Amber Alert Issued After Mom Chases Car Carrying Abducted Daughter
Girl Snatched While Playing in Front Yard Outside Missouri Home, Mom Gives Chase, Police Issue Amber Alert

Alisa Maier's mother made a desperate but futile attempt to catch up to the car carrying the man who abducted her 4-year-old daughter in Louisiana , Missouri, according to a neighbor.

"She got in her van and took off up the road in the direction that her son pointed but the car got away," neighbor Anita Mcklevis told ABCNews.com.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert  for Alisa, who was apparently abducted Monday evening while playing with her older brother outside the family home on South Carolina Street.

Police met with the FBI to discuss the case and volunteers went door-to-door with fliers, asking for help from anyone who may have seen Alisa.

The girl was playing with her brother in the front yard as her parents prepared dinner inside the home, according to police and neighbors. Her brother told police that a black four-door car, probably a convertible with tinted windows, pulled up to the house and a thin man made off with the Alisa.

Alisa has straight brown hair, brown eyes and weighs about 40 pounds. She stands 3 feet tall and was last seen wearing a white-shirt and blue denim shorts.

Mcklevis said her son was standing outside a friend's house near the place of the alleged abduction and saw a dark car circling the neighborhood for hours before Alisa went missing. "He didn't pay too much attention and went inside the house," she said.

"When my son came back out, he said Alisa's brother was saying that a young man who looked to be in his early 20s had grabbed his sister and taken her away," Mcklevis said.

Mcklevis described Louisiana, Missouri, located 75 miles north of St. Louis, as a quiet, safe place.

"We were up all night just thinking about this," she said. "This is kind of town where you don't have lock your doors. You know everybody. The kids play outside all the time." Mcklevis said her son gave a statement to the police Tuesday.

Alisa's brother described the alleged abductor as a thin white male, possibly in his late teens or 20s with dark, curly hair. He was driving a black or dark-colored four-door sedan with possible front end damage, according to authorities.

FBI joins case after Missouri girl taken from front yard

LOUISIANA, Mo. -- Police in Louisiana, Mo., have issued an Amber Alert for Alisa Maier, 4, who apparently was abducted Monday night while playing with her brother in her front yard.

On Tuesday morning, local police met with the FBI to discuss their strategy in the case. Volunteers were going door-to-door with fliers, asking for help from anyone who may have seen Alisa after 6 p.m. Monday.

Alisa was playing in her front yard in the 300 block of North Carolina Street with her 6-year-old brother on Monday night. Shortly before 8 p.m., a black four- door passenger car pulled up, a man took the child from the yard and drove off, police say. The girl's parents were inside the home and unaware of what was happening, police say.

The girl's brother described the abductor as a thin white male, possibly in his late teens or 20s with dark, curly hair. He was driving a black or dark-colored four-door sedan with possible front end damage, witnesses said.

Louisiana Police Chief Rich Hughes said about 60 members of law enforcement are involved in the investigation. Illinois authorities are helping, too, because the girl's home is about a quarter-mile from the Champ Clark Bridge, which leads into Illinois.

A vacant lot separates Alisa's yard from Highway 79. Mayor Thomas Wallace mentioned the promixity to the highway, lending credibility to the theory it was a stranger-abduction. In addition, the Lowery Family Carnival was in Louisiana over the Fourth of July weekend and brought strangers to town.

"Somebody could have been on Highway 79 and could have seen the children in the yard," Wallace said.

Louisiana, a town of 3,863 people, sits on the banks of the Mississippi River. Alisa's home is on the southeast part of town, in an area with a mix of homes and businesses. The Pike County Medical Center is across the street.

The townspeople "are all kind of shocked that something like that would happen in Lousiana," he added.

A prayer vigil is schedule for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverfront in Louisiana.

Wallace, mayor for the last 23 years, said he didn't know Alisa's family.

Anyone wanting to help in the search can sign up at the Elks Lodge, at the corner of 5th and Georgia streets in Louisiana.

