Two Year Anniversary of Haleigh Cummings Disappearance

2011-02-09 by: Captain Johnny Greenwood

Haleigh CummingsTomorrow marks two years of investigative efforts into the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings. During the early morning hours of February 10, 2009, Haleigh Cummings was reported missing from her residence in Satsuma. Sheriff Hardy’s interest in the public’s desire to bring Haleigh home, have led him to release the following update on the investigation.

As has been reported in numerous media releases in the past, investigators from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and investigators from agencies throughout Florida have invested thousands of man-hours into the investigation thus far.

At this point, the evidence and investigatory effort has minimized the likelihood that Haleigh’s disappearance is the work of a stranger. The individuals with direct knowledge of Haleigh’s whereabouts the night she went missing have still failed to provide the necessary information to bring this case to a logical conclusion. Contradictory statements provided by these witnesses indicate that they are concealing information from the investigators.

Sheriff Hardy realizes the importance of keeping the public involved in this case, and appreciates all of the leads that have been provided thus far. Every lead that has been provided has been acted on by investigators. He also wants to assure the public, but mainly Haleigh’s family, that investigators will continue to aggressively pursue this case to the end. By no means is this case being considered “cold”. There are still individuals who hold important information, which if provided to investigators, could solve this case.

There have been numerous requests for interviews with detectives and other agency members concerning the investigation. Due to the sensitive nature of this case, the agency members are still not participating in formal interviews. There is also not any additional information that investigators could provide that hasn’t been given in media releases numerous times in the past.

What a miserable event to celebrate,
another missing child, vanished from the hands
of the incompetant !

I celebrate knowing you are in the arms of the Lord,
and out of misery. Running with Zahra, and Natalee for
sure, and having the TIME of your life.

Justice is coming.
Many of us here, realize the importance
and necessity of it for you !

2 Years: Haleigh Cummings Remembered
Authorities Consider Missing Girl To Be Homicide Case
POSTED: Thursday, February 10, 2011
UPDATED: 7:53 am EST February 10, 2011

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- Two years ago Thursday, a 911 call was placed to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office saying 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings had vanished.

Family and friends of the girl who disappeared from her Satsuma home in February 2009 will gather at 6 p.m. Thursday in Welaka to remember Haleigh. That vigil will be held at 216 Fourth Ave., the home of Annette Sykes, Haleigh's maternal grandmother.

Haleigh will also be remembered at the regular Wednesday night service at the Glen St. Mary Baptist Church that Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, attends, WJXT-TV reported.

Despite their hopes and prayers that Haleigh is still alive, Putnam County investigators said last April that they consider this a homicide case and no longer a missing person investigation.

Two Years Later: Where's Haleigh?

By Julie Martin
Published: Thursday, February 10, 2011 12:48 AM EST

Relatives of a young Satsuma girl who vanished two years ago will hold a prayer vigil tonight.

Haleigh Cummings, a 5-year-old blonde-haired kindergartner, was reported missing from her South Putnam home by a babysitter. A massive search came up empty and Sheriff Jeff Hardy last year said investigators believed Haleigh was dead and the case was considered a homicide.

Family members, however, resist that idea.

Haleigh's great-grandmother, who lives in Welaka and will host the vigil, says the family continues to hope the child is alive.

"She's out there somewhere and we're still looking for her," Annette Sykes said.

Meanwhile, since Haleigh's disappearance, authorities have followed up on thousands of leads and invested thousands of man-hours looking for the child, said Capt. Johnny Greenwood, a spokesman for the Putnam County's Sheriff's Office.

"Investigators will continue to aggressively pursue this case to the end," Greenwood said in a statement. "By no means is this case being considered cold."

Haleigh vanished from her home while Misty Cummings, a teenager who was married to Haleigh's father Ronald Cummings briefly, was baby-sitting.

Witnesses from that night have concealed vital information from detectives, Greenwood said.

"There are still individuals who hold important information, which if provided to investigators, could solve this case," he said.

Last April, Putnam County's Sheriff Jeff Hardy labeled the case a homicide after investigators concluded the girl was likely dead.

Despite Hardy's statements, Sykes said she believes Haleigh is alive.

"We are looking for a live little girl," Sykes said. "We don't believe that she's dead. We don't care what the sheriff says."

A prayer vigil for Haleigh will be held tonight at 6 p.m. at Sykes's house located at 216 Fourth Ave. in Welaka.

