Documents give new details in Zahra Baker case


Documents released in court this afternoon shed more light on the case of Zahra Baker, a 10-year-old cancer survivor from Australia who investigators believe was killed and dismembered in the Hickory area.

Search warrant documents from the three-month old investigation were released from the Catawba County courthouse. The new documents show:

*Zahra Baker was killed on Sept. 24 and her body was disposed of the next day, Zahra’s stepmother, Elisa, told investigators, according to the court documents.

*Elisa Baker accused Zahra’s father, Adam, of dismembering the girl's limbs, according to the documents, which say the couple then disposed of the girl’s body in several locations, including Christie Road in Hudson and Dudley Shoals Road in Granite Falls.

*Police used cell phone records to try to corroborate statements made by Elisa Baker. The records show that Adam Baker’s cell phone wasn’t at the locations where Elisa Baker says the couple disposed of Zahra’s body, according to the court documents. But the cell phone records show Elisa Baker was at the places she described, the court documents say.

Tuesday’s release was the second significant disclosure of search warrants in the Baker case.

Similar search warrant documents released in November show an unnamed source reported to police that the girl may have been raped by two men and that they may have physically assaulted her. At least one of the men was acquainted with Zahra’s stepmother, Elisa. But both men denied the allegations and police haven’t charged them.

The previous documents also outlined statements from Elisa Baker describing how Zahra’s body was dismembered, placed in trash bags, and discarded in dumpsters and rural locations in Caldwell. They also detailed how Elisa Baker accompanied police to various locations where Zahra’s body was discarded.

No one has been charged in connection with her death.

Zahra was hearing-impaired and walked with the help of a prosthesis after losing her left leg to cancer. Her father Adam reported missing on Oct 9.

In 911 calls, theBakers suggested that Zahra might have been kidnapped while her father and stepmother were dealing with an early-morning fire.

Firefighters discovered a ransom note in a car. It was addressed to Adam’s boss and landlord, Mark Coffey, and said the abductors had his daughter. Investigators discovered that wasn’t true.

A few hours later, Adam Baker called police and said Zahra was gone. Elisa Baker was arrested on Oct. 10 on unrelated charges, then charged with obstruction of justice on Oct. 12 after investigators say she admitted writing a bogus ransom note.

More than a month after the investigation began, police said they had credible evidence that Zahra was dead, and had unearthed remains of a child they believe was Zahra.

According to motion filed later to reduce bond, Elisa Baker told her attorneys on Oct. 22 that she had information about the disappearance and death of Zahra Baker.

The case has drawn worldwide attention. Television crews from Australia, where Zahra was born, traveled to Hickory, nestled at the foot of the N.C. mountains, to cover the story.

Zahra moved to North Carolina about two years ago with her father from Australia after he met his soon-to-be wife, Elisa, online.

Zahra’s friends and relatives in Australia described her as an outgoing, happy girl despite the cancer, and said she didn’t want to come to the U.S

Search Warrants: Stepmother Says Zahra Died Sept. 24

HICKORY, N.C. -- Elisa Baker, Zahra Baker’s stepmother, told police the 10-year-old died on Sept. 24 and was dismembered the following day by her father, according to search warrants released Tuesday.

Zahra Baker was reported missing on Oct. 9. Her father, Adam Baker, told Hickory police that he last saw her sleeping in her bedroom at about 2:30 a.m. (Click here to listen to the 911 call.) An Amber Alert was issued and a massive search for Zahra ensued.

The prosthetic leg that Zahra wore after losing hers to bone cancer was found along Christie Road in Caldwell County on Oct. 26. Her remains were found on Nov. 10 in the Dudley Shoals area of Caldwell County.

Elisa Baker told Hickory police on Nov. 19 that Adam Baker dismembered Zahra’s body on Sept. 25 and disposed of the body parts in various locations, including the Christie Road and Dudley Shoals areas, the warrants say.

Investigators reviewed Adam Baker’s cell phone records and the phone’s GPS locator from Sept. 25, the warrants say. According to those records, Adam Baker was not in the areas where Zahra’s remains were found on the day that Elisa Baker said he was, the warrants say.

Elisa Baker’s cell phone records indicate that she was in those areas on that day, the warrants say.

Update: Elisa Baker's Court Appearance Postponed


Hickory, NC -- The stepmother of a Hickory girl found dismembered in Caldwell County was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, but the judge postponed the hearing..

Elisa Baker was charged in October with Obstruction of Justice and remains in Catawba County Detention Center with a $90,000 bond. Police said the charge stems from a fake ransom note discovered the day Zahra Baker was reported missing. Zahra, 10, used a prosthetic leg and hearing aids after surviving cancer.

A judge delayed Elisa Baker's hearing until March 7. There was no immediate explanation for the delay.

Tuesday's arraignment hearing was expected to include an indictment on the Obstruction of Justice charge and a possible bond reduction. Elisa Baker's attorneys argue she deserves a bond reduction for leading authorities to Zahra's remains. The State will argue the bond not be reduced, according to WBTV.

WRAL-TV reports a grand jury met Monday to discuss possible new charges against Elisa Baker. They will continue their discussion Tuesday.

Hickory Police gave the case to prosecutors in December. No one has been charged in Zahra's death.

Zahra's father, Adam Baker, denies any involvement in his daughter's death.

The latest detail was 1 of many in 200 pages of newly released search warrants obtained by The Associated Press Tuesday.

A user of the Instant Messaging Virtual Universe website told police that people with accounts belonging to Adam Baker, Elisa Baker and others talked about such a game roughly two weeks before Zahra was reported missing.

Calls to lawyers representing the Bakers were not immediately returned Tuesday.

No one has been charged in Zahra's death. Police have said her body was dismembered, but not how she died.

*Department of Social Service agencies conducted numerous investigations into abuse allegations by Elisa Baker going back as far as 1999, according to the documents. Investigators were seeking DSS records from eight counties around Hickory regarding Elisa Baker and her biological children.

*In July 2010, a report was made with the Caldwell County DSS and then transferred to the Catawba County DSS because allegations were made that Elisa Baker had been physically abusing Zahra Baker, the court documents say. According the allegations, Zahra had a black eye. Tuesday’s release was the second significant disclosure of search warrants in the Baker case.

Judge unseals all warrants in Baker case
DSS probes in three counties

A judge on Tuesday released 30 warrants related to the Zahra Baker murder investigation.

Judge Robert Ervin ordered the 207 pages of documents unsealed. Warrants unsealed today requested medical information regarding Elisa Baker, who is jailed on a charge of obstruction of justice.

Warrants also requested data on GPS information from Elisa and Adam Baker's cell phones for the day Elisa claimed her husband disposed of Zahra's body parts.

Zahra Baker, 10, was reported missing Oct. 9 by her parents. DNA tests on remains have confirmed the girl's death.

This story will be updated today as more information becomes available.

That's what I thought. Zarhra was reportedly seen a day after she was supposed to be murdered.
