Sources: "Valuable Evidence" Found Was Human Remains

Posted: 11:06 am EST November 11, 2010Updated: 8:59 am EST November 12, 2010

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- Hickory police said Thursday that evidence located in Caldwell County Wednesday could provide "valuable" information in the search for missing 10-year-old, Zahra Baker.

Channel 9 Eyewitness News learned from sources that investigators found human remains on Wednesday when they searched in and near Gunpowder Creek off Dudley Shoals Road in Caldwell County.

Deputy Chief Clyde Deal wouldn't comment on what was found but said he would not send additional search teams to the area on Friday.

Zahra's father, Adam Baker, had no comment on the developments.

People visiting a makeshift memorial outside Zahra's home in Hickory said they believe closure is near.

"I just hate to see something like that happen to a 10-year-old," said Flossie Wilcox who visited the memorial with her two young children. "And, you know, I'd just like to see some closure on it," said Wilcox.

Zahra's biological mother, Emily Dietrich, visited the memorial early Thursday morning after arriving from her home in Australia. Witnesses said Dietrich spent about 45 minutes there with an Australian news crew.

The crew returned to the memorial late Thursday evening without Dietrich. Neighbors said crew members told them Dietrich was talking with officers at the Hickory Police Department, but police would not confirm that.

The remains found Wednesday will be analyzed at the State Bureau of Investigation’s lab.

Thank-you for all the updates and beautiful picture KCJackie  an angelic monkey  I leave my emotions out of all these cases because that is the only way that I can follow them, but I also have to say little Zahra and everything surrounding this case it is extremely hard not to have it on your mind and it just makes a person mentally and physically ill.

The video said that the police are protective of Emily and they have told her the DNA will be back on Tuesday.  Images of Emily with police.

Hello again monkeys.

Just a thought regarding this, reading that the police pulled AB and his lawyer in for "talks" for about an hour, could it have been to let him know that remains had been found and also to give him a subtle warning to stay clear of ED now that she is in the same town as him, if they are feeling protective of her they might have wanted to make that very clear to him and his lawyer.

I also think that ED will attend the vigil for Zahra, it's what any grieving parent would do isn't it?  I wonder if AB and his family will be there?

It takes a lot in all the cases I follow to make me ill (afterall, I work mostly with the dead)......but I have to say, this all just makes me want to vomit. If and when the whole truth emerges....I will still never understand WHY!

Nut... what is the nature of your work?  This case keeps me feeling sick and awful.  The video of her bio mom is heartbreaking to watch.

Nut follows up when bodies are found and tries to match them up to missing people.  It is very difficult work and NUT does it well.  To do this you need to stay emotionally unattached.  The fact this case gets to NUT just shows you how horrific it is.

Thank you.

I feel the same way Nut, I have not been able to stop asking myself WHY?  What on earth would ever drive someone to kill their own child let alone dismember them?  I seriously cannot understand it.  God Bless Zahra, she is now in loving arms.

Saying a prayer for Zahra's Mom. The photo of her hand over her mouth and an arm wrapped protectively around her tummy says it all. It brought me to tears. Every Mother's worse nightmare. May God bring her a peace that only he can give. Zahra is safe now in his arms, she now knows how much she is truly loved.

Can someone tell me when AB is supposed to appear in court for the threat and assault charges? I have a feeling they will nail him on that to keep him in place if he isn't locked up before then. This case makes me want to vomit.

I am jealous of those of you who can leave your emotions out of these cases.  I am afraid I wear my feelings on my sleeve and this case just breaks my heart in two.

I wonder if we will really hear something released from the police today?  This guy who is twittering, has not always been correct in what was going to happen.  I hope they will give us some kind of information today though.

I have no words really but I'm relieved to know they may have found our Zahra, and I sincerely pray that ALL who are responsible for whatever may have happened are punished and spend the rest of their days in a cell!

It's terrible to think how this child suffered! All these babies being discarded like trash is so incomprehensible to me! I just don't understand!
