Cartfly, I used the above link for the 911 calls, thanks!

Very weird.. listening to those calls.

The first call is answered by a 911 operator.  The call was made by the 14 yr old friend of the family.  He told the 911 operator that he was at the campsite next to Beaver Creek, said that someone in his friends family was missing, and the others were out looking.  Enough info that the 911 operator said ok, hold on for the sheriffs office, then transferred his call.  The call was lost as soon as the sheriff answered tho.  So the sheriff didn't actually speak with the 14 yr old friend.

When the sheriff answered the phone, I guess he didn't realize it was a call sent thru by the 911 operator?  And the 911 operator didn't stay on the line with both to make sure that the call went thru properly?  Seems a weird way to handle 911 calls, much time was lost because of this, IMO.  The 14 yr old friend, when he didn't get to talk with the sheriff's office, why didn't he call the 911 operator back?  Maybe he just figured he had told the 911 operator enough info and figured help was on its way?  Well it wasn't, and nothing seems to have been done.

Why didn't the custodial mom make that 911 call?  Well I can understand that she likely was running around looking for Sylar.  Then why didn't the other adult, her mother, make that call?  Or another adult in a nearby campsite, who had to have been awake with all the commotion of looking for Sylar?   Why have a 14 yr old friend make that initial call?

The second call was made about 2.30a, by the adult camp host who seems to have called the sheriff's office directly, not the 911 operator.  But the sheriff's office didn't know anything about Sylar being missing, said no they hadn't received any info yet.  So the camp host begins to explain where and what etc.  But the one at the sheriff's office the camp host was talking with doesn't seem to grasp the info very well.  Asks the camp host 'what State he was in'.  (Say what??????)  And the camp host didn't seem to have much info to give beyond where and what. The camp host thinks the boy got there sometime earlier but not sure when, didn't know his mom's name or the boys name, (and the camp host's campsite was the one right next to Sylar's family campsite!!)  Finally gets out enough info for the sheriff's office to say they would send someone out, then they hang up.  The first patrol unit got there a half hour later, at 3a.

All in all, just weird.  IMO.

From WS:

