UPDATE: Missing 4-year-old found alive

A 4-year-old girl who was abducted from the front yard of her Missouri home has been found alive, St. Louis County police said Wednesday.

The Amber Alert issued for Alisa Maier, 4, missing from Louisiana, Mo. since Monday was cancelled Wednesday morning after Maier was found wandering around a parking lot in Fenton.

St. Louis County Police said they got a call around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday of a young child left unattended at a car wash on Old Gravois Road. The responding officers discovered that the child was Maier.

Police believe he child was intentionally abandoned there. Witnesses said a dark colored 4-door midsize vehicle was seen leaving the area when the child was spotted. The car is possibly black or brown and could be a Ford Escort, according to police. The vehicle was making a loud noise as if there was a hole in the muffler or missing the muffler. The car also was missing the hubcaps or wheel covers on the driver side.

The driver of the vehicle is described as a dark skinned, white male with short dark hair in his early 30's.

Anyone with information on the vehicle or suspect should contact St. Louis County police at (314) 889-2341.

Wednesday morning Maier remains at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. According to the hospital, Maier is doing well and happy to be reunited with her parents.

Pike County authorities had issued an Amber Alert Tuesday. Maier was reportedly playing in her front yard Monday evening with her brother when someone in a black 4-door car pulled up and put her inside.

Police are expected to release more information late Wednesday morning. Globe-Democrat.com will post more details as they become available.

Alisa Maier found alive in Fenton

FENTON, MO (KSDK) -- St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said investigators are following up on dozens of leads since Alisa Maier was found alive after someone abducted her outside her Louisiana, Missouri home, which is about 80 miles northwest of St. Louis.

Doctors at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital checked Maier over and released her to her family on Wednesday morning.

Investigators believe a man snatched the four-year-old girl from the front yard, which prompted the Amber Alert. She was found more than 24 hours later on Tuesday night.

"I can't find words -- it's unbelievable. God was watching over that baby," said Kathy Tepen, Alisa's great aunt.

She was found wandering at a gas station car wash in the 600 block of Gravois Road in old town Fenton around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. St. Louis County police said several witnesses contacted them to report seeing a young boy unattended.

Witnesses told detectives they saw the child walking away from a vehicle. After police met and spoke with the child, county police realized it was Maier.

Due to the ongoing investigation, authorities could not answer questions regarding the child's condition.

The gas station does not have surveillance cameras outside the building, police said.

Maier was taken to SSM St. Clare Medical Center in Fenton and was checked out and then released.  Then, she was taken to the St. Louis County Police West County Precinct.  She was taken to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday for further tests.

NewsChannel 5 Photojournalist Joe Young was at Children's Medical Center when Maier arrived.  She was carried into the hospital wrapped in a white blanket and appeared to have shorter hair than what she had in previously released pictures.

Cardinal Glennon spokesperson Bob Davidson spent some time with Alisa and her parents at the hospital.

"They're elated. They all seem like they are really tired," said Davidson.  "You know they have been through a lot the past couple of days.  But, imagine having your child go missing and then reclaiming her. What an uplifting joyous moment for them."

Maier's family members released a statement through Davidson that they appreciate all the prayer and thoughts and all the volunteers' efforts.

Maier's grandfather, Roy Harrison, had not seen his granddaughter in person, but he had cell phone pictures sent to him after she was found.  He and the great-grandmother confirmed Maier's hair had been cut since she was abducted.

"She's fine -- she's not harmed in anyway," he said.

Family members say Maier was playing in her front yard Monday evening with her brother when a brown or black four-door passenger car pulled up and took her, according to St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch.  Witnesses said the vehicle could have been a Ford Escort.

Witnesses at the car wash also reported the suspect vehicle had a loud muffler and was missing its wheel covers on the driver's side.

Chief Fitch said they have received dozens of tips since the suspect vehicle description was released and some were "very good leads."

The Louisiana, Missouri Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, FBI and St. Louis County Police Department are all investigating the abduction.

Harrison said the person responsible for Maier's disappearance took the first step by returning her; now he hopes the person will continue to do the right thing.

"He's done the first," he said. "He needs to admit he's got a problem, turn himself in and be accountable for what he's done."

The FBI joined the investigation after the Amber Alert was issued. Louisiana Police Chief Richard Hughes said that the only witness to the alleged abduction remains the girl's brother. The brother told police he had seen his sister get into the car with a man he did not know.

The suspect driving the car was described as a dark-skinned Caucasian man in his early 30s, with short dark hair.
Authorities said both of Alisa's parents were inside the home when the abduction occurred.

"I'm going to pick her up and hug her and tell her I love her," said Mary Foiles, Alisa's great-grandmother.

FBI agent Mike Kaste told reporters at a Tuesday afternoon news conference that the family had moved to the area recently and Alisa was born in Ohio. He said the Maier's have family in the area. He said no one has been ruled out as a suspect in the kidnapping.

Agent Kaste said some physical evidence had been gathered at the scene, but he would not go into details. A neighbor was quoted by numerous media outlets as saying the mother pursued the vehicle after the abduction. Kaste said he has no report of such an event.

The FBI is also looking at surveillance tape for possible information on the person who took Maier. For instance, there are 19 Shell gas stations in northeast Missouri, three of them in the Louisiana, Missouri area. Surveillance cameras are in each one. The managers of the stores are downloading all the video from the past couple of days for the FBI in the hopes of finding the driver of that vehicle.

He also said a carnival had been in town over the weekend, which brought a large number of strangers to the area. He did not say any connection had been made between the carnival and the abduction.

Prior to Maier being found, investigators were questioning local registered sex offenders with the hope of gathering new leads.

"This is a very tight-knit community, so someone here would stick out. This would not be like New York, where you're going to be bumping shoulders with people," Kaste said.

Anyone with information on the possible whereabouts of the vehicle is asked to contact the St. Louis County Police Department at 314-889-2341. You can also contact CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS, which is offering up at a $2,000 reward for information in the case.
