Dad is in a secure nursing facilty that allows for him to go out on the grounds.  With this cold weather, we are aware that he favors a lighter jacket he owns that has snap closure.  His heavier jacket has a zipper and is difficult for him to close.  Everything we have found has a zipper & snaps which will only confuse him.  Trying to find one with just snaps...and that's the challenge.  (or velcro may work)

If anyone knows of a dealer or store where adaptive closthing is sold, please help us.  His boots are also heavy and harder for him to walk in.  Our efforts in local stores have found nothing light and easy.  He's wearing a couple of pairs of velcro sneakers now while he makes his daily, all day walks with his buddy.

Preferred, lightweight, yet warm coat with snap closure and lightwieight snow type boots with velcro closure...

Bless you if you can help.  Been surfing all night and have shopped but only finding zippers & heavy boots....need help.

I gave my mother some chukka boots from Land's End for xmas, they were extremely light and slip-on's, plus she said it was the first time her toes had been warm all winter?

here is the link to the men's, not as cute as mom's red ones with the sherpa cuff but hopefully just as light and easy and warm?

Another suggestion, zippers are attached to web woven strips, so if you were to cut the zipper out as close to the zipper as possible and use a bottle of "fray check" from your local sewing store - it won't ravel and then he's left with just the snaps to contend with?

toward that end, here is a heavy jacket with velcro and zipper, but again I would suggest simply cutting the zipper off at the joining webbing and using fray check. the velcro looks closely spaced and the cuffs have knit inserts and velcro too?

2NJ: I see the problem! Just snaps are hard to find in a really warm jacket! The link below is for an LL Bean Coat that lists the comfort range from -15* to 25* ( but that's for a 30 year old doing moderate activity ). It has buttons, not snaps, but they look large. I'm sure you would rather not have it modified, but if you can't find anything, that alteration could easily be taken care of at any tailor shop.

I'll keep looking!

Thanks, None....My sister & I spoke earlier about Landsend & LL Bean....I looked but was focused on 'velcro' for boots and 'snaps' for coat.  The Chukka boots may be perfect....thank you so much for suggesting, and if your mom loves them, then maybe Dad, who loves lightwieght non-combersome clothing...we may be on target.....

As I said, bless you for your help....(with a bow on top)

AHAH! Here's one that has zippered pockets, but has front snap closure and velcro flap to close. It's really warm! Perfect? Well...............it's a wallet buster!  Crying or Very sad

Oh, and None....all of the jackets I saw over the weekend had both zippers & snaps....I was not thinking of tailoring at all Sad ...so that is an option Wink .

CBB.....that jacket would probably be something like I'd pick, but buttons I fear would be problematic.  I saw two great coats Saturday that I loved for him...nice and warm and good looking, but I knew the buttons might be a challenge for Dad.  Just want to make his dressing himself as simple as possible....and then some.  Some of these things, CBB, we don't think of...my sis was the one that figured out why he wasn't wearing the heavier coat....she was right on....Business venture anyone??  Wish I had the moolah to back it... Laughing

Thank you both....(((Hugs))))

Our posts crossed each other....a down jacket with snaps is exactly what I mentioned to my sister....knowing Dad, we just have to make sure it's light enough...therefore down came to mind...he's never worn anything cumbersome....he's also got preferences for shirts, pants, sweaters....he may have dementia but those things have not gone away...thank God....

2NJ: Nothing is lighter weight than down. I have a similar one for skiing and it's like wearing nothing at all as far as weight is concerned. I'll keep looking................

you need boots too, right?

I agree, cbb...yes, we're looking for light boots, too.  Those he had that I brought to the facility are heavy...care giver told me he may have trouble walking with them...so I told her I'd look for light ones.   We have to keep in mind that what he has on during the day may be on for long periods of time....so I was thinking of those types that were almost sneaker like from a few years back..what to make sure he has traction, too....who knew I'd be coming up short now....(will probably look through some of his magazines tomorrow....sometimes that stuff is in VFW & other publications.)

These are similar to those he owned & I brought to the facilty....except his were tied....the bottoms of his were heavier, but it could just be the brand.

Thanks, CBB...don't knock yourself out...you have enough on your own plate.  I appreciate your suggestions and see what tomorrow brings.  You've been a wonderful help.

Will check in tomorrow....God Bless.

These are like the sneakers, but they weigh more than the ones above, and don't mention to what degree they are warm. The reviews say they are warm..............?

Now, you have me thinking about size...and I'm not sure if he wears 9.0 or 9.5 wide, which I think is what's right...(neither are available in this boot...aaaghhh)  It's too late for me......

Nite, 2NJ! It must be so hard to have your Dad in the nursing facility. I'm like you and glad he's still holding on to his own likes and dislikes! After all, that's part of him.

I did all I could to take care of my Dad when he got sick, and know that your Dad is a lucky man to have you! It's a good thing you're doing, 2NJ, and one that you'll always be glad for.

Hope you find exactly what you will feel good about and that he'll come to love!
