Overreaching Food “Safety” Modernization Act Would Destroy Family Farmers

Quote
Yesterday, the Senate voted to take up consideration of S.510, the so-called Food Safety Modernization Act, which would grant the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) more control over our diets. The supposed intention behind the legislation is to protect consumers from food-borne illnesses. But will it really?

If passed, the misnamed Food Safety and Modernization Act would authorize the FDA to tell farmers how to grow their crops. Federal bureaucrats who likely know little to nothing about farming will set the guidelines on appropriate temperatures, what soil to use, how much water to use and what animals are allowed to be on certain fields.

A study by Senator Tom Coburn’s (R-OK) office states “on the whole this bill represents a weighty new regulatory structure on the food industry that will be particularly difficult for small producers and farms to comply with (with little evidence it will make food safer)”

Not only does this burden small farms, I doubt foreign farms will be forced to comply.

Is this an unfair advantage for foreign food crops?  How much will foreign food cost when hyperinflation hits?  Maybe the Obama admin plans to starve the fat off the nation?

Maybe this is the global colonialists goal, with the help of the Obama administration to destroy family farms?  Destroy existing agricultural jobs?  Redistribute the land to Obama's favorites?  Unions and illegal aliens?  With lots of Obamacash subsidies and redistributed money for pensions and healthcare?

Somehow, I don't see this being a benefit for any American.  Who does it benefit?  Foreign food producers?  Farmers in Mexico, Central/South America?

Putting farm families out on the street?  Allowing China to buy up all the cheap land to grow crops to feed their growing population?  Outside of Obama job killing regulation "it's for export, give us an expemption"?

Q. JBS will become an even bigger player in the North American animal protein industry with its pending acquisition of Pilgrim's Pride. Where do you see them going in 2010 and what will be the effect on the cattle business?

A. JBS will continue to strengthen its U.S. beef business by spending millions of dollars on plant upgrades and to its distribution system. It intends to start selling more value-added, including case-ready, products. It is developing ways to work more closely with cow-calf producers because it wants producers to be profitable and stay in business.

Few people know that JBS's founder, Jose Batista, is a prominent cattle owner in Brazil. The Batista family recognizes the vital importance of the production sector. One must also remember that packers are middle men who must convert cattle into beef as economically as possible to keep beef competitive with other proteins.

Didn't Obama send money to help the Brazilian state owned oil company?  Is cap and tax money to save the 'rain forest' going to benefit BILLION dollar meat companies in Brazil?

Why isn't Brazil's meat industry saving their own rain forest?

More food stamps, cheaper meat for American tables, and Americans get to pay to save the rain forest.  What a great deal.

Americans have to pay for meat profits and save the rain forest?

No jobs for Americans.

Just more Obama dollars and debt.

More global redistribution?  Creating markets for foreigners, and destroy family businesses in the US?

Bonds sold by JBS SA, the world’s largest beef producer, are posting the worst week since they were sold in July after Brazil’s national development bank penalized the company $300 million for delaying a U.S. share offering.

The yield on JBS’s 8.25 percent bonds due in 2018 climbed 33 basis points to 7.9 percent in the week through yesterday, compared with an increase of 25 basis points for Brazilian corporate debt tracked by JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s CEMBI index. Mexican corporate debt rose 25 basis points in that period, while borrowing costs for Russian companies added 23 points.

JBS agreed to pay the penalty to have more time to take its U.S. unit public without triggering a clause that allows the state bank to convert $2 billion of bonds into stock, increasing its stake in the company. Corporate borrowing costs rose to an almost two-month high this week as Brazilian bond investors shunned higher-yielding assets amid an accounting probe of Banco Panamericano SA.

“The delay of the IPO is going to have an impact,” Juan Cruz, a corporate bond analyst with Barclays Plc in New York, said in a telephone interview. “It has a real cost.”

How many more foreign globalists are waiting for job/family killing legislation and executive orders from Obama?
