I don't know about now, but about 20 years ago my boss had a house that ended up being condemned due to what the tenants had done to it. His accountant advised him that he could claim the rent that he was not able to collect while the house sat empty off on his taxes. Which he did for a couple of years until he was able to get it fixed up. Not sure if it is the same way now.

Tibro, NightOwl and all of our Australian monkeys, I added Freddo to this Celebration of Zahra's Life work I made for her birthday. Wink I think she'd like it.

Brandi the addition of Freddo is a lovely touch.  I agree Zahra would be thrilled to see it.

Thank you Brandi, I just love it and you are right, I thnk Zahra would have liked it as well.

love this Brandi!

Does anyone know if AB's father is still alive?  Also does anyone know if the suburb in Newcastle that Ma Baker lives in has ever been mentioned, I seem to remember one suburb had been mentioned weeks ago but I can't find it anywhere.  If by chance AB does get off, he will more then likely come home to live with his mother and I would really like to know how close to home that would be.

Have not seen any mention of AB's father.  And you know how difficult it is to trace people here in Australia.  I remember seeing a name for him somewhere some time ago and if I ever come across it again I will post here.

I would have expected Ma Baker to return to the Townsville area and the suburb/township there was Giru.  If AB does get off and returns to Australia to live and work, a sugar cane crusher would be a good alternative to mete out punishment.

That did not take very long to find :

Missing Zahra 'inspiring' in dual cancer battle

ANDY TOULSON  |  October 13th, 2010

BUBBLY North Queensland Zahra Baker grew up in the tiny sugarcane township of Giru (population 375), on the Haughton River, 56km southeast of Townsville.

Zahra was a happy, healthy five-year-old, living with her father Adam and grandparents Karen and Tony Baker, when she was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer, leading to loss of hearing in both ears, and the amputation of her lower left leg.

Two years later, she was diagnosed with secondary lung cancer, but 12 months after that, was told she had gone into remission.

One of the first things she did to celebrate was to join about 30 other North Queensland children and their companions on the adventure of a lifetime with Camp Quality in September 2008.

Soldiers from B Squadron, 3rd/4th Cavalry regiment from Townsville's Lavarack Army Barracks, gave up their weekend to escort the children to their camp near Innisfail, three hours north of Townsville, on board Army Bush Master Protected Mobility Vehicles (PMVs).

Zahra's grandmother Karen said at the time that Zahra's eyes lit up when she saw the soldiers waiting to take them to camp.

"Her eyes couldn't have been any bigger. She loves the whole army business," Ms Baker said.

"The picture tells the whole story, she handles everything with a smile. She has been on camp a couple of years ago, but she hadn't been well enough to go again until this year.

"The Camp Quality people are just wonderful."

Camp Quality North Queensland manager Mark McGregor, currently in India as a sports producer for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, said yesterday he was "devastated" to hear of Zahra's disappearance.

"She has been through two major cancer battles, the first one where she had to have a leg amputated, the second one where she battled lung cancer," Mr McGregor said.

"She was the life of any camp we went on - the kids loved her.

"Other kids were so inspired by her enthusiasm and her fight to live against all the odds. On a camp last year with the little kids, she was doing the ropes course on one leg, and I remember the kids saying to her: 'Zahra, how can you do that?'

"And she said 'Because I want to' - and that was just incredible.

"She was the most inspiring kid."

I feel real bad for the homeowner also. And the neighbors as well, just think if some of the neighbors want to sell their homes, I know that we wouldn't even bother to look in that neighborhood because of the horrific things that happened.

I'm sure there will be several weirdos looking to rent that home.  Well let me say this, we probably need to find out exactly what happenend in that home.  From what I have seen in pics of the home, all is repairable and doesn't need dozing.  BUT who would want to live in a home where a child could have passed under horrible circumstances and possibly other rooms in the home used to carry out such a crime.  I'm speaking of what I think happened to her and why a mattress, sizeable amounts of sheetrock and the drain pipes taken. A real house or terror IMO.  My imagination is in a terrible place right now.  You Monkeys have a good a day in spite of all the bad things going on.  Still so much to be thankful for!  Work calls!

