Early a.m. Search and rescue crews resume search

Morning Terri Moulton Horman makes her Facebook wall private.

11 a.m. FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele says the Hormon family "is not speaking to the media because they do not believe it's in the best interest of finding Kyron."

Noon At a news briefing, Multnomah County sheriff's Capt. Mike Shults reads a statement from Kyron Horman's immediate family: "Kyron's family would like to thank people for support and interest in finding their son. The outpouring of support and continued effort strengthens their hope. We need for folks to continue to assist us in our goal. Please search your properties -- cars, out buildings, sheds, etc. Also check with neighbors and friends who may be on vacation or may need in assistance in searching. There are a lot of resources here to help you search, so please don't stop. It is obviously a difficult time and they want to speak to the public so you can hear it from Kyron's family as they come together to share their message. Their objective is to keep the focus on Kyron and not about anything else."

9:45 p.m. Portland Mountain Rescue receives a call from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office to join the search.

Not sure if this was posted yet.

http://www.thehinkymeter.com/2010/07/29/kyron-horman-case-considering-motives/

I’m sharing this for a couple of reasons.  To show that there ARE stepparents out there who are not mature enough and not emotionally stable enough to be stepparents.  As a stepparent I can tell you that I take issue with anyone who wants to try to cast stepparents – in some blanket stereotypical fashion – as evil people.  I think a person is either bad or good – but not by label.  So there are bad parents (note Teghan’s mother, or Casey Anthony) just like there are bad stepparents.  But I also share this with you because I wonder…could this voice a possible motive behind Terri’s thinking – IF she was, in fact, involved in Kyron’s disappearance?  Read these words carefully and consider that question.

From this thread on “iVillage Garden Web:  The internet’s garden & home community” in the forum “Stepfamily”.  Thread title “Can’t accept my Stepson”.

http://www.thathomesite.com/forums/load/step/msg011826118329.html?60

Approximately 3/4’s of the way down the page a post by “stepmom2kids” posted on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 18:35:

I hate my step kid too. Its not pleasant to think of your husband with another woman making babies, much less having to care for them yourself as a free babysitter, and all the bull that comes with it. Out in the wild, hippos, lions and various other mammals will kill these offspring. I can’t stand my step kid, and he lives with us Frown
Anyways, if I didn’t know him I’d say he’s a very sweet kid, that has a speech disorder/learning disorder, and as long as I wouldn’t have to be around him for extended periods of time, I’d like him, or be indifferent. But since he’s my step kid and I’m his main caretaker, I harbor a lot of resentment, that I worry may harm my health carrying all of this secret hate around, or that it will come around band bite me in the ass somehow later on. It is very unnatural having step kids, very unnatural to love them, it goes against nature is how it feels anyway.  I have often wished he’d get out of my life, but we can’t afford to pay child support and I have my own daughter to worry about. If we pay more than we can afford each month, how am I going to take care of my own daughter? That would agonize me much more than gritting my teeth everyday and enduring my stepson’s presence. I too would get up and do the gig if I only had to have him 3weeks out of the year. I used to wish that he would choke to death, and one day at a buffet it actually almost happened, man, did I regret that wish, I cried so much, I felt so sorry for his helpless little face as he chocked for air. I couldn’t have lived with the guilt if he’s dad wouldn’t of been there to save his life. Now I just wish he’d get abducted by aliens or something, Just kidding. He’s okay sometimes, but usually talks like a +++++ behind his years. I think he has some kind of learning disability that makes him very good with numbers, but a social +++++ (in my spiteful opinion). According to the dad he is a genius…Pff.. HAHA! What happened to me, I used to be nice, I still am a very nice person, it was normal for close friends to call me one of the nicest, accepting friends, accepting and befriending anyone for who they were. But being a step mom has brought out the worst in me, and is certainly the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I feel like Angelina Jolie in that movie where the police give her a kid that is not hers and he’s calling her “mom”, she throws a pan at the wall and shrieks, “I’m NOT YOUR MOTHER, DON’T CALL ME THAT!!!”. That’s what I want to do when he calls me mom. Instead I shutter inside, and on the outside, I smile sweetly and say, Yes? This is what my life will be from now on because I married a good guy who already had a kid.

Oh gosh this is the saddest thing I have read in a very long time. I think back to my children's former stepmother/step fathers girl friend and I can imagine her writting this. Heatbreaking.

