You and me both, dawg.

I am thankful for another year of Joran`s misery. He hasn`t enjoyed one Christmas since.
This makes me happy! This year I hope he gets walnuts, oranges, pennies... and other
things that nobody wants, and maybe even a little Peruvian sausage in his chimney sock.

I take that back - nix the oranges. That boy doesn`t need any vitamin C.

Loving Natalee – Beth Holloway

Page 58:
Detective Jacobs asks us to come to the police station in Bubali in about an hour to give our official statements.

Page 59:  Jug, Jodi, and I arrive at Bubali at eight o’clock sharp …

Detective Jacobs is sitting behind the counter in a reclining swivel office chair.  As we move toward him, he leans back in his chair.  “We’re ready to give our statements,” we say, anxious to tell him the facts about Natalee’s disappearance we’ve gathered thus far, so that an investigation can get under way.

Page 60:  He pushes one hand and then the other down and across his belly, which is extended by his rearing back.  He says, “I’ll have to eat my frosted flakes first,” and then, running a hand across his jaw, adds, “and get a shave before I can deal with you.”  And with that he gets up from the chair, exits through the little swinging door, and disappears ….

A half hour passes.  Then an hour.  I wish there was an American law enforcement contact here to help us, someone to act as a liaison.    I get up from the plastic chair, go outside, and sit down in the gravel driveway ….

I’m outside about thirty minutes when another officer, police chief Jan van der Straten, comes out to the driveway and tells me bluntly and curtly to get up.  “You can’t sit in the gravel like this.  Come back inside.”

Inside, two more hours pass …

After almost three hours detective Jacobs comes back into the waiting area and tells me he doesn’t need me today.

Please remember Diane and Sage in your thoughts and prayers, for a speedy recovery!   an angelic monkey

Roswell rescue dog relapses, surgery planned

Dec 5, 2010 3:42pm

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) — A search and rescue dog raised in Roswell that has worked around the world has relapsed, and surgery is scheduled at a special animal cancer center in Colorado.

Sage's owner and handler, Diane Whetsel, says the 11-year-old Hagerman border collie will have surgery Monday.

Veterinarians who routinely monitor canines like Sage that worked in the aftermath of 9/11 recently detected a tumor lodged between her lung lobes.

Sage had surgery earlier this year for two other tumors, and Whetsel says the relapse took her and Sage's doctors by surprise.

Sage sifted through the rubble at the Pentagon after 9/11, worked in Aruba during the search for Natalie Holloway and the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. She was also deployed to Iraq in 2007 and 2008.

Heroic dog recovers from cancer
Updated: Friday, 05 Feb 2010, 5:33 PM MST

Web Producer: Devon Armijo
HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) - An award winning search and rescue dog from New Mexico will be honored several times this weekend.

Sage, a border collie who lives with her owner Diane Whetsel in Hagerman, has served on missions in Washington D.C. after September 11, in New Orleans after Katrina and with the military in Iraq.

She will be honored at a dog show in Hobbs.

Sage actually received the American Kennel Club’s Award for Canine Excellence in December at the AKC National Championships in Long Beach, California.

"The ace award for search and rescue is probably the most prestigious award a search and rescue dog could ever get," Whetsel said.

Last fall, Sage was diagnosed with cancer. Her treatment was funded by donations from fellow New Mexicans.

"We had donations from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, people really came together to get her the treatment she needed and enabled us to take her to the premiere cancer center," Whetsel said.

Doctors removed two forms of cancer from Sage’s chest.

Whetsel said the forms of cancer are not common in dogs, and she believes they may be related to the search and rescue work Sage has done.

“From 9-11 she sniffed a lot of toxins there, Katrina there were a lot of toxins there. And we also searched dump sites out side of Fallujah while we were in Iraq," Whetsel said.

The cancer was found early because all dogs that participated in 9-11 missions are checked every year by a joint mission from the University of Pennsylvania and the American Kennel Club.

Whetsel said the 9-11 mission was a double edged sword because it could have caused the cancer, but without the mission, the cancer may still be growing inside Sage.

