UPDATE: FBI joins the search for missing 4-year-old girl

kmoxnews@kmox.com

LOUISANA, Mo. (AP)  -- Police in Louisiana, Missouri scoured a creek Tuesday morning looking for clues in the disappearance of 4-year-old Alisa Maier.

The girl was reportedly grabbed from outside her home Monday night as she and her 5-year-old brother were playing, with their parents sitting inside.

Police chief Richard Hughes talked about other measures they're taking to find the missing girl.

"We really haven't limited the scope, we're following all leads.  The FBI is here to assist," Hughes said.  "We do have both state agencies from Illinois and Missouri."

Hughes choked up a couple of times as he discussed the case with reporters.

He said the only witness to the alleged abduction was the girl's brother, who told police he saw his sister get into the car with a man he did not know

A photo of Alisa Maier and contact information for police can be found at KMOX.com

Her alleged abductor is described as a white male with dark hair in his late teens or early 20's.

Authorities Believe 4-Year-Old's Abduction was Random
Grandfather, Police Chief ask for girl's return (with video)

LOUISIANA, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - Louisiana Police Chief Rich Hughes fought back tears as he briefed the media on the status of missing 4-year-old Alisa Maier. Chief Hughes said there were very few details into the abduction but they do believe it was random and are looking at surveillance video from a nearby convenience store and looking into all leads. The FBI is also investigating.

Alisa Maier was taken from her front yard around 8 p.m. Monday night. Her parents were home at home at the time of the abduction. An Amber Alert was issued after her five-year-old brother told police a man in a black 4 door passenger car pulled up and took the child from the yard. Louisiana, Missouri is in Pike County, about 90 miles north of St. Louis and sits along the Mississippi River.

Alisa is a white female, 3 feet tall, weighs 40 lbs, with brown hair and brown eyes. She is believed to have been wearing a white t-shirt and blue jean shorts.

There is very little description on the suspect in this case. It is believed Alisa was taken by a white male around 20 years old. He took off in the 4 door passenger car.

The Illinois State Police and the FBI are assisting in the investigation and search. About 60 officers are on the case. Authorities are also asking for the public's help. Anyone who wants to volunteer should go to the Elks Lodge in Louisiana, Missouri, 120 North 5th Street. They will be given assignments.

If you have information, please contact the Louisiana Police Department at 573-754-4021 or the FBI at 314-589-2500. You can also call 911.

Police Search Creek For Missing 4-Year-Old
Girl Abducted From Louisiana, Mo. Home

LOUISIANA, Mo. -- Police scoured a creek Tuesday for clues into the disappearance of a 4-year-old girl who may have been abducted from the front yard of her eastern Missouri home

The creek is behind the home.

Officers said the girl was playing with her brother at their Louisiana home on Monday night when a car pulled up and a man grabbed her.

Police said Alisa Maier has brown hair with brown eyes and stands about 3 feet tall and weighs 40 pounds. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jean shorts.

Investigators said the kidnapper was a man in his 20s with dark hair and dark skin.

Officers said the vehicle was a black four-door passenger car.

Louisiana Police Chief Richard Hughes said that the only witness to the girl's disappearance remains her 5-year-old brother.

Hughes said a weekend carnival had brought more strangers than usual to the town, which is located about 70 miles northwest of St. Louis.

Alisa's great grandmother, Mary Foiles, said the girl's parents were inside the home when the alleged abduction occurred.

Dozens of volunteers passed out fliers Monday in an attempt to find the girl.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

Grandfather pleads for abducted Missouri girl's safe return

CNN) -- The grandfather of a 4-year-old girl snatched from the front yard of her small-town Missouri home pleaded with the public Tuesday for information that could bring her home safely.

Alisa Maier was abducted Monday evening in Louisiana, Missouri, while she was playing with her brother, police there said. Appearing at a news conference Tuesday morning, grandfather Roy Harrison told reporters, "I want this baby back."

"Please, anybody, if you know anything, call this guy back here," he said, pointing to Louisiana Police Chief Richard Hughes. "Call the FBI. Call whoever you need to call."

