Thanksgiving slayings: 2 teen girls shot dead
Pair was last seen in car with man, authorities in Ga. say
November 26, 2010

AUGUSTA, Ga.  — Two teenage girls were found shot dead in a wooded area on Thursday, police said.

The bodies of Angela Brooks and Nancy Cushman were discovered by a passer-by at about 2 a.m. on Thanksgiving. Authorities say Brooks, 19, was from Warrenville, S.C., and Cushman was 17 or 18 and also from the area.
Investigators in Augusta, Ga., said that Brooks and Cushman were last seen in a car with a man just after midnight, NBC station WYFF reported.

Cushman's 1999 Cadillac Escalade was found about a mile and a half away from where they were killed.

Detectives believe the killer drove the car from the crime scene to where it was found, WYFF said. Both teens had suffered at least one gunshot wound, according to WYFF.

Authorities in Richmond County, which shares the state line with South Carolina, are searching for 26-year-old Travis Lorenzo Berrian, but emphasized he is not considered a suspect.

The Augusta Chronicle reported that Berrian was in 2008 sentenced to five years in prison and six years probation for aggravated assault, second-degree criminal damage to property and criminal use of an article with an altered identification mark.

AUGUSTA, GA (WIS) - Deputies in Georgia are investigating the murders of two South Carolina girls found shot to death in Augusta.

Richmond County deputies said Nancy Cushman, 18, of Beech Island, and Angela Brooks, 19, of Warrenville, were killed sometime late Wednesday. A passerby found the women's bodies in some woods off of Laney Walker Boulevard and Twiggs Street around 2 am Thursday.

Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said Cushman and Brooks were each shot at least once, but withheld the number and locations of the gunshot wounds.

The women were last seen around 12:30 am Thursday on Telfair Street with an unknown male, according to Captain Scott Peebles with the sheriff's department.

WJBF in Augusta reported that investigators want to 26-year-old Travis Lorenzo Berrian. They say Berrian is not considered a suspect, but that he may know something about the case, WJBF reported.

Peebles said Cushman's 1999 Cadillac Escalade was found abandoned at the intersection 2nd and Telfair streets shortly after the bodies were discovered. Police believe the suspect or suspects drove the SUV there from the murder scene.

Autopsies will be performed Friday morning at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's crime lab. So far, investigators do not have a suspect or motive.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at 706-821-1080. A reward is being offered, and callers may remain anonymous.

No new leads in holiday homicides
November 26, 2010

Authorities continued to search this morning for a man wanted for questioning in the Thanksgiving Day shooting deaths of two Aiken County teens.

Richmond County Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Peebles said investigaors had no new information on Travis Lorenzo Berrian, 26.

Peebles said Thursday that Berrian was not a suspect and wanted only for information.

Authorities identified the victims as Angela Brooks, 19, of the 300 block of Breezehill Road in Warrenville; and Nancy Cushman, 18, of the 100 block of Jones Circle in Warrenville. However, Richmond County Sheriff's Capt. Scott Peebles said Cushman was 17 and from Beech Island.

Brooks and Cushman were shot and killed early Thursday, according to sheriff's office investigators.

Their bodies were found on the corner of Twiggs Street and Laney-Walker Boulevard about 2:30 a.m. by a passerby walking through the wooded area, according to a news release.

Cushman and Brooks were last seen about 12:30 a.m. on East Boundary Street with an unknown black man.

They were shot at least once, but Peebles said police were withholding the location and number of wounds.

Only on 12: Teen's family asking for justice after holiday homicides

News 12 at 11 o'clock -- Sunday, November 28, 2010

WARRENVILLE, S.C. -- An unforgettable holiday weekend for two teenage girls family has come to a close, but without a suspect's arrest, they say there still isn't closure.

Nancy Cushman, 17, and Angela Brooks, 19, were found murdered in a wooded area near Downtown Augusta on Thanksgiving.

On Thanksgiving day, News 12 sat down with a family member of Nancy Cushman about their family's loss.

Sunday News 12 spoke with Angela's family, who is asking for justice in the holiday homicides.

"We get together every holiday...right here," Angela's cousin Carolina Conklin said.

Right here at Angela Brooks' home, but normally they get to see Angela in person. All they get to see this year is her picture.

"The mood was sad," Conklin said about spending Thanksgiving with family after the murders. "It wasn't joyful."

