Baker, 42, is facing $4.75 million in fines and 140 years in jail if she is convicted of all charges and receives the maximum punishment.

Lia Bantavani with the U.S. Department of Justice would not comment as to how agencies gathered evidence to charge Baker or if they expected any additional charges against Baker or anyone else, saying she could only comment on what was already public record.

Baker’s first court appearance on the charges is May 25 at 9:50 a.m. She is currently incarcerated in the Catawba County jail. Her attorney, Scott Reilly, said he did not expect to represent her on the federal charges.

“I rarely go into federal court,” he said. “I expect to have someone else be appointed for her from the western district.”

The district attorney prosecuting the Zahra Baker case is spearheading state legislation that would penalize people who dismember a body to hide a crime.

Current statutes prohibit concealing a death. Anyone who tries to conceal a person's death by failing to notify authorities or by secretly disposing of the body is guilty of a felony, according to the statute. And anyone who helps another person conceal a death is guilty of a misdemeanor.

Gaither's recommendations would make it a felony to dismember or destroy human remains in an attempt to conceal evidence of a death when that person knows or has reason to believe the deceased did not die of natural causes.

His recommendations also would make it illegal for people to disturb human remains by vandalizing or desecrating a body. That offense would be a misdemeanor, according to his proposal.

Some of Zahra's remains have yet to be recovered, including her skull, according to her autopsy.

US federal authorities have charged the stepmother of Zahra Baker with running a drug house at the address where she allegedly murdered the 10-year-old.

Elisa Baker, 42, also known as Elise Young, is charged with murdering and dismembering Zahra after she was reported missing from her home in Hickory, North Carolina, on October 9 last year.

Zahra, a cancer sufferer who had her left leg amputated and was deaf, was dead for 15 days before she was reported missing.

The latest charges were filed by federal rather than North Carolina authorities, who said between 2006 and October 10, 2010, Ms Baker used various addresses around Hickory for the purpose of distributing controlled substances in association with other unnamed parties.

Ms Baker is accused of selling Oxycodone, Alprazolam and Hydrocodone, all controlled pain-killer medicines.

Ms Baker allegedly ran a prescription drug racket from at least three residences where her husband Adam Baker and Zahra lived, but neither federal nor North Carolina authorities have suggested Ms Baker was selling Zahra’s drugs.

Elisa Baker spent Thursday morning in Charlotte’s federal courthouse in a hearing about her May 18 drug indictment.

 Baker has been charged with killing and dismembering her stepdaughter Zahra Baker.

 On Thursday, the accused murderer walked into the federal courtroom wearing a pink Catawba County jail jumpsuit. The sleeves of a white thermal shirt with tiny hearts printed on it were visible.

 Baker’s ankles were shackled and she wore fuzzy white socks with red plastic sandals.

 She appeared intimidated by her surroundings. She kept her eyes down and stayed quiet.

The only word she used during the hearing was a half-whispered “yes.” It was Baker’s sole response when she was periodically asked if she understood what she was being told.

She is charged with second-degree murder, bigamy, two counts of obtaining property by false pretense, two counts of identity theft, obstruction of justice and 16 other charges.

Elisa Baker’s federal drug charges:

 Conspiring with others to distribute and possess with intent to distribute Oxycodone, Hydrocodone and Alprazolam in Caldwell and Catawba counties from 2006 until 2010. Maximum penalty: 20 years in prison a $1 million fine or both.

The stepmother of murdered Australian schoolgirl Zahra Baker has appeared in a North Carolina court to face federal drug trafficking charges.

Judge Keesler ordered Baker be arraigned on the drug charges on June 2.

Zahra's father, Adam Baker, who married Baker after meeting her on the internet, has not been charged with Zahra's death or disappearance.

He also has not been charged in the federal drug case.

Adam Baker has been indicted by a grand jury on an unrelated matter, obtaining property by false pretenses and identity theft.

 CHARLOTTE -- Elisa Baker, the woman charged with killing her 10-year-old disabled stepdaughter, pleaded not guilty Thursday to unrelated drug charges in federal court.

U.S. Magistrate David Kessler ordered that the 42-year-old be held without bond. No trial date has been set.

Prosecutors say Baker distributed and planned to distribute drugs including oxycodone and hydrocodone between 2006 and 2010. They also say she conspired with others to distribute drugs.

Elisa Baker appeared in U.S. District Court briefly Thursday morning to plead not guilty to seven federal drug charges.

Baker is the stepmother to Zahra Baker, the Australian girl who was found dismembered last fall. Baker has been charged with second-degree murder in Zahra’s death.

Baker, 42, did not speak during her court appearance. Her court-appointed attorney, Rahwa Gebre-Egziabher, waived the formal reading of the charges and requested a speedy trial.

The aging old hags who support you went cray with glee when you posted . The grieving father who is now claiming that Elisa bluffed him for years can flex his muscles of Facebook . melisb, I'm pretty sure I know who she conspired with LOL. I just want to see their names published. If she conspired with others, they should know who these people are, and shouldn't they be arrested also?
Don't know about the pill problem, but it seems that every state has a problem to some extent.