Alisa was wearing a white T-shirt and denim shorts when she was taken. Hughes said investigators in Louisiana, about 80 miles north of St. Louis, have no indication that her kidnapping was anything other than a random abduction.

Harrison called her "a really good girl, always smiling, happy-go-lucky. We really appreciate everybody getting together to try to help us find her."

Police are examining surveillance video from local businesses in hopes of finding some sign of the abductor, a man of indeterminate age who drove off in a dark-colored sedan with front-end damage, Hughes said. The town of about 4,000 is located just across the Mississippi River from Illinois, where state and county authorities are also involved in the search, he said.

"Ultimately, our goal is to bring her back here to her family," Hughes said.

4-year-old Missouri girl abducted from front yard
The Associated Press
Tuesday, July 6, 2010; 8:05 PM

LOUISIANA, Mo. -- Police are searching for a man suspected of taking a 4-year-old Missouri girl from her front yard in a small, quiet Mississippi River town.

Alisa Maier and her 5-year-old brother were playing in the yard of their Louisiana, Mo., home about 8 p.m. Monday night. The boy told police a man he didn't know pulled up in a four-door car and ordered his sister to get in.

FBI special agent Billy Cox in St. Louis says stranger abductions are rare, but this appears to be one. Authorities have been interviewing the boy, seeking any clues they could get from him.

At least 60 police officers and more than 100 residents are helping to search.

Police have only a vague description of the abductor, possibly a white male with dark hair in his late teens or early 20s.

Search for missing girl draws national attention

Louisiana, MO — 1:30 p.m. update:  The grandfather of missing four-year-old Alisa Maier issued an urgent plea for her safe return Tuesday afternoon.
The girl apparently was abducted from the front yard of her home in the 300 block of North Carolina Street in Louisiana about 8 p.m. Monday, prompting a nationwide Amber Alert and a search by 60 law enforcement officers and more than 100 residents from as far away as St. Louis.
“She’s a really good girl,” Roy Harrison said about his granddaughter at a news conference. “Always smiling, happy-go-lucky. We really appreciate everybody getting together to help find her.”
Louisiana Police Chief Rich Hughes, who has children about the same age as Alisa, broke into tears as he discussed the investigation.
“Our goal is to bring her back here to her family,” Hughes said. “We are following up on all leads. We are getting a lot of leads.”
Hughes would not discuss whether the suspect in the case, identified only as a tanned young white man who was driving a black car with front end damage, was connected with a carnival that was set up on the Louisiana riverfront from July 2 to 4 for an Independence Day celebration.
Hughes called the incident a “random abduction.”
Special Agent Mike Kaste of the Federal Bureau of Investigation said authorities are not ruling out any leads.
“We’re exhausting everything,” Kaste said. “We’re looking at every possible avenue to generate leads.”
The search began door-to-door targeting every dwelling in Louisiana. Volunteers also were searching area woods and camps along the Mississippi River. Counties surrounding Louisiana in Missouri and Illinois were combed.
“We’re working in concentric circles,” Kaste said. “We expand as the leads take us.”
Media from Quincy to St. Louis descended upon the town of 4,000 residents. Aaron Mermelstein, a field producer for NBC News, was preparing for live cut-ins on “Today” on Wednesday morning. Reporter Jeff Rossman was being flown in from New York.
“I think it’s the kind of story that makes parents’ and grandparents’ stomachs across the nation tighten,” Mermelstein said.

