search intensifies for Zahra as area becomes 'no-fly zone'

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - Search teams are combing a new site in Caldwell County on Wednesday for evidence related to the investigation of Zahra Baker, the missing 10-year-old girl.

Crews began searching at an area near Dudley Shoals Drive and Burns Road in Caldwell County at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday.  Officials said the area, which has been searched before, was one of the locations that Elisa Baker suggested search crews look.

The search on Wednesday has taken on a more serious tone with a no-fly zone set up -- meaning news helicopters are not allowed over the area. Also, earlier Wednesday search crews went in with dry suits, and then went in to search a body of water.

According to WBTV reporter Steve Ohnesorge, police are extremely tight-lipped about what is happening and they seem more intense as the search goes on. The media is being kept back further than ever -- and security for the search area is tighter than it ever has been.

Full Coverage: The Search for Zahra

Emergency services manager calls the FAA and asks for the flight restriction. It then goes out over the air as a NOTAM (notice to airman alert) and is available on the radars for flight controllers.

The restrictions in place for the search today is no crafts lower than 3,000 ft over a 3 mile radius.

LE doesn't enforce it, the FAA enforces it. If they fly in the restricted area, they are warned and if they ignore the warnings they can then call in air support to escort them down.

Timeline Of Events In Zahra Baker's Disappearance

HICKORY, N.C. -- The following is a timeline of events in the case of Zahra Baker, a missing 10-year-old Hickory girl.

• Oct. 9, approximately 2:30 a.m.: Zahra is reportedly last seen sleeping in her bedroom at her Hickory home.

• Oct. 9, approximately 2 p.m.: Zahra is reported missing by her father and stepmother.

• Morning of Oct. 10: Zahra's stepmother is arrested on several charges unrelated to the case. The charges include writing bad checks and failing to return property.

• Afternoon of Oct. 10: Police gather surveillance video from businesses near the home to put together a better timeline of events leading to Zahra’s disappearance. Dozens of police officers go door to door, handing out Zahra’s pictures.

Investigators also follow up on a call to the Hickory Fire Department from the Bakers’ home, where a small fire started on the front lawn.

• Morning of Oct. 11: Zahra's father appears on “Good Morning America” to plead with anyone with information about Zahra’s disappearance to come forward.

• Afternoon of Oct. 11: Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins holds a brief press conference to update the public on the 10-year-old's disappearance.

A search warrant is released that reveals more details about the case. According to the warrant, investigators who responded to the brush fire outside the Bakers’ home found a ransom note inside of a Chevrolet Tahoe that was parked outside.

• Afternoon of Oct. 12: Hickory police obtain a warrant for Zahra's stepmother after they said she admitted to writing and leaving the ransom note. Elisa is charged with felony obstruction of justice.

• Evening of Oct. 12: Police search a wooded area late into the night. The area is dozens of miles from where Zahra was reportedly last seen, down a dead-end dirt road off of Hartland Road, north of Morganton. They search around a wood chipper and in mulch piles.

• Morning of Oct. 13: Zahra's stepmother appears in court.

• Evening of Oct. 13: Investigators drain a pond and use a dog to sniff through piles of mulch and tree-trimming equipment.

About 150 people gather at a candlelight vigil at East Hickory Baptist Church.

• Oct. 14: Police launch a massive search at a remote property north of Morganton, but it comes up empty.

• Oct. 15: Zahra's father is with investigators at the home where Zahra reportedly went missing. K-9s were also seen at the home, searching in wood piles behind it. A plastic bag, a mattress and a box spring are taken out of the home by investigators.

• Oct. 16: Investigators narrow the timeline of when Zahra was last seen by someone other than a family member to Sept. 25. Police continue to ask the public to contact them with any information that could assist in the case.

• Oct. 17: K-9 teams continue to search areas identified by tips and interviews.

• Oct. 19: The 911 call made by Zahra’s father is released. Click here to listen to it.

• Morning of Oct. 20: Zahra’s stepmother appears in court for a bond hearing. A judge increases her bond from $40,000 to $65,000, citing “disturbing and unsettling” allegations surrounding the charge.

• Afternoon of Oct. 20: A team of investigators begins searching a landfill in Lenoir in connection with Zahra’s disappearance. In a news conference, Adkins would say only that searchers are looking for a “piece of evidence.” Click here to watch uncut video from the news conference.

• Oct. 22: Police end the landfill search and announce that they were searching for a mattress belonging to Zahra. Searchers tested several mattresses found in the landfill, but did not find Zahra's, police said.

• Oct. 25: Zahra's father is arrested on charges unrelated to her disappearance. Zahra's stepmother is taken out of jail and leads investigators to three locations in the search for the missing girl.

• Oct. 26: A mattress matching the description of the one police have been searching for is found. An employee at the Lenoir landfill found it while re-grading the area investigators searched. The mattress is being tested for DNA evidence.