I love my step daughters, they are my bonus kids. I love the fact I have 2 daughters, after having 3 sons and I didn't have to go through one minute of labor! I love taking care of them. I always make sure they know the home we live in, is our home as a family. I cannot imagine my life without them.

Kyron’s parents testify before grand jury
 Share

By Thom Jensen KATU News and KATU.com Staff

Story Published: Aug 2, 2010 at 4:38 PM PDT

TIP LINE - (503) 261-2847

PORTLAND, Ore. - The parents of missing 7-year-old Kyron Horman testified before a grand jury Monday afternoon, according to a source at the Multnomah County Courthouse.

Kyron’s mother, Desiree Young, and his stepfather, Tony Young, left the Multnomah County Courthouse out a side door following their testimony and were escorted by sheriff’s deputies.

They said nothing and left in an unmarked car.

Kyron’s father, Kaine Horman, left separately after more than three hours of speaking with jurors. He also had no comment.

DeDe Spicher, a close friend of Kyron’s stepmother,Terri Horman, was asked to testify before the grand jury last week but never actually spoke to jurors.

Sources have said Terri and DeDe have not been able to account for an hour and a half to two hours on the morning of June 4.

Neither Terri Horman nor DeDe Spicher have been charged with any crimes or named suspects in the case, but the family has said they believe Terri was involved in Kyron’s disappearance and that DeDe knows something.

Last Friday Desiree Young made a plea for anyone who knows Terri or DeDe to come forward.

“They need to come forward even if they have nothing, even if they have something small, they need to come forward because it could be the smallest piece that helps solve it,” she said. “If they know them or have talked to them ever, they need to come forward and just share what they know.”

KATU News has been told that Spicher is now talking to detectives but it is unknown if she will be called back to testify before jurors.

If she is forced to talk, she would be granted immunity under Oregon law.

The grand jury in this case could hear testimony for weeks or months and it could also hand off the case to a new grand jury. Experts say testimony usually wraps up within a couple of weeks and the process of getting answers and a possible indictment in the case is moving forward.

“It’s clear that the district attorney, who is the legal adviser to the grand jury, is now confident enough to start this process. Hopefully, that will lead to an indictment,” said Bruce McCain, an attorney and former Multnomah County sheriff’s captain.

“They (Kyron’s parents) are probably going to be the first in a long list of civilian witnesses who will be joining the investigators and boxes and boxes of evidence in this process,” he said.

The district attorney’s office won’t confirm how long the grand jury has been seated or how long it expects jurors to hear testimony.

I am pleased.

As long as DeDe was only involved in assisting Terri in covering up wrongdoing committed against the person of Kyron ... I believe that immunity from prosecution in exchange for the truth is a necessary compromise.

Janet

If it leads to finding Kyron, I agree, depending, of course, on the extent of the "cover up."  If it doesn't lead to finding this child, then I wholeheartedly disagree.  For example, if she helped "cover up" the crime by disposing of material evidence, then no way is it a fair compromise.  But if Terri confided in her and she just decided to shut her pie whole, and she didn't otherwise do something affirmative to cover up a crime, then ok.  But think of the pain she has caused so many people and then decide whether she deserves to be let off "scot free."

Once Kyron is found, time no longer matters.  So I say wait it out, have patience, then nail every SOB that had a hand in the cookie jar.

Thanks Blonde.

This is another "scratch you head" moment.  Why did Kyron's family made the decision not to go public for almost two weeks following the disappearance?

Was it all about damage control regarding family dynamics?

And Medford Police Detective Tony Young, Kyron's stepfather, offered his take on the what happened June 4, the day Kyron was last reported seen.

“I absolutely believe that Terri Horman is involved in Kyron's disappearance,” he said.

Young said he suspected Moulton Horman early on, when he was explaining to the family how their privacy would disappear as detective proceeded with their investigation.

“She instantly started to express some displeasure at that, feeling like she was being persecuted,” he said. “I thought that was an unusual reaction so early.”

A number of years ago ... I took a sabatical from work when my two eldest were preschoolers.  In that period we had two children in our care for almost two years.  Jessica was three months and ... brother Jason was three years old.

It was love at first embrace.  Two years later when these children were taken from our home and returned by CPS to their biological mother ... our family and extented family missed them terribly.  I cried myself to sleep for a month and vowed never to take in foster children again ... the hurt of separation was too much to bear.  However ... life went on and ... the hurt faded with time.