Terry Harrison was among the dozens of people Monday who combed the area around Louisiana searching for a four-year-old girl who apparently was kidnapped as she played in her yard Sunday night.
Harrison said he was distantly related to Alisa Maier, and felt he had to join the effort to find her.
“It’s very nerve wracking,” Harrison said. “You have somebody who’s kin to you. You never think it’s going to happen to you.”
Authorities say Maier was playing with a brother when a black car pulled up about 8 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of North Carolina just south of downtown Louisiana.
A man in his late teens or early 20s grabbed the girl and drove away, authorities said.
Alisa is a white girl with brown hair and brown eyes. She is three feet tall and weighs about 40 pounds. She was wearing blue jean shorts and a white T-shirt at the time she was taken.
The suspect was described as a tan-skinned man with dark hair.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Missouri Highway Patrol, Illinois State Police, Pike County Sheriff’s Department, Louisiana Police Department, Louisiana Fire Department and other agencies were going door-to-door in the city limits and combing the woods and fields outside of town on both sides of the Mississippi River.
“It’s really too early to make any type of assessment,” FBI Agent Mike Kaste said at 8:30 a.m. “Right now, we’re in the beginning of developing leads.”
Leon Reeves lives a block from the missing girl’s family.
“It’s just hard to believe,” Reeves said. “This is a quiet neighborhood. We have no break-ins or crime around here. It was a shock. It’s a shame. She’s just in the hands of the Good Lord now.”
Michael Hoffman and his 16-year-old daughter, Sarah, joined the search. Hoffman and his wife have a girl who just turned four.
“There’s someone from our community who needs help,” Hoffman said. “It’s an obligation.”
Jamie Stoops brought his wife Heather, and their two children, Dalton and Taylor, to join the search.
“We all grew up in this town,” Stoops said. “This town has always been safe for kids. This kind of hits home.”
Fliers were posted around the area and the Elks Lodge at 120 N. Fifth in Louisiana was coordinating volunteer efforts.
People with information were asked to call Louisiana police at (573) 754-4021.

FBI looking for clues to find abducted Louisiana, Mo girlv

ST. LOUIS (KMOX)  -- The FBI is releasing more details this afternoon about the search for Alisa Maier -- the 4-year old Louisiana , Mo girl abducted from her front yard Monday night, while her mother was inside fixing dinner.

FBI Agent Mike Kaste says it's not clear whether the little girl was taken by a stranger or someone she knew.

"Right now what we're looking at is an abduction," Kaste said, "For me to stand here and tell you that she knew or did not know him,  it just wouldn't be appropriate, because right now we just don't know."

Kaste indicated that the family is not a focus of the investigation, but added that they will go "where ever the investigation leads them."   The town's police chief, Richard Hughes, was asked about the marital status of the parents, and he remarked that it has "no bearing on the case."

Anxious to find the girl,  agents are asking for the public's help from anyone who may have seen the vehicle, described as a black four-door passenger car with some front end damage.

Authorities have also obtained surveillance video from several locations in the area, hoping for more clues.

Earlier today, police searched a creek looking for clues.   Volunteers are going door to door and passing out fliers

The only witness to the abduction was the victim's six-year old brother, and authorities say it's unclear from his description whether his sister went to the car willingly, or against her will.

The suspect is described as a white male with dark hair in his late teens or early 20s.

Alisa Maier is white, 3-feet-tall and 40 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.   She was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jean shorts when she was taken.

Louisiana, Mo., is located near a bridge that crosses the Mississippi into Illinois.   Authorities say it's possible the abductor went to Illinois with the girl.

4-Year-Old Alisa Maier Apparently Kidnapped Outside Her Missouri Home
Posted by Caroline Black

LOUISIANA, Missouri (CBS/KMOV) Police in the town of Louisiana, Missouri have teamed up with the FBI and are searching for a 4-year-old girl believed abducted from the front yard of her home.

PICTURES: Alisa Maier Kidnapped

An Amber Alert has been issued in hopes of locating Alisa Maier. She was last seen playing with her brother in the front yard of their home, which is located 80 miles north of St. Louis.

According to the missing girl's 5-year-old brother, a black, four-door car pulled up around 8 p.m. and snatched his sister.

The boy told police that car may have damage to the hood or the front end, reports CBS affiliate KMOV.

He also caught a glimpse of the apparent abductor and described him as a white male with dark hair, who's believed to be in his late teens or early twenties.

The family says they can not think of any family members or friends who would want to take Alisa, and have reason to believe the kidnapping is random.

Alisa Maier stands about three feet tall and weighs 40 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jean shorts.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Louisiana(Mo.) Police Department at 573-754-4021, the Pike County Sheriff's Department at 573-324-3202 or the FBI at 314-589-2500.
