I'm glad he was convicted, but this is a crime I can't comprehend.  I can understand much of the twisted psychology we see in this world, at least on a superficial level since I'm not a psychiatrist, but I do not understand wanting to molest a child.

Judge Grants New Trial To Man Convicted Of Sexually Abusing 8-Year-Old

Posted: 27 June 2007 01:03 PM

TAMPA - A federal judge today granted a new trial to a Palm Harbor man convicted in February of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl on an airplane.

U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday ruled he should not have admitted prejudicial evidence in the trial of Ronald Evan Mays, who was found guilty of abusive sexual contact with a child while on an airplane and obstruction of justice.  He faced a maximum sentence of 25 years in federal prison.

The obstruction of justice charge remains in effect, but Merryday, in a 10-page ruling, said he should not have allowed the prosecution to present evidence that Mays had deleted child pornography from his personal computer. Merryday said he should have required prosecution witnesses to merely state that Mays had deleted items from the computer without describing the evidence as child pornography.

“In short, admitting the fact of Mays’s deletion of child pornography profoundly adulterated the verdict” on the child sexual contact charge, Merryday wrote.

Defense attorney Frank Louderback said Merryday “did the right thing.” Louderback added, In retrospect, he decided that pretty much deprived Mays of a fair trial once he let that in.”

The girl was traveling unaccompanied on a Southwest Airlines flight from Tampa to Detroit on June 20, 2006.  Authorities alleged that during the flight, Mays repeatedly touched the girl in an inappropriate sexual manner.

Officials said the girl asked Mays whether he wanted to watch a Pink Panther DVD, and he moved to a seat closer to her, then began touching her thigh and rubbing his forearm across her chest. Mays repeatedly scratched his crotch while touching the girl’s legs and also draped a napkin with a map of the United States printed on it across his lap, then asked her to identify the states, authorities said.

Mays left the aircraft during a stop in Nashville, and the girl continued on to Detroit.

After Mays’ arrest on the sexual contact charges, his employer gave law enforcement consent to search the laptop computer he used for work, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Authorities found child pornography on it.