"When someone says 'How was Thanksgiving?' We say it was just that, Thanksgiving," another cousin, Yolanda Frazier said.

An unhappy holiday for the 19-year-olds family. They say Angela was nothing, but happy.

"Angela was the kind of person where every time you see her she just had a big smile on her face," Conklin said.

"Like she said, her smile. She's always a joker," Frazier said. "She's the only one who would call me by my nickname and that's all I keep hearing."

But now they want to hear who killed their cousin.

Investigators want to talk to Travis Lorenzo Berrian, a person of interest they believe might help them close this case.

"Just think of if it was your loved one, wouldn't you want someone brought to justice," Frazier asked. "She was a daughter, she was a sister and she was loved and it's not right."

They say it wasn't right to kill her friend Nancy Cushman either who had been friends with Angela for the past few months.

"Just can't imagine why anyone would want to do this to her or the other girl. They were so young," Conklin said.

Youth that's now been taken away.

"It's not even explainable," Frazier said. "You see it in a lot of different places, but when it hits home that's when it hits hard and so it's been a real crazy holiday for us."

Sunday both Angela's and Nancy's families came together to grieve. They say they are both supporting each other during this difficult ordeal.

Investigators say they are withholding the autopsy results for the two homicides until a suspect is arrested.

Investigators say they're closely following leads, which they believe will help solve this crime.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of Travis Berrian or information about this case please call the Richmond County Sheriff's office.

Teens were killed execution style
Suspects sought in Thanksgiving Day deaths of 2 girls
November 29, 2010

Two Aiken teenagers found dead on Thanksgiving morning had been led into a wooded area in downtown Augusta by at least two men and shot -- "execution style" -- in the backs of their heads.
At a news conference Monday, Richmond County Sheriff's Capt. Scott Peebles released more disturbing details in the deaths of Angela Brooks, 19, of Warrenville, and Nancy Cushman, 17, of Beech Island. The teens' bodies were found by a passerby near a wooded path at the corner of Twiggs Street and Laney-Walker Boulevard early Thursday.

Initially listed as a person of interest in the case, Peebles said Travis Lorenzo Berrian, 26, is a suspect in the killings. Authorities are also searching for a second man who appears in surveillance video released by investigators.

"At some point after being led there (the victims) were placed side-by-side and shot execution style at that location," Peebles said.

"They were at least kneeling, possibly lying on the ground."

Investigators worked through the weekend and into Monday on the girls' case, and on the unrelated slaying of Samuel Carroll Jr. on Sunday night. The three deaths brought this year's homicide total to 38, the highest since 1993, according to Augusta Chronicle records. That year, there were 42 homicides.

A man wanted for Carroll's killing -- 23-year-old Desmond Marquette Anthony -- turned himself in to deputies Monday afternoon and was charged with murder.

During Monday's press conference about the Thanksgiving Day killings, Peebles said one of the girls, Cushman, had a recent "on-again, off-again" relationship with Berrian and that the girls had gone to visit him the night of the shootings

"They had had some significant issues leading up to Thanksgiving morning that I cannot get into," Peebles said.

"We have speculation, right now, and we have ideas on motives. We have many theories floating at this point."

A video released at the press conference shows two men -- one of them identified as Berrian -- exiting the back doors of Cushman's 1999 Cadillac Escalade at the Smart Grocery at 3221 Wrightsboro Road at 12:20 a.m.

Peebles said officers do not know who was driving the SUV and could not say for sure whether the victims were in the vehicle.

Cushman's SUV was found abandoned at Second and Telfair streets shortly after the bodies were found. Investigators think the Escalade was driven from the crime scene to where it was abandoned.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to the arrest of anyone responsible for the killings. Anyone with information can contact the sheriff's office at (706) 821-1080 and can remain anonymous.

Police: Men in video not suspects
Sheriff's office says men in video made public Monday questioned, released
November 30, 2010

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office released new information this afternoon in the slayings of two North Augusta teen girls.
Sheriff's Capt. Scott Peebles said in a statement that investigators have identified and questioned two men seen on surveillance video provided Monday in reference to the murder investigation of Angela Brooks and Nancy Cushman.

Originally, Peebles said, investigators believed that Travis Berrian, a suspect in the case, was one of the men in the video.  However, it has now been determined that Berrian is not one of the men in the video.

Peebles said the identities of the men are not being released at this time, but both men were questioned and released this morning, and are not considered suspects at this time.