"Just praying and hoping," said Kim Ferguson, who came from her home in Rockport, Ill., to join the volunteer effort Tuesday.

The town has been divided into sections so volunteers can coordinate their efforts. Anyone wanting to volunteer must show identification and provide a cell phone number to organizers, Ferguson said.

The Louisiana Press Journal reports that information from security cameras has been gathered throughout the night as one effort to find the kidnapper.

Alisa is white with brown hair and brown eyes and 3 feet tall. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jean shorts.

Anyone with information about the abduction is asked to call the Louisiana Police Department at 573-754-4021.

Louisiana is on the Mississippi River, about 80 miles north of St. Louis.

Police Search for Missouri Girl Abducted From Front Yard

LOUISIANA, Mo. -- Police scoured a creek Tuesday for clues into the disappearance of a 4-year-old girl who may have been abducted from the front yard of her eastern Missouri home.

Police said Alisa Maier was playing with her 5-year-old brother outside their home in the town of Louisiana Monday night when a man pulled up in a black four-door passenger car and took her away, KSDK reported.

The only witness to the alleged abduction was the girl's brother, who told police he saw his sister get into the car with a man he did not know, Louisiana Police Chief Richard Hughes said at a news conference Tuesday.

Police have only a vague description of the alleged abductor. He is possibly a white male with dark hair in his late teens or early 20s.

Authorities have issued an Amber Alert that describes Maier as 3-feet tall and 40 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jean shorts when she disappeared.

Alisa's great grandmother, Mary Foiles, said the girl's parents were inside the home when the alleged abduction occurred.

Police searched a small creek behind the girl's home Tuesday morning for clues. Dozens of volunteers passed out fliers.

Hughes said a weekend carnival had brought more strangers than usual to the town, which is located about 70 miles northwest of St. Louis.

Search for missing girl intensifies

Louisiana, MO —   Terry Harrison was among the dozens of people Tuesday who combed the area around Louisiana searching for a four-year-old girl who apparently was kidnapped as she played in her yard Monday night.
Harrison said he was distantly related to Alisa Maier, and felt he had to join the effort to find her.
“It’s very nerve wracking,” Harrison said. “You have somebody who’s kin to you. You never think it’s going to happen to you.”
Authorities say Maier was playing with a brother when a black car pulled up about 8 p.m. Monday in front of the family's home in the 300 block of North Carolina just south of downtown Louisiana.
A man in his late teens or early 20s grabbed the girl and drove away, authorities said.
Alisa is a white girl with brown hair and brown eyes. She is three feet tall and weighs about 40 pounds. She was wearing blue jean shorts and a white T-shirt at the time she was taken.
The suspect was described as a tan-skinned man with dark hair.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Missouri Highway Patrol, Illinois State Police, Pike County Sheriff’s Department, Louisiana Police Department, Louisiana Fire Department, other agencies and residents were going door-to-door in the city limits and combing the woods and fields outside of town on both sides of the Mississippi River. The search was limited to counties surrounding Louisiana.  “It’s really too early to make any type of assessment,” FBI Agent Mike Kaste said at 8:30 a.m. “Right now, we’re in the beginning of developing leads.”
Leon Reeves lives a block from the missing girl’s family.
“It’s just hard to believe,” Reeves said. “This is a quiet neighborhood. We have no break-ins or crime around here. It was a shock. It’s a shame. She’s just in the hands of the Good Lord now.”
Michael Hoffman and his 16-year-old daughter, Sarah, joined the search. Hoffman and his wife have a girl who just turned four.
“There’s someone from our community who needs help,” Hoffman said. “It’s an obligation.”
Jamie Stoops brought his wife Heather, and their two children, Dalton and Taylor, to join the search.
“We all grew up in this town,” Stoops said. “This town has always been safe for kids. This kind of hits home.”
Fliers were posted around the area and the Elks Lodge at 120 N. Fifth in Louisiana was coordinating volunteer efforts.
People with information were asked to call Louisiana police at (573) 754-4021.