The heroic pup is expected to make a full recovery.

“Everything is pretty much back to normal, she plays, she chases the Frisbee, you never know she's lost any part of her lung," Whetsel said.

SEARCH AND RESCUE
Sage – Border Collie owned by Diane Whetsel of Hagerman, NM

Sage is a 10 year old Border Collie who is owned, trained and loved by Diane Whetsel, a K-9 officer for the New Mexico Corrections Department. Diane began training Sage for disaster response when she was just 10 weeks old. She passed the FEMA Canine Readiness Evaluation at 18 months of age, working tirelessly ever since. Sage served at the Pentagon in the aftermath of 9/11, locating the remains of the terrorist who had flown the airliner into the Pentagon. The team was sent to Aruba in 2005 to search for the missing teen, Natalee Holloway and they were summoned to help in search and rescue efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In 2007 Sage and Diane travelled to Iraq and spent six months searching for missing soldiers. She quickly grew accustomed to working in the dangerous conditions offered by a war zone as she searched farm fields, homes and industrial areas. When Sage and Whetsel are not travelling to disaster areas and war zones, they give demonstrations and presentations to schools, clubs and animal rescue organizations in their community.

Sage was honored at the Hobbs New Mexico Kennel Club show on February 6, 2010.

The following dogs received Honorable Mention:
Bet – Border Collie owned by Vicki Roye of Coldwater, MS
Lionel – English Springer Spaniel owned by Liz Burne of Sharon, CT
Rebel – German Shepherd Dog owned by Brian Towsley of St. Louis, MO
Snickers – Beagle owned by Pam Medhurst of San Diego, CA
Vision – Australian Shepherd owned by Jennifer Morgan of Daphne, AL

The other night, we encountered friends who went to Aruba in October with 2 other couples.  We were not sitting near each other, so the few minutes we had to speak, I asked about the trip.   She said, 'It rains in Aruba!'  They happened to be there when the storm was passing through and she said that due to a lack of drainage on the island, there were puddles all over.  The other couples with them had trouble with drainage in their hotel rooms.  I'm surmising they had ground floor rooms...but can imagine how that would be if on a vacation...ugh.  They stayed at the Tamarijn, which is next to Divi and near the Alhambra (I think) Casino.

She said there were pockets of clearing, but they made the best of it, despite the weather.  She told of acquaintances of theirs who spoke of the calm waters, where one could walk out neck deep and countered with saying that when they were there, the current and waves were similar to the Jersey shore.  She said she has pictures, which I'm sure I'll never see.

Before our brief conversation ended, she mentioned another local couple who had gone to Aruba in November.  They, too, encountered daily rain.  I thought I remembered it said that there was a rainy season, so I looked it up and it is indeed from October to January.  As a matter of fact, in the last couple of Beach Cam pics I posted, you can see that it's raining, where the wooden decking is wet.  C'est la vie.

Hi Dani.  I wanted to acknowledge your post but to be honest, the discussion of Andrew Hodges book was so long ago I honestly don't remember that much about it.  Hodges is a bit of a kook if I remember correct.

Loving Natalee is an awesome book and gives you a good idea exactly what it was like for Natalee's family.

That's what I was thinking. He does sound a bit kooky. I'll probably read through it anyway just for kicks. It just sounds way too far fetched to me especially given the context of the medium & the language barriers.

I started reading Loving Natalee last night, will probably continue today. My husband is going to be so confused when he comes home and finds me engrossed in this case.

Hope everyone has a good morning!

An update on the Superior Offshore Int'l Class Action lawsuit:

Louis Schaefer, Jim Mermis, R. Joshua Koch and their co-defendents (including Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan Securities) have settled the case out of court.  There will be no trial.

The settlement agreement was evidently reached on October 14, 2010, though they've been working on it since June.  The final settlement has not yet been filed with the court.

Interesting timing considering Tim Miller's recent claims as it relates to Schaefer and a resuming of the ocean search on short notice.

STIPULATION TO LIFT STAY OF LITIGATION DUE TO SETTLEMENT
