Before Stacy Peterson went missing from her Bolingbrook home in 2007,  Bolingbrook had another high profile missing person case - the case of 13-year-old Rachel Mellon.

Rachel disappeared January 31, 1996. She stayed home sick from school that day. She was last seen alive by her stepfather, who investigators considered a person of interest in the case. Without a body, however, Bolingbrook investigators had little to go on. The stepfather claimed that he went to walk the family's dog that afternoon. He was gone a while, he told investigators, because he said the dog got off his leash and he had to chase him. He said by the time he came back home, Rachel was gone.

The stepfather and Rachel's mother have since moved to Tennessee.

Now, 14 years later, people are still hoping to learn what happened to Rachel. A private investigator, working with caretakers of the Findrachel.com website, says his company is offering a $20,000 reward for a limited time only. A new age progression photo of what Rachel may look like now has also been released.

James Miller says they decided to put a time limit on the reward offer to prompt anyone with information on the case to come forward quickly. The offer is good until midnight on July 9.  Miller says the award will go to anyone who can lead investigators to Rachel's body or the the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for her disappearance.

Miller says he's been encouraged by breaks in other "cold" cases recently such as the 1993 massacre at Brown's Chicken in Palatine. In that case, a woman came forward with information nine years after the killings.  Two men have since been convicted and sentenced n that case.

Late last month, an arrest was made in the 2004 kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of 3-year-old Riley Fox of Wilmington.  That case was considered cold until the FBI stepped in earlier this year,

Anyone with information on Rachel Mellon is asked to call Bolingbrook Police at 630 378-4772.

Intelligence Report: What happened to Rachel Mellon?

Quote
"It's really kind of hard to understand where Vince is coming from, why he would be uncooperative, because I think he has something to hide," Skemp said. "He was the last person there and there are some other circumstances that kind of point in his direction. Unfortunately, it's all circumstantial. But I really can't understand why Amy acts the way she does. It's her daughter and she is trying to sweep it under the rug and forget about it."

Rachel's mother needs her butt kicked.