Vigils marking the first anniversary of Haleigh's disappearance as well as her birthday were held last year, attracting relatives, supporters and television cameras.

"We'll keep holding them every six months or so until she's found," Sykes said.

The family will continue to hope for Haleigh's safe return until investigators provide proof of her death, she said.

"They have not told us or shown us anything that tells us that she's not alive," she said." We have been offered nothing. All we have is one person's word and that's his opinion."

Haleigh was reported missing at 3:27 a.m. on Feb. 10, 2009.

No trace of her has been found despite massive searches by law enforcement officers and volunteers on land and water.

Haleigh's disappearance initially was described by authorities as a child-abduction case. At the conclusion of a three-day April search of the St. Johns River, Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy officially labeled it a homicide.

Then-17-year-old Misty Croslin was babysitting Haleigh the night she went missing.

Croslin told deputies she put Haleigh to bed just after 8 p.m. and went to bed herself a couple hours later. Croslin said she awoke around 3 a.m. to use the bathroom when she noticed the kitchen light on, the door propped open with a cinder block and Haleigh gone.

Haleigh's father, 26-year-old Ronald Cummings, was returning from his night-shift job at PDM Bridge in Palatka when the child was reported missing.

Diving squads, ground searches, bloodhounds and helicopters scoured areas of the St. Johns River and Satsuma woods while door-to-door interviews were conducted and officers searched vehicles at roadblocks.

Two camps were set up in the neighborhood to house the maternal and paternal sides of Haleigh's family. For more than a month, tents remained aglow with hundreds of candles used in nightly vigils while national news media spotlighted the child's disappearance.

A month later, Croslin and Cummings married at Sykes' house in Welaka.

Authorities named Croslin the key to the investigation after her statements to investigators reportedly had numerous inconsistencies about what took place between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. the night Haleigh disappeared.

In January, Cummings, Croslin, Hank Croslin Jr., Cummings' cousin Hope Sykes and a former search volunteer Donna Brock of Orlando were arrested following a month-long narcotics investigation into the trafficking of prescription pills.

They remain in prison today.

A victim advocacy group, the Justice Coalition, said the maternal side of Haleigh's family was to have a private vigil in a Baker County church Wednesday night. Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, is from Baker County.

A public vigil is planned for 6 p.m. today at the home of Annette Sykes, Haleigh's paternal grandmother, in Welaka.

Haleigh Cummings Disappeared Two Years Ago Today

PALATKA, Fla. -- Family and friends are still hoping someone will come forward to crack the case of missing Haleigh Cummings.

She disappeared two years ago today from her home in Satsuma.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office stated it doesn't consider the case cold. But it said some people are providing inconsistent statements and officials think Haleigh, 5 at the time of her disappearance, knew her abductor.

Teresa Neves, Haleigh's grandmother, said live on "Good Morning Jacksonville" today that she hangs on to hope that Haleigh will be found alive.

Both Croslin and Ronald Cummings were convicted in 2010 on charges of selling drugs. Croslin was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while Cummings agreed to a plea deal to cut his sentence to 15 years.

As for what happened to Haleigh, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office released a statement Wednesday, saying they did not believe her abduction was the work of a stranger.

Investigators said they believe the people connected to the case, including Croslin and Haleigh's father, have not told everything they know about what happened:

Author of the following article is Robin Smythe and then her response to an email that was sent to her regarding the article.

Haleigh Cummings - 2 years later, deputies think family hasn't told whole story

SATSUMA --

Thursday marks two years since Haleigh Cummings was last seen alive in her Putnam County home.

But investigators said they are convinced there are people connected to the case who know exactly what happened to her.

Haleigh was 5 when she was reported missing on Feb. 10, 2009.

Deputies quickly launched a massive search, but no sign of the girl ever surfaced.

The last person to see Haleigh alive was her father's then-girlfriend, Misty Croslin, who was later briefly married to Ronald Cummings during the search.

Cummings and Croslin were subsequently arrested on drug charges and sentenced to prison.

Cummings, now 27, was sentenced in September to 15 years in prison for dealing prescription pills with Croslin and three others.

Croslin is serving 25 years in prison on prescription drug-trafficking cases, Record archives show.

Those who are believed to have direct knowledge of HaLeigh's whereabouts on the night she disappeared have not provided investigators with any viable leads, according to Wednesday's release from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators have not considered the disappearance a cold case yet, the release insisted.

"Detectives still respond to every tip or lead we get," Greenwood said. "Although most of them don't pan out to be anything, we still follow up with every tip."
