<snipped for content>

Collins and Priem were sleeping in a tent with Syler and Christina's 12-year-old daughter when the boy disappeared, D'Evelyn said. Priem's 14-year-old son and a friend were sleeping in a nearby tent.

Thanx cartfly!

I snipped the above part because there it says Sylar was in the tent with the two adults and the 12 yr old.

This has been reported three different ways now:

According to Dwight D'Evelyn, spokesman for the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, the custodial mother claims she last saw Syler around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday inside a tent immediately adjacent to the tent she slept in.

AND

Priem claims she last saw Syler around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. He was sleeping in a tent with Priem, her mother, Nancy Collins, and Priem's 12-year-old daughter.  Priem's 14-year-old son and his 14-year-old friend were sleeping in an adjacent tent.

It's maddening when we get conflicting reports early on in a story.  Am wondering if it was reported differently by Priem/others, or if this is just sloppy early reporting by the media?

Oh wait.. I gave the wrong link and info on one.  lol  Geezz I am adding to the confusion!!

One article said that all the kids were in one tent, the two adults in the other.  Looking for that one.

Let me know if it's something I can help you out with and fix/edit the post, Wyks.  Muffy
(It might be easier to rewrite the post, but looks like you did a lot of work...)

Two-Year-Old Syler Newton Vanishes From Arizona Campground
The Boy Had Been With A Woman Who Planned to Adopt Him
July 27, 2010

Numerous search and rescue personnel continue to comb a forest area south of Flagstaff for a little boy missing since Sunday morning. As of Monday evening, authorities say there's still no sign of 2-year-old Syler Newton.
(National Center for Missing & Exploited Children
)

Investigators Search for Missing Syler Newton
The search is continuing and the FBI has been called in to aid in the investigation. The 25 campers who were in the area when Syler was reported missing have all cooperated with officials say authorities. Detectives are also reviewing the reservation list for the campground during the time Syler was there.

"We've expanded the search to encompass a larger area that spans several miles," said D'Evelyn. "We're using bloodhounds and flyovers and a lot of ground units."
D'Evelyn estimated that about 40 searchers were on the ground combing the campsite. It is rough terrain filled with rocks and trees, as well as a flowing creek.

"We had a rain blast yesterday that came through, that kind of helped in a way because it cooled everything off," said D'Evelyn. "But for a two-year-old, it's been fairly warm overall and the overall concern is really dehydration."

Anyone with information about Syler's disappearance is encouraged to call the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office at 978-771-3260.

Thanks Muffy!     I will as soon as I can find it, lol.  Am thinking it was said on a video.  <groan>

Did you catch the spelling of his name?  Bio mom says it's spelled Sylar.  Evidently she also has said his middle name is Orion, and yet in the article quoting her on other things, they have it as O'Ryan.

I know what you mean about the conflicting information in the articles.  I think nowadays it's often  poor reporting.  Agencies are so desperate to get the news out there first, they do it without checking the facts.  And what's really bad is sometimes they don't even go back and do the corrections so misinformation get's repeated and folks start thinking it's true. And it's confusing because we can go back and find links to articles that conflict and we sit and wonder which one is really correct?  JMHO

Exactly!  There was a day... (am thinking Walter Cronkite) where journalists prided themselves on getting the facts straight.  Sigh.

Beautiful area, thanks cartly!  And there's a map at that link too, which gives a better idea of where this campground is.

At the following link are videos that show the campground and area, so many trees and rocks, the water.  I cannot imagine a lil one that young, barefoot, wandering over those rocks, in the dark, alone.     Scary.  Am thinking that had he just wandered off, he likely didn't go far before just sitting down and crying for mommy.

Also at this link, you can hear the phone plea by the bio mom.

You're so right Wyks, so much conflicting info from the news. It sure does look like a beautiful area. I haven't seen any word on any men being with the family. I guess I just find it a little unusual for a mom and grandma to take the kids camping in a tent without a male coming along. Not that the women aren't capable but there are times when men are handy to have around....

I guess my kids are just different.  They never wondered around in the dark at that age.  First thing they always did (and still do) is wake me, whether it's water, bathroom, or scary dream.  I just can't imagine a little guys like that walking away in the dark.  What could he have been thinking about?  The playground?  Bathroom?

This news article from Tuesday, has a bit more detail about the sleeping arrangements:

<snip>

the missing child is believed to have crawled out of his sleeping bag and moved past Priem, her mother, and her 12-year-old daughter to get outside. The child also moved past a nearby tent wherein slept Priem's 14-year-old son and a friend. Then Syler Newton vanished into the night.

I presume this is a private adoption but wouldn't a background check on the adoptive family be required before the adoption could be finalized.
