Zahra Baker case shifts to investigation off of Dudley Shoals Road in Granite Falls

Investigators connected to the Zahra Baker case have resumed searching in Caldwell County, this time near an area where the Baker family once lived.

The Caldwell County Sheriffs Department, the Hickory Police department along with SBI and FBI agents are searching an area near Burns Road, off of Dudley Shoals Road in the Granite Falls area of Caldwell County. Roads are blocked off in the area and Dudley Shoals Baptist Church is being used as a staging area as investigators have been searching the area for most of the day.

Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones held an impromptu press conference on site of the investigation. You can access the entire press conference by clicking here.

Zahra Baker’s Stepmother Brought To New Search Site

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Zahra Baker’s stepmother, Elisa Baker, was taken out of jail and brought to the newest search site in the investigation into the disappearance of the 10-year-old girl, officers confirmed to Channel 9.

Police said on Monday morning that they are following up on a “promising lead” in the search for Zahra, who was reported missing on Oct. 9.

They began searching the area around Dudley Shoals Road in Caldwell County before daylight on Monday. The area is less than a mile from where Elisa Baker lived three years ago.

Elisa Baker has been in jail over the course of the investigation. She was charged with obstruction of justice on Oct. 12, after admitting to writing a phony ransom note. Last week, a judge raised her bond from $40,000 to $65,000.

While at the search site on Monday, Eyewitness News reporter Dave Faherty did not see Elisa Baker get out the SUV that she was brought to the area in.

Zahra Baker’s father, Adam Baker, is also in police custody. He was arrested early Monday morning and is facing several charges unrelated to his daughter’s disappearance.

Arrested on his outstanding warrants...bad checks,assault with a deadly weapon, not returning rental equipment and failure to appear...no new charges.

I think that was when he tried to run someone off the road with his car but I could be wrong.

Zahra Baker's father arrested, charges unrelated to disappearance

CHARLOTTE - The father of a missing Hickory girl has been arrested on charges that are unrelated to the disappearance of Zahra Baker.

Adam Baker was jailed today on charges including passing worthless checks and failure to appear in court. His bond was set at $7,000, with a court appearance on these charges slated for Nov. 18.

A police statement issued late this afternoon said Baker was arrested at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport around 3:15 this morning.

The statement said Baker was at the airport to pick up a family member.
Prior to his arrest, the statement said Baker voluntarily went to the Hickory Police Department and gave an interview.
 

Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins said officers delayed arresting Adam Baker because he was cooperating with the investigation into Zahra's disappearance.

Police have said they believe the ten-year-old is dead.
 

Investigators, now into their third week of looking for Zahra, today focused on a Caldwell County property that's near the former home of Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker.

Elisa Baker has been held at the Catawba County Jail since Oct. 10 on a range of charges, one of which stems from Zahra's reported disappearance on Oct. 9.

She admitted to writting a bogus ransom note that was found in a car that was set on fire outside the Baker's home.

A judge last week raised Elisa Baker's bond to $65,000.

This afternoon's police statement said the Australian consulate in Atlanta was notified of Adam Baker's arrest, at his request.
