 10 minutes only to appear on eBay that we divided a list and reported and contacted each seller. They have officially been removed from the site.......you wouldn't believe some of the response I got from these sellers " I had no idea, it was my first time to use eBay and my professor wouldn't let me off that day" yeah right! Like you JUST found that out 20 minutes after snatching the free tickets and offering them for sale for $2400.00.......yeah, I'm buying that BS.

Can't imagine anyone likes Jimmy that much.

NEW ORLEANS – Tens of thousands of gallons more oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday after an undersea robot bumped a venting system, forcing BP to remove the cap that had been containing some of the crude.

The setback, yet another in the nine-week effort to stop the gusher, came as thick pools of oil washed up on Pensacola Beach in Florida and the Obama administration tried to figure out how to resurrect a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling.

When the robot bumped the system just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, gas rose through the vent that carries warm water down to prevent ice-like crystals from forming, Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said.

I just love those old ads, I have a bunch here that I enjoy looking through.  That is so funny about the beer and baby. After my first daughter was born, my mom came and helped, she spent many, many years working in the nursery at the hospital. I was having trouble with the milk flow to feed her, and my mom said here you drink this glass of beer and by golly there was no more problems  LOL
