Hickory Golf Tournament To Benefit Zahra Playground

HICKORY, N.C. -- Participants in the Greater Hickory Golf Classic tournament will help raise money for the Zahra Baker playground that is expected to open this summer.

The Hickory Daily Record reported that “Birdies for Zahra” will help development of the Zahra Baker All-Children’s Playground being built at Hickory’s Kiwanis Park.

CALDWELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - The father and step-mother of Zahra Baker are both scheduled to be in court this morning in Caldwell County.

None of the charges Adam or Elisa face today are directly related with the 10-year-old's death and dismemberment last fall.

Bakers' Caldwell County court hearings pushed back

Adam and Elisa Baker were scheduled to appear in Caldwell County court Monday on several charges unrelated to the death of Adam’s 10-year-old daughter, Zahra Baker. Neither case was heard Monday.

The charges Adam, 33, faced included simple worthless checks, communicating threats and failure to return rental property. Elisa, 43, was due in court on charges of worthless checks, communicating threats, failure to return rental property and traffic citations.

Although Adam has waited in attorney Shell Pearce’s office during past Caldwell County court dates, he didn’t this time, Pearce said, adding that Adam waited at home this time.

Adam has already paid the money owed on the worthless checks and is hoping to clear those charges, Pearce said.

Adam was given a new court date of Aug. 4.

Elisa did not appear in Caldwell County court Monday because she is currently under a federal detainer in the Catawba County jail. She has been charged with seven federal drug charges and has pleaded not guilty.

“You have to get a writ to bring them to another county,” said Scott Reilly, Elisa’s attorney for her state charges. “A writ has to be granted by the U.S. attorney.”

The measure was sought by the prosecutor in the case of Zahra Baker, whose remains were discovered strewn across two western counties. Her stepmother has been charged with second-degree murder. Court documents say Elisa Baker told investigators Zahra was dismembered after dying.

The bill would create three different felonies - the most serious crime punishable by a maximum of 13 years in prison.

CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Officials confirm the Chief Assistant District Attorney for District 25 -- who is a key figure in the Zahra Baker case -- was charged with a DWI Tuesday morning at a North Carolina beach.

Eric Bellas, who serves the region of Burke, Catawba and Caldwell counties, was arrested just before 2 a.m. by the Sunset Beach Police Department and taken to the Brunswick County jail, authorities say.

Officials tell WBTV that Bellas was riding a bicycle when he was charged with DWI. He was not involved in an accident with a vehicle. No one else was injured.

SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (AP) — The lead prosecutor in the Zahra Baker murder case is on administrative leave following his arrest for driving while impaired on the North Carolina coast.

Chief Legal Assistant Donald Farr of the Catawba County District Attorney's office said Tuesday lead prosecutor Eric Bellas was relieved of his duties.

Checking on to see what is new with the case against the step mom. The dad has still not been charged with anything? Wth is with that? Sometimes we forget a father is just as responsible as a mother, even if they don't care full time for the child. He needs to be at the very least be charged with child endangerment, at the very least. I would like to see perhaps 2nd degree murder. kidnapping would be nice as well. No charges filed even in Australia?

Zahra your face still burns in my heart. I will never forget you. I pray  you have found the peace and love I bet you longed for in life. . May God bless you and keep you safe forever.

C'mon now!  It says he didn't hurt anyone and no accident so let him get home!!  At least he didn't get behind the wheel!  It's a bike for goodness sakes!

Tracygirl, ITA.  I continue to hope and pray for justice for Zahra.  It's hard to believe Adam has only been held responsible for the bad checks. And the evil step-mother is has been charged with drug charges.  From what I've gathered, Zahra wasn't receiving an education (pulled out of school), she lacked medical care especially needed for her conditions, add on the abuse of forced walking on a prosthesis seen by a witness and this is just off the top of my head.  Zahra lived a life of hell down here on Earth the last of her life, and her life was taken from her.
 . Where was Adam? There's no way he didn't know any of this.  Why wouldn't he get help for his daughter if he didn't have money?  Because he was afraid his new life would be upended, since he would call attention to his visa problems?   Because he might have to go back to Aus?   Zahra suffered for two other very selfish, evil people.  We can't bring Zahra back, but what we can do is help bring justice and punish those responsible.  ::justice2NJ:: ::justice2NJ:: 

This is only the tip of what I feel about this.  I'm still so horrified and saddened at how little Zahra lived toward the end of her life.  I look at her photos and I think about her.  I wonder how in the world someone could be so cruel?  And I don't have an answer for that.  I think perhaps Adam and even his evil wife haven't been charged with the crimes they really should be is because it's difficult for LE to figure out who did which crime/who played which part in things.  I can't imagine how hard it must be for some of the men and women that took part in the searches for Zahra, that had to sift and find part of a little, innocent girl that had been tossed and strewn.    
Rest in peace Zahar.  They can't hurt you anymore.  I'm praying for justice.

Prosecutor taken off Zahra Baker case

The murder case against the stepmother of Australian schoolgirl Zahra Baker will not be affected by the lead prosecutor's drink drive charge and subsequent removal from the case, District Attorney Jay Gaither said.
