Officials with the Valero Aruba Refinery announced today that maintenance would soon begin at the refinery with the aim of potentially restarting the refinery later this year, unless economic conditions deteriorate.
The refinery was temporarily shut down for economic reasons in July 2009. Since that time, employees have remained on the payrolls while Valero has considered its strategic options for the refinery. Those considerations will continue, but economic conditions have improved to the point where restarting and operating the refinery is possible.
In addition, the tax settlement agreement recently approved by the Aruba Parliament has provided Valero the visibility on future taxes so that it could make the decision to restart the refinery.

Even when the refinery was making a profit in the past - The Aruban Govt imposed such high taxes on exports - Valero was losing money - hence the shutdown

They KNOW they can never win a case that says "he did not do it". The best possibility is to get him declared "insane". The odds of that are a "million to one" -- but that is all they got!

Doesn't anyone else think it is important to inform the media that stating "no evidence" does not mean the same in Aruba as in the US?  There is more than enough circumstantial evidence to prosecute Joran here in the US.  I was shocked when I discovered the "no body, no crime" get away with murder law in Aruba.

Tourists should know this before entering Aruba.  I would NEVER, EVER enter a foreign country that has this law.  Think about it.