My point is ... I thought I loved these two little munkins as my own but ... I now realize ... looking back ... I did not.  If my own had be taken permantly from my care ... life would not have gone on ... the hurt would not have faded with time.

Janet

Maybe it is not the same, the attachment/love for biological children versus for adopted/foster children. I don't know.

But, I do know a few adoptive parents, who they swear love their adopted children just the same as they love their biological ones.

Maybe in your case you knew deep inside that one day the state would come for them? I hope the two kids are in a loving family atmosphere with a recovered mother.

I'm sure you treasure the time spent with them.

I can't help to think that if your separation from them was so painful, imagine what the two children went through, specially the little one who was three months when you got her and was over two years when she left.

Kyron was obviously loved by his father, based on the many pictures of them around the net. He may have been a lousy husband, but he seemed a fine dad to Kyron and Kiara.

But, looking from another angle... just as Terri wouldn't make step-mom of the year, Kaine wasn't too thrilled with James, either... and I wonder if he ever kept in touch with Quinn.

Here’s the main portion of an email McCain sent:
This morning around 9:00 am I received a telephone call from Mark DeWitt, a 51-year old single farmer who lives in Riddle, Oregon. … When I took his call he expressed relief in “finally talking to a human” after leaving unanswered calls to the MCSO tip line. I told him I no longer worked at MCSO and I am not part of the investigation at all. He understood that but asked me to pass this info along to the authorities.

DeWitt told me he was driving on 99W near Junction City around noon on Wednesday, June 9–the same day Captain Mike Shults delivered his press statement without the families present. DeWitt said a white pick-up truck driven by a female with brown or reddish hair came up fast behind him. He noticed in his rear view mirror that a boy with short dark hair and glasses kept popping his head up in the front seat, only to have the driver push his head down. The pick-up passed DeWitt and turned on a gravel road near an old mill site in or near the town of Monroe, Oregon. DeWitt said the pickup turned onto a side road where it stopped to meet a “cranberry” color sedan from which a heavy set red head female and a male wearing a baseball cap emerged. DeWitt said the pickup driver got out and took the boy into a heavily wooded area where they were followed by the other two–with the male carrying a shovel he removed from the sedan trunk. DeWitt continued into town where he stopped at a gas station to ask for directions to his destination, which I think was a grain elevator for seed. While out of his vehicle, DeWitt said he heard what sounded like a single gun shot coming from the general vicinity of where he saw the three adults and boy. DeWitt then said he later pulled into a rest area on 99W to use the rest room. As he was heading back onto the road, he was behind a slow moving motor home that was pulling onto the highway.  DeWitt said he then saw the pickup again speeding with the sedan behind it about to collide with the motor home. He said the truck slammed on its brakes and barely stopped short of colliding with the motor home, but the sedan skidded and collided with the rear of the white pickup. DeWitt said it was not a major crash, but the sedan might have some slight front end damage and the pickup might show signs of a “paint swap” in the rear.
DeWitt said he does not watch much television and did not put all of these pieces together until he started following the Kyron story on the news. He said he has called the tip line three times, but with no answer. He also said he reported the incident to a “Eugene Deputy” (not sure if Eugene PD or Lane County Sheriff) shortly thereafter, but before he realized the possible significance of what he saw. I asked him what he wanted me to do with this information and he just wants a “real person” to go check the area – which he says he has since revisited. I told him that’s not a good idea since it might be a crime scene.

I had to leave for another appointment but I called him back around 12:45 while on the road. I asked him if he knew I was an attorney and he said No, he only saw me described as a retired MCSO Captain. I wanted to verify he was not seeking legal advice or representation and we agreed there never was any lawyer-client relationship established. I told him I would pass his story on to someone I knew “high up” in the investigation. But I also told him that one reason why he might not have received a call back is that investigators knew where Terri and the pickup were around 12 noon on Wednesday, June 9.

OMG why didn't LE go check this out I feel sick. Is this for real

This does sound grim. But I was just noticing something (see bolded purple) that puzzles me. Isn't that an awful lot for DeWitt to notice WHILE HE WAS DRIVING??

lol I think I wrote that my children's step father had a girl friend, no that is not what I meant. My husband, their step dad does not have a girl friend.  What I meant was my ex husband had a live in girlfriend that he called his wife although they were not married and my children called her their step mother.

BREAKING NEWS:

Desiree, Kaine and Tony to testify for a Multnomah County grand jury beginning 1 p.m

http://www.katu.com/

do you think they are preparing for an arrest?

