Loggers find items related to Zahra Baker case

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- Loggers working in Caldwell County Tuesday found a briefcase containing items related to the Zahra Baker case.

The briefcase contained what appeared to be a blanket or clothing related to the 10-year-old who was reported missing in October 2010.

The briefcase was found off Christie Road, which is where investigators found Zahra's prosthetic leg on Oct. 26.

The girl was reported missing on Oct. 9. Search warrants indicate Elisa Baker, Zahra's stepmother, told Hickory police that Zahra died on Sept. 24, but there are no details as to how or why she died.

The same warrant says Baker told police that Adam Baker, Zahra's father, dismembered the girl's body and hid parts of it in several locations around Caldwell County.

Elisa Baker is behind bars on charges unrelated to Zahra's death. So far, no one has been charged in connection with the death.

NewsChannel 36 reporter Rad Berky is in Caldwell County. He'll have more details on this developing story tonight on NewsChannel 36 at 6 p.m.

Elisa Baker indicted on bigamy charges

Elisa Baker, whose stepdaughter’s death and dismemberment have captivated an audience worldwide, was indicted Tuesday on a bigamy charge, accused of marrying Adam Baker in Australia before divorcing her previous husband.

Elisa and Adam Baker were married in Australia in July 2008. Adam Baker’s daughter, Zahra, was reported missing in October. The 10-year-old girl’s body was dismembered and her remains were discarded.

Court documents obtained by the ******* show Elisa and her former husband of 10 years, Aaron Young, separated in May 2008 and divorced on August 21, 2009 – more than a year after Elisa and Adam Baker’s marriage.

Elisa Baker and Young have remained in frequent contact, police say, and photos of Zahra with Young appear the Facebook pages for both Elisa Baker and Young.

Elisa Baker told Adam Baker that Young was her brother, police say.

Bigamy is a low level punishment. For someone like Elisa Baker, who has no felony convictions, she faces probation if convicted.

Police, meanwhile, are continuing their investigation into Zahra Baker’s death. The 10-year-old girl has survived cancer, lost a leg and had a hearing impairment.

The investigation has focused largely on what role, if any, Elisa Baker played in Zahra’s death, according to search warrants unsealed in recent weeks.

Elisa Baker told authorities that Zahra died on Sept. 24 – two weeks before the girl was reported missing. She accused Adam Baker of dismembering his daughter, and said she and Adam Baker dumped Zahra’s body parts in various locations, according to court documents.

Family members have told the ******* that Zahra had been sick before dying and that Elisa and Adam Baker didn’t take her the hospital. They said the Bakers might have feared authorities because Adam Baker was in the country illegally and because DSS had investigated Elisa Baker.

Both Elisa and Adam Baker have denied any wrongdoing.

Elisa Baker has been in jail since October when she was charged with obstruction of justice. Police say she admitted writing a phony ransom note to throw off the investigation into Zahra’s disappearance.

What does the woman have to do to be a felon?? Didn't Skanky get convicted for a felony for check charges? I know they weren't her checks. She was dumb enough to sign her own name. But Elisa has a record a mile long! Charge her with murder, how 'bout it? Here! I think we all need one of these.

I have perhaps a very dumb question, has it ever been absolutely verified when Zhara was actually died/murdered?  I realize there have been dates thrown out there but is it the true for a fact time from the Coronor/autopsy or just what evil Eliza gave?

I've followed this from the beginning and I don't recall any exact time line.  The only thing that may be was where the mattress was found and the grid matching approximate date at the landfill?

Fanny Mae, if it makes you feel better (because it sure made me feel better) there's a section in the warrants that talk about Adam in the suspect role, not the grieving parent role.  I can't recall which page, but I was glad to see language finally pointing to his involvement.

Thanks STARWYNN. I've read the warrants a couple of times and I didn't glean much about suspicions of Adam in them. Maybe I am missing something. The biggest thing I remember was the checking of his phone, and his phone not being where the evidence was found. I'll go back through them again.
[/quote]

I believe it was in the second set of warrants released; I'd have to go back through and search through them.  I referenced it in a post on here, too.

OK, really giving them more credit than I *feel* like giving, MAYYYbe they're trying to get this done, have it stick, because it's easily proved.  Mayyyybe if they get SOME verifiable criminal charges on her record, it will some how help to portray her as manipulative, officially, and manipulative enough to have done the murder.  I'd like to think, and might be stretching it to do so, that this could some how make punishments more harsh and conviction more certain in the Zahra case.

I hope.

Because they're pissing me off, bless 'em.  lol

Logging crew finds briefcase near where Zahra's prosthesis was found

HUDSON --
Logging crews working on Christie Road in Caldwell County Tuesday morning recovered a briefcase that may be related to the Zahra Baker investigation.

The crew was working on the opposite side of the road from where a prosthesis and a bone, both later identified as Zahra Baker's, were recovered in late October.

Because of the proximity to where the evidence to the Baker case was recovered and where the briefcase was found, the logging crew called the Hickory Police Department, thinking it may be related to the case.

The briefcase contained an old, moldy blanket, according to Capt. Thurman Whisnant with the Hickory Police Department. Investigators said they don't know yet if it is connected to Zahra's death.

They are preparing to send it to the SBI lab for further analysis.

Zahra, 10 and a cancer survivor who lost part of her left leg and her hearing to the disease, was first reported missing on Oct. 9. Although she was initially believed to be missing, police changed it to a homicide investigation on Oct. 12. Her stepmother, Elisa Baker, is in jail for writing the false ransom note that was found the day Zahra was reported missing. Elisa has been indicted on one count of felony obstruction of justice for the note, which she confessed to writing.

Much of the evidence in the case has been recovered on Christie Road and Dudley Shoals Road, both in Caldwell County.

Staff is at the scene at Christie Road, gathering additional information. Come back to www.hickoryrecord.com for more information.

Loggers Find Items In Area Where Zahra’s Prosthetic Leg Was Discovered

Posted: 2:28 pm EST January 18, 2011

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- Loggers working along Christie Road in Caldwell County found a bag with a blanket inside of it on Tuesday afternoon.

The prosthetic leg of 10-year-old Zahra Baker was discovered in the same area in late October. The prosthesis was found directly across the street from the area where the bag was found.

It’s unclear whether the bag and blanket are related to the investigation into Zahra’s disappearance and death.

The girl’s remains were found on Nov. 10 in the Dudley Shoals area. No one has been charged in her death.

Let's hope they can fingerprint the briefcase or the bag, and that the bag is like the white loews bags or another bag from within the house, and that the blanket or cloth inside of it has Zahra's blood.  Maybe that could help pin the insect (Adam) down to actually being part of the dispersal of the body, which can help prove that he was part of it and knew about the death finally.  Even though we ALL knew he knew, "beyond a reasonable doubt" helps.