Travis Berrian, however, is still a suspect in this case.  Investigators are still asking that anyone with information about the case call 706-821-1080.

There remains a $1,000 reward for information which leads to an arrest in the case, and callers may remain anonymous.  Anyone with information concerning Travis Berrian’s whereabouts is also asked to call and provide that information.

UPDATED: Men In Surveillance Video Questioned, Released In Double Homicide Investigation
November 30, 2010

Richmond County investigators are searching for a killer. Investigators say the bodies of two teenage girls were found in a field near the intersection of Laney Walker Boulevard and Twiggs Street around 2:00 a.m. Thursday morning. Now, they say they want to talk to 26-year-old Travis Lorenzo Berrian. They say Berrian is not considered a suspect, but that he may know something about the case. WJBF News Channel 6's Brett Buffington has more on the investigation.

Captain Scott Peebles tells WJBF News Channel 6 that, thanks to help from the media and public, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) has identified and questioned two men seen on surveillance video provided Monday in reference to the murder investigation of Angela Brooks and Nancy Cushman.

Originally, investigators believed that Travis Berrian, a suspect in the case, was one of the men in the video. However, it has now been determined that Berrian is not one of the men in the video.

The identities of the men are not being released, at this time, but both men were questioned and released Tuesday morning, and are not considered suspects, at this time.

Travis Berrian, however, is still a suspect in this case. RCSO investigators are still asking that anyone with information about the case call 706-821-1080. There remains a $1,000 reward for information which leads to an arrest in the case, and callers may remain anonymous. Anyone with information concerning Travis Berrian’s whereabouts is also asked to call and provide that information.

***4:44 p.m. Update November 29***

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) is releasing more detail regarding the Thanksgiving morning murders of Angela Brooks and Nancy Cushman:

Evidence from the scene and autopsies suggest that, sometime between midnight and 2 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, Brooks and Cushman were led to the vacant lot on Twiggs Street where their bodies were found around 2 a.m.

The two girls were shot execution style, side by side, at that location. Investigators believe there were at least two suspects at the scene, at the time the girls were murdered. It is believed the suspects then drove the Cushman's vehicle from the scene to the location on 2nd Street, where it was abandoned.

While arrest warrants do not yet exist, 26-year-old Travis Lorenzo Berrian is now a suspect in the case. Berrian had an intimate relationship with Cushman.

Surveillance video from Smart Grocery (3221 Wrightsboro Road), a convenience store at Wrightsboro Road and Fox Trace Drive, shows two men exit the rear seats of the Cushman’s vehicle, at about 12:20 a.m., on the morning of the murders. One of those men has been identified as Travis Berrian. It is unknown who the second man is, and RCSO is asking for help from the public in identifying him.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $1,000 cash reward for information which leads to the arrest of the person/s responsible for the murders. Anyone with information is asked to call the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at 706-821-1080. Callers may remain anonymous.

Shawn Johnson, friend of the two victims: "It's kinda hard...I mean, you know a person just left your house 30 minutes ago. Somebody comes to your house in the middle of the night and tells you that they're dead. It's just a real shock."

Fighting back tears, Shawn Johnson says what happened to his friend, Angela Brooks, isn't right. Brooks and another teenager girl, Nancy Cushman, were found dead in a field near Laney Walker Boulevard, early Thursday morning. Investigators say both girls had been shot.

The two were last seen alive around midnight, Thursday morning, near East Boundary, at Johnson's home. He says everyone around there knew the two teens.

Shawn Johnson, friend of the two victims: "I mean, it wasn't like didn't knowbody know her. You could tell by the walk who it was when you see her coming down the street."

Johnson says, when the two girls left his house, there was a third person in the car with them, someone johnson says he'd never seen before.

Investigators say they belive whoever left the bodies behind, likely drove off in Brooks' 1999 Cadillac Escalade. Investigators later found the car at the intersection of 2nd Street and Telfair Street.

Yolanda Brown lives across from the field where the bodies were found. She says it's horrible that the girls lost their lives on Thanksgiving.

Yolanda Brown, lives across from crime scene: "It makes me think the neighborhood isn't safe, no more. It can happen right at your back door."

Johnson: "I mean, they were just getting their life started. It was just like they were snuffed out."

If you know anything about that Cadillac Escalade, or the whereabouts of Travis Berrian, please call the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