• Oct. 27: Police announce that a prosthetic leg was found in a rural area off Christie Road in Caldwell County. Click here to watch uncut video of the announcement.

• Nov. 1: Police confirm the prosthetic leg found on Oct. 27 is Zahra's. They matched its serial number to the number on medical records that detectives collected from Zahra's native Australia.

• Nov. 3: Investigators find a bone in Caldwell County that they said may be related to the case. The bone was sent to the medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for further examination.

Monkey King - Isn't that article from WSOCTV.COM and posted here at Scared Monkeys (not authored) by Northern Rose?  The article is copyrighted and it's not supposed to be "rewritten".    Maybe just a notation below it or something if it gets posted over in the timeline thread.

Captured this shot from the helicopter video of Dudley Shoals search: http://www.wsoctv.com/video/25746628/index.html

I see an overpass right above the creek.

I surely hope they find her today.

Then we will be much closer to justice for her.

Isn't it strange that there is a Barretts Mountain AND a Indian Grave Road AND a Gunpowder Creek all in Queensland, AUS????

Eye opening observation by an Aussie over at WS.

Flight restriction area for the search:
FAA website has the flight restriction location as: "HICKORY, North Carolina near BARRETTS MOUNTAIN"

GRANITE FALLS --

Wednesday morning, investigators returned to an area along Dudley Shoals Road to search for evidence connected to the homicide of Zahra Clare Baker. This time, in addition to searching along the banks of Gunpowder Creek, they also looked in the water itself.

Several Caldwell County agencies gathered at the Hudson Fire and Rescue station at 7 a.m. Wednesday before heading out to Dudley Shoals Road near Burns Road to search for evidence, beginning at the Dudley Shoals bridge and spanning out in a half mile in each direction, said Tommy Courtner, Caldwell County EMS director.

“We’ve brought trained staff out to locate evidence with this case,” Courtner said. “The water team searched the banks and stream. We also brought mower devices to trim brush.”

The water team, dressed in personal flotation devices and helmets, waded through the water, which ranged from six inches to five feet in depth, searching with oars for evidence.

A BOB-CAT with a mower attached to the end rather than a bucket, was used to trim 18 inches of underbrush from the ground surrounding the higher-up banks.

“We have terrain navigation equipment and we’ve color coded, so we can see what we’ve covered,” Courtner said. “We’re doing five-feet of spacing, and three-feet of spacing on high-priority areas, going shoulder-to-shoulder.”

Thirty-nine people assisted with Wednesday’s search, with a safety officer overseeing the operation. Courtner said it was necessary, because the water is dark and rocky.

Hickory and SBI investigators were also searching in the woods along the banks. At one point they paused and brushed something off in the leaves, making a notation on a clipboard.

Courtner said searching this area of Dudley Shoals is difficult because, like the area that was searched along Christie Road a few miles away, it is an unofficial illegal dumpsite in the county.

“People have easy access to get in and out,” he said. “The area is bone-infested.”

The number of animal carcasses makes investigators’ search more difficult. However, searchers are on the lookout for anything that might be of interest in the investigation.

“We have a medical examiner from Chapel Hill on the scene,” Courtner said. “We’re looking for bags, boxes, bones, anything that can help us.”

Caldwell County Emergency Services agencies have participated in four days worth of searches — two days at Christie Road last week, a search at Indian Grave Road in the Patterson community north of Lenoir on Tuesday and the search off Dudley Shoals Road on Wednesday. Red Cross has provided assistance, including food, so they can remain at the sites longer.

Investigators searched this area on Oct. 25 in connection to Zahra’s disappearance, and have returned to it at least once since then.

Several other areas have been searched for Zahra or for evidence in connection with her disappearance, including a landfill in Caldwell County, several former rental properties or sites near where the Bakers once lived in Caldwell County, their Hickory home and Adam Baker’s employer, Real Tree Services in Morganton.

Zahra, 10, has been missing for more than a month. She was first reported missing by her father, Adam Baker, on Oct. 9. Three days later, the Amber Alert that was issued was cancelled and the case was changed to a homicide investigation. Someone outside of the family last saw Zahra on Sept. 25. Zahra’s stepmother, Elisa, 42, is currently in jail for writing a false ransom note in which she demanded $1 million. Because of that, Elisa has been indicted on one count of felony obstruction of justice. She has also been arrested on several other charges unrelated to Zahra’s disappearance. Adam was arrested as well, for several charges unrelated to the case. He has since bonded out of jail.

Courtner, a father himself to a 10- and 16-year-old, said the searches for the disappearance of the bubbly, smiling child have been difficult for himself and the others involved.

“We can’t go home and talk about it, so we talk to each other,” he said.

Bless all these searchers that have been working now over a month to help bring Zahra home.