We can love Zahra without that house
OUR VOICE

By The Record Editorial Staff
Published: November 23, 2010

We cannot expect Mark Coffey to maintain the house where Adam and Elisa Baker lived — and the shrine to Zahra Baker — forever.

Coffey, Adam Baker’s former employer, rented the house in northwest Hickory to Baker.

We still do not know for sure if Zahra ever lived there. The details of her last days and death have not been divulged.

Coffey said he would not remove the shrine to Zahra from the property. That was before hate messages began to pop up in the yard and the house was vandalized.

Hickory police investigators had damaged the interior of the house in removing evidence pertinent to Zahra’s disappearance.

The damage was necessary. Coffey understands that. He wants the case solved, as do we.

But even without the damage, the vandalism and the hate signs, we could not think that Coffey would never try to reclaim the property he paid for and rented to Zahra’s parents in good faith.

Realistically, all of us knew the shrine would be removed, in time.

The many toys and other items left in memory of Zahra have been given to Cops for Tots, a fitting gesture. It is gracious to share the gifts left in memory of a lovely little girl with children whose lives are devoid of things most of us take for granted.

Now, more signs are appearing criticizing Coffey’s decision to reclaim his property.

We must agree with him that the site has become potentially hazardous, a place not just for expressing love for Zahra or for trying to find healing, but for confrontation and vandalism.

The property is an investment. It was bought with real money. It is a metaphor to remind us that physically, we must move on, even though our hearts will always be affected by Zahra’s tragic fate.

It is apparent that many people think there should be a permanent memorial for Zahra.

We will not oppose that sentiment, but the house in northwest Hickory isn’t the place. It doesn’t feel right.

A happy place would be far better, not a spot also associated with tragedy — a house that may have been part of a horrible nightmare.

Let Mark Coffey remake the property. We can, and will, continue to exalt Zahra without that dim old house.

When there's an important event, Klaas will sometimes post a note with a link in busier threads to help keep us informed, since not all posters go to the different threads or they may not have been reading at Blink's site recently and they may otherwise miss the news.  Tracy Ocasio's case is in Scared Monkey's Missing, Exploited and True Crime Forum: http://scaredmonkeys.net/index.php?board=52.0

I agree with every word in this article. Zahra needs to have a memorial in a happy place, like a park or playground.

Also, Mr. Coffey probably wasn't the only one worried about the vandalism. The neighbors were probably scared that it would extend to their property. I think I would have been if I lived close by.

The other overlooked fact is that the property is owned by the Coffey Family Investments LLC not by Mr. Coffey personally. We have no idea how many family members are involved.

Thanks Tibro, I remember reading that now re the fathers name.  I have found a couple of articles that say that Ma Baker is living back in Newcastle, which fits with what I have found. I think they must have moved back maybe after the father retired.  Here is one link:

I had mentioned as a comment on one of their local newspapers (an article saying something like "we can remember Zahra without the home) that I think it would be great if a group of people could get together and fix that home.  I think it would be very  healing to the community, a great activity for kids - they can learn about being a supporting member of a community, and could help the home owner.  Let's face it - he has a huge task ahead of him if he's to do it alone.  I'm sure that some businesses would donate a few materials, certainly a lot of paint (painting is fun anyway), and some elbow grease.  If I were in that state, I certainly would go and  do some painting, scrubbing, nailing.  Everyone forgets that the guy actually  had HIS family threatened in that horrible note from Elisa, then was kind enough to keep his property open until people just started vandalizing it.  It would be a positive step for the neighborhood and something that would make GOOD out of bad, positive out of negative.  Just IMO.  It's like standing up and saying "you will NOT victimize the community!"

I rem. someone saying that Ma Baker cared for Zahara in Australia.
I would think a G'ma. would have wanted to be involved
front and center for Zahra's memorial.
Instead Adam and his Mom watched it via TV ?

Ma Baker in no way is concerned with Z's death, so the public would have no issue
with her,  or would they ?

On her own, I feel it was peculiar she did attend the vigil/memorial for
Z's b'day. Her face is not that memorable IMO.