The Grand Jury would have to return an indictment first.  If these three witnesses are being called to testify, it says to me that the Grand Jury is still taking evidence.

Jess, forgive me if you've already addressed this, but how long in duration will a Grand Jury usually sit? I'm sure it varies by jurisdiction, but is there a "ballpark" amount of time we can expect evidence to be heard/collected/etc?

It certainly varies from state to state, and it really depends on what the grand jury is being asked to do.  It is my recollection that Oregon works off a rolling grand jury system.  In other words, all crimes come before the court by way of grand jury indictment and grand juries sit whenever the court is in session. I don't believe Oregon imposes a time limitation, but I'm not 100% sure of that either.  Oregon's system does differ from other states that have defined time periods when grand juries sit, and they usually sit for about 2 weeks except in instances when law enforcement requests that a special grand jury be empaneled.  Oregon also handles grand juries by county, which means every county can set its own rules as long as they follow the minimum requirements set forth in Oregon's statutes.

Multnomah County seats jurors for 1 month when selected for the grand jury.

http://courts.oregon.gov/Multnomah/General_Info/Jury_Service/Length_of_Service.page?

Your term of service is for one day or until the trial you are selected for is over, whichever is longer. If you are selected to be on a jury for a trial that lasts longer than one day, your service lasts to the end of the trial. Please be aware that many trials will last longer than one day. You may also sit on more than one trial in the one-day period. If you are selected for a grand jury (a small number of individuals may be selected for these), your service will be for one month.

This doesn't really answer the question being asked, which is "is there a "ballpark" amount of time we can expect evidence to be heard/collected/etc?"  The answer is no because this particular grand jury can pass the case to the next grand jury if it doesn't complete its job within a month.  That process can on for a long time.

Thanks Jess. I wasn't trying to address the unanswerable question that you covered so succinctly. Simply clarifying that in Multnomah County a specific panel would be in service for 1 month before turning over the task to the next jury's service.

We realized the placement of these two precious children would be temporary but ... almost two years later you begin to think ... maybe ... just maybe.  During this period the childrens' biological grandparents and extended family prayed daily that Jessica and Jason would remain in our home as ... their mother had some real "issues".  As it turned out the Mom did turn her life around and married a very supported husband.  They were not raised according to hubby and my "little box" but ... they were raised with love.  We receive a card with a note every Christmas from Aunt and Uncle ... a note sharing the progress and photos of these now grown kids at a very young age who touched our lives.

As far as I know, Terri was given an escort (AKA "Tail") from the second day of Kyron's disappearance. Everywhere she went, the tail went with her.

So, either this man saw someone else doing what he described, or his hot cider has come from the bad batch.

It doesn't hurt to check, but...

One would wonder, IF he heard a shot or shots coming from the area... why didn't he (or anyone else who heard the shot) call 911 IMMEDIATELY?

IF he witnessed a car accident, why didn't he (or anyone else who saw it) call 911 then?

IF his account is correct, he witnessed... a white truck and a cranberry sedan stop by the side of the road, three people (including a child) getting out, one of them getting a shovel, and then the three continued to walk towards the field. This in maybe three seconds that took for him to pass them. Or, did this guy stop to watch?

He then does an errand and on the way back, he finds the two vehicles speeding, and both vehicles hit each other, instead of a camper that was going too slow.  Did the two people driving the cars not see the guy, the one telling this story, and not worry if he would identify them in the future?

This guy has seen pictures of Terri and Dede on the local television news and maybe somewhere else. He knows what Terri and Dede looks like. IF he saw either of them, in the field, with the child, carrying the shovel... why wouldn't he say so?

I doubt his story.

PORTLAND, Ore.  -- The father of missing seven-year-old Kyron Horman confirmed to KGW that he appeared before the grand jury Monday and could possibly be returning on Tuesday.

Kaine Horman told KGW that he appeared before the grand jury in the Multnomah County Courthouse but he did not elaborate on whether he testified.  He was seen exiting the courthouse with Kyron's mother, Desiree Young and her husband, Tony Young on Tuesday afternoon. However, Kaine did not say whether the other two appeared before the grand jury as well.

"Sources" reported that Kaine spent three hours testifying before the GJ on Monday.  What relevant knowledge could he be revealing?

Thanks for the link Janet! GJ could take days, weeks, or MONTHS! Good Gawd! I will have all of my hair pulled out by then. Kaine going in/out of GJ was carrying a backpack. Wonder what he had in it?