Being a 911 operator I transfer calls constantly throughout my tour. When you transfer a call you identify yourself and say im transfering you a call. If a call is disconnected you say there a missing at cedar creek and give them the persons cell #.. A cop should have been dispatched regardless. This is a total screwup. IMO

~~~
And I agree.
Authorities Still Uncertain If Sylar Newton Wandered Off or was Abducted
August 1, 2010
The desperate hunt for missing 2-year-old Sylar Newton continued in Arizona Saturday, according to Prescott News, as Yavapai County investigators and various local, state, and federal agencies pressed on
 in their search for the little boy. It has been a week since the child, wearing nothing but a diaper, was reported missing in the middle of the night. It is believed that Sylar Newton simply wandered away from his tent at the Beaver Creek Campground where he and his adoptive family were camping over the weekend. However, investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the child was abducted.
Besides continued search efforts at the campground, which has been secured since the child went missing, Yavapai County authorities also began a systematic search through roughly 200 tons of landfill debris. The Sheriff's Office obtained the cooperation of the Gray Wolf Landfill in Dewey, Arizona, the site where refuse from the Beaver Creek Campground is deposited, and identified certain areas of the landfill where the campground's waste had been dumped. FBI agents and forensics specialists assisted Yavapai County Sheriff's Office personnel with the search, which has as yet provided no new information regarding Sylar Newton's disappearance. However, authorities say they will continue the landfill search because other loads from the campground have yet to be isolated.
Detectives have also canvassed nearby campgrounds and communities in their widening search efforts.
Authorities responded to a missing person call from the Beaver Creek Campground early Sunday morning, July 25. They discovered that a 2-year-old male child, Sylar Newton, was believed to have wandered off. His adoptive mother, Christina Priem, told investigators that the child had been asleep in the same tent with her, her mother, and her 12-year-old daughter. Her son and a friend of the son had been in an adjacent tent. Priem found the child missing around 12:30 a.m. She and her family searched for over an hour, then called police around 1:45 a.m.
Sylar Newton case: Searchers dig through trash at landfill in an attempt to find missing 2-year-old boy
Searchers began digging through an Arizona landfill on Saturday in an effort to find missing 2-year-old boy, Sylar Newton.
According to Yavapai County Sheriff’s spokesperson Dwight D’Evelyn, deputies, the FBI, and forensics specialists have dug through tons of trash at the Gray Wolf Landfill for any evidence that may help them locate Sylar.
The little boy vanished in the early morning hours of July 25, during a family camping trip at Beaver Creek Campground in Rimrock.
KGUN reports that authorities continue to search the landfill, as well as investigate Sylar’s family members.
The report indicates that custodial issues existed between the boy’s adoptive family and his biological mother.
Investigators presume lost boy, 2, dead
Investigators shift from rescue to recovery mode
By JON HUTCHINSON
Special to the Courier
CAMP VERDE - It's becoming ever more frustrating for the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office but officials say finding Sylar Newton continues to be the No. 1 priority.
Manpower, technology and law enforcement expertise has not been enough so far to locate the child who vanished while sleeping beside his custodial mother in a tent at the Beaver Creek Campground more than a week ago.
After nine days of searching, Sheriff Steve Waugh and two leaders of his investigative team faced a sea of reporters Monday afternoon to update the process.
The search was scaled back Saturday to what Search Commander Sgt. Jeff Newnum calls a "limited continuous search. It will go on as long as we have areas to search."
Lt. Tom Boelts of the Criminal Investigation Bureau said, "We are confident that there is no body in the search area" and "we believe the child was taken from the camp site and is no longer alive. We are now in a recovery mode."
The campground host called 911 about 3 a.m. Sunday, July 25. When search crews arrived, campers had already begun searching for the child. The "Hasty Team" was brought in first to begin combing the campground.
Sheriff Waugh said, "A 2-year-old has no survival skills. When they are hungry, they cry. When their diaper is dirty, they cry. It's a rugged area and we thought we would hear him crying for those needs. That did not happen."
The family has been cooperative during interviews, Waugh said, but officials have yet to complete analyzing polygraph interviews. Christina Priem is adopting the child. She was with her mother, and three other children.
Boelts would not identify specific persons of interest: "We have not ruled anyone in or out."
The Sheriff's Office has canvassed sex offenders in the Verde Valley and combed through 200 tons of garbage taken from the campground at the Grey Wolf landfill.
There still are video camera films to examine from surrounding stores and businesses.
Behavior analysts from Utah and experts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have advised detectives on a child's movements, which would have been limited to less than a mile radius around the camp.
Boelts said the agency has received numerous tips. "We have the usual psychic tips. We have had tips from the National Center, that I would rather not go into. We have also had tips reference Internet activity."
The Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team with manpower from Boston, San Francisco, New Jersey and Phoenix have assisted in the search. Horses were brought from Coconino County. Search crews had access to sonar equipment from Pima County. They checked water pools, used cameras in wells and even checked vault toilets.
Newnum said to date, 380 search personnel have invested 4,109 hours over the past eight days and searched 8.5 square miles, working with lines of 15 people one arm length apart. If there were clues, "we would not have missed them," he said.
"It's heartbreaking," Sgt. Newnum said. Many of the searchers have children as well. "We fell in love with Sylar even though we never met him.
"I have four kids at home and you go home and hug your kids. Nobody wanted to stop."
Even so, the search and the investigation continued as reporters were briefed. The campground has now reopened, with posters everywhere asking visitors to help find the missing 2-year-old from Flagstaff.
Sylar Newton case update: Authorities believe missing 2-year-old is dead, say he was abducted
August 2, 2010
On Monday, authorities announced they believe 2-year-old Sylar Newton was abducted and they now presume him to be dead.
The little boy vanished in the early morning hours of July 25, during a family camping trip at Beaver Creek Campground in Rimrock.
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said Monday the case has now turned into a criminal investigation. Although sheriff’s investigators don’t know whether Sylar was dead or alive when taken, based on evidence found at the scene, they believe he was kidnapped.
To see more photos of Sylar and a video report, click here.
AZ Central notes that officials believe Sylar is dead because there was no trace of him near the campsite and if he wandered away on his own, he would likely not have survived past 96 hours, according to statistics.
After a nine-day search of dumpsters and landfills near the campsite in the hopes they would find evidence that would lead them to Sylar, no credible leads have materialized. Reports indicate law enforcement is also investigating the infant‘s family.
The sergeant in charge of the Sheriff’s search-and-rescue team, Jeff Newnum, said “It’s heartbreaking, absolutely heartbreaking.”
According to recent reports, custodial issues exist between the boy’s adoptive family and his biological mother.
Authorities continue to question a number of individuals, however, no suspect(s) or person(s) of interest has yet been identified.
Sylar has blue eyes and brown hair, and is about 3-feet tall and weighs 20 lbs. He was wearing only a diaper. Anyone with information regarding his case is asked to call authorities at 928-771-3260 or 911. To remain anonymous when providing information call the Yavapai County Silent Witness toll free at 1-800-932-3232.
Missing Arizona toddler case now a criminal probe
August 2, 2010
RIMROCK, Ariz. (AP) - Northern Arizona authorities say a toddler missing since late last month from a campground is feared dead, and the case has turned into a criminal investigation.
Yavapai County sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said Monday that investigators don't believe that 2-year-old Sylar Newton wandered off on his own as his custodial mother said.
The boy was last seen the night of July 24 at the Beaver Creek Campground near Rimrock, where he was camping with his custodial mother and her family.
D'Evelyn says investigators believe the boy was taken from the immediate area. A nine-day search of landfills trash bins and other areas of the campsite turned up no sign of him.
D'Evelyn says authorities still are looking into custodial issues involving the boy, the woman who was caring for him and the boy's biological mother.
This is probably a super-ignorant question, but I'm confused: why would LE say that they believe he was abducted and presume that Sylar is dead unless they have physical evidence of such? I mean, they wouldn't just come out and state that during a criminal investigation unless they had strong proof, would they? (Please forgive my naivete. I'm still new at this kind of thinking!)
That is very suspicious another 2 yo disappearing that close to Syler's disappearance.  I don't understand why the LE in that county is saying that Syler is dead.
If he wandered off he wouldn't survive this long without water and if kidnapped statistically they  don't survive this long.
