PAYSON, Ariz. -- Police and volunteers in Payson are searching for a missing 4-year-old boy.

Police said Travis Mitchell was one of five kids playing in a wooded area in a neighborhood west of the Payson Airport at about 5 p.m. Sunday. Travis' 10-year-old brother was part of that group. When the kids returned home, Travis was not with them.

According to Sgt. John Heflin of the Payson Police Department, Travis, his brother and the other kids often play in that area. Travis had to go to the bathroom so he headed back to the house, but he never made it.

As soon as they realized he was missing, family and friends started looking for Travis, calling the Payson Police Department when they could not find him.

The police department launched a search. The Gila County Sheriff's Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter, Tonto Rim Search and Rescue and the Arizona Department of Corrections with its bloodhounds are all helping with that search, as are friends, family and neighbors.

Those searchers are focusing on the area within a mile of Travis' home.

Travis is about 3 feet tall and and weighs 60 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes, and was last seen wearing a red tank top with a football helmet on the front of it, blue shorts and sandals.

Police said there is no indication of foul play at this time.

Search Continues For Missing Payson Boy, 4
Police: Child Last Seen With Playmates Sunday Night

POSTED: 5:20 am MST August 16, 2010
UPDATED: 8:48 am MST August 16, 2010

PAYSON, Ariz. -- More than 300 people and a helicopter were searching for a 4-year-old Payson boy who went missing Sunday night.

Payson police identified the boy as Travis Mitchell. He was last seen around 5 p.m. Sunday. Police described him as 4 feet tall and weighing 60 pounds with brown hair. His family said he was wearing a red T-shirt with a football helmet printed on the front and "Training Camp" printed on the back; blue shorts with a red stripe; and blue and black NERF brand flip flops.

Ginger Mitchell, Travis' mother, said he was playing outside in a tree house with his 10-year-old brother and two family friends.

She said the children began to make their way to the house when she told them to keep playing outside until dinner. The children came back in because Travis had headed to the bathroom, though he never showed up at the house, she said. The children and mother began to search for Travis before calling Payson police.

Ginger Mitchell said the boy had never wandered off before, that he's very responsible and the family "trained" him to fear strangers and how to avoid getting lost. She said the boy can be "overly cautious."

The home is in a development near the Payson airport.

A helicopter from the Arizona Department of Public Safety was searching from the air, and a bloodhound was trying to track the boy's scent.
