Father of slain Peruvian student hopes others learn from her death

Lima, Peru (CNN) -- Hours after he spoke to a judge for the first time about his daughter's killing, Stephany Flores' father told family and friends at a memorial service that he hoped others would learn from her death.

Ricardo Flores said Wednesday he had sheltered his children too much from the evils of the world.

"Sometimes we're wrong, and I have been wrong a lot. Because I have permitted my kids to know the good, and not the bad. My kids have everything, but also we have to take away from them sometimes," he said. "Don't commit the error that I made."

Authorities say 21-year-old Stephany Flores was killed a month ago. Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot was charged with first-degree murder and robbery after authorities found Flores' body in a Lima, Peru, hotel room registered to him.

Ricardo Flores, who helped search for his daughter when she didn't come home May 30 after a night out at a casino, gave a formal statement about the facts surrounding the case to a judge Wednesday.

Later in the day, about 300 people gathered at a Lima temple for the memorial service. Peru's National Police Chorus sang "Eternal Love" while a slideshow of photographs flashed on a projector screen. Longtime friends remembered Stephany Flores as "a great friend" with a "contagious smile."

Stephany Flores came from a privileged family, but was a humble person who was extremely giving, friends told CNN.

She once wrote a list of 23 businesses that she wanted to do well in, and then checked them off one by one as she decided whether she was really interested in pursuing them.

At the time of her death, Flores had told her friends she was the happiest she had ever been, they said.

Van der Sloot was twice arrested in connection with the disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway in Aruba in 2005, but he has not been charged in that case.

Police said van der Sloot admitted that he attacked Flores on May 30 after she read an e-mail in his computer connected with the Holloway case.

After killing Flores, police say, van der Sloot took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested June 3.

He was returned the next day to Peru.

Van der Sloot is being held at the Miguel Castro Castro Prison in a high-security area where only two of the 10 cells are occupied. He has no contact with the general prison population.

Van der Sloot's attorney filed an appeal Wednesday to a ruling that upheld the admissibility of his client's confession and the legality of his detention.

Thank you Northern Rose.

Ricardo Flores quietly speaks but ... his every word of wisdom is heard and comprehended.  Something akin to Natalee ... Stephany was blessed with the love of an amazing family.

Joran van der Sloot Undergoes Interrogation

Flores told the AP in an interview at his home that the loss of his daughter may ensure that van der Sloot is punished for that death.

"My daughter was an instrument for this girl (Holloway), so that there can be justice," he said. "He's going to have to talk now."

NOTICE

The server may be down tonight from approximately 11pm CST and may be down for several hours up to all day Saturday.  This is NOT the server upgrade but is needed maintenance.

Okay, I'll say it -- EVERYONE else is also thinking it. This site/forum is popular enough to be able to afford a decent server for the traffic it generates. It is not just for my selfish interest - it is for Klaas. It is just shameful that the UNBELIEVABLE time and effort she has put here for over 5 years at little or NO compensation is being treated like this.

I would be happy to make a contribution.  I have no idea what a new server costs, but if we knew
maybe we could help out.

I know Red uses his own server so we won't lose all the archives should a public forum go out of business or something.  But I have no idea how much one would cost but think many of us would make a donation.  We have too many years invested not to do so.

Wreck, if you have an Amazon search box, it will be at the top of the page in the grey right hand margin area.

I don't know if an ad blocker blocks that out or not.  There is also always one on the Front Page.

They can't do this for many people.  Just another example of the influence being totally opposite for Joran this time.

I just love it!  Such perfect karma for the monster.  He picked the wrong victim in Peru.  But if Aruba had done thier job, this family would not be suffering right now.

From the video:

(Ricardo Flores' words as they were translated)

Quote
It is not easy to lose your only daughter, so that you can come to learn that there is something to be thankful for in life.

The words I’ve had from the first moment are not mine.  My daughter wants that what we’ve gone through, are going through, and will go through for the rest of our lives... because it’s a wound that will never heal; serve so that all of you and through you, other human beings won’t go through what we’ve gone through.

We as parents force ourselves to make something of our lives, so that our kids will have what we didn’t have, so that our kids enjoy what we didn’t enjoy; spending so much time at work.

Snipped>> "Stephany Flores came from a privileged family, but was a humble person who was extremely giving, friends told CNN.

At the time of her death, Flores had told her friends she was the happiest she had ever been, they said.

Van der Sloot was twice arrested in connection with the disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway in Aruba in 2005, but he has not been charged in that case."

Stephany sounded like a girl who knew what she wanted to do, and she wanted to do so much. Natalee was so full of life with hopes and dreams for the future.  They both were determined to make something of their lives. Then there is pos Joran, who didn't have a dream, he lived for the moment and didn't care if he hurt or damaged others, it was all about him. He has no mental disease, nothing that he can contribute his evilness to, it's just him, that is the way he his. It's just hard for us, as normal people to wrap our minds around this, so we search for other reasons to make it more acceptable, like mental incapacity.

He saw something he wanted (the girls) and just took it, then destroyed it, with no thought to how it would effect another human being. Stephany and Natalee both had wonderful lives and who knows what they would have contributed to this world? What wonderful gifts would they have bestowed because they lived? But this miserable excuse for a human being took that all away. He doesn't care, he doesn't care how it effects his own family. If you don't help Joran, you are worthless on this Earth, he'll step on you with no conscious like a bug.

It's people like you guys and their own families that make Stephany and Natalee live on, that help their stories to continue and hopefully help women in the future to avoid such a consequence. Joran's life is just a pathetic excuse for air.  Such monsters should only exist in stories under the covers with a flashlight.

So I know at times you all get so weary... so weary of the run around, the lies, the deepness of how bad this all is. But take heart that your investigations, your discussions and even just your encouragement of others, helps each case. We see with unblinded eyes. What one may miss, the other sees.  Keep up the good fight, maybe, just maybe it will help one of your future daughters, grandchildren or even great grandchildren. Just knowing what you have done, no matter how small you may think it is, should help you sleep at night. Together, we will help those who have fallen and bring down the mighty Goliath.

Someone who knows about IT once said that a new server would cost $30K.  That was years ago, however.

It may have been Nonesuche as she knows about thing like that.  Was it you, None, and do you know what one would cost today?

There are websites that host servers for a monthly fee.  I imagine that's what will be done.  I try and stay out of that part of this site.

When I joined GardenWeb years ago, it was $25 per annum and with that, one got a pretty little shirt that said something about membership.  That was years ago .

I suggested to Mrs. Red once that we do something like that.  I post at a political blog also that requests contributions.  I don't have a problem with it.

VERY expensive---you have to consider the storage space needed also.  I would contribute but I don't think a few would be able to come up with the money needed for this site.  I agree with the amount of traffic this site generates they should be able to raise a lot toward a new server or even a used one.  Where I work we just replaced all our servers (9) with a Virtual Machine---Neat.  So companies like us who have used equipment (but good equipment) could be a solution-just offer them up for sale at very reduced costs.
