Adam Baker was arrested Tuesday on two felony charges.

Hickory police charged Baker with one count each of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretense.

The charges come from Baker getting services from Duke Energy in the name of James Starbuck at his home on 21st Avenue, NW, in Hickory, said Maj. Clyde Deal with the Hickory Police Department.

Adam and his family moved to the house in mid-July from Caldwell County.

“It was about the time they moved into the house,” said Capt. Thurman Whisnant with the Hickory Police Department. “It was for activation of services at the house.”

Baker was placed in jail under a $10,000 secured bond. However, by 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, he had already bonded out of jail.

Whisnant could not speculate whether Baker would be facing additional charges.

Zahra Baker's father goes to jail and will stay there



The father of 10-year-old Zahra Baker, whose disappearance and death captured hearts worldwide, made his first court appearance this morning on felony charges of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretences. He faces up to 30 months in prison if found guilty.

Immigration officials have also placed a detainer on Baker, meaning even if he posts the $10,000 bond, he will remain in custody. Baker has been living in the United States illegally, according to Catawba County jail officials.

Adam Baker stood silently in a green jail uniform as the judge read the charges. Hickory Attorney Mark Killian was appointed as his defense lawyer.   ::snipping2::

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - In the same week he had hoped to get an answer on having his passport returned so he could fly back to his home country of Australia, the father of 10-year-old Zahra Baker was hit with new felony charges -- and authorities have issued a "detainer" against the man, keeping him in the U.S.

According to the Hickory Police Department, Adam Baker was arrested and charged with one count of identity theft and one count of obtaining property by false pretense on Tuesday afternoon.

Baker appeared in court Wednesday morning for the felony charges and he was given a court-appointed attorney. A probable cause hearing was set for May 4 and Baker was held on a $10,000 bond.

In addition, immigration officials have now issued a detainer against Baker which prohibits him from leaving the country even if he posts bond.

Once all of Baker's legal issues are resolved, he will be deported said an official with the Hickory Police Department.

Businesses raising money for playground in memory of Zahra Baker

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - Three grocery stores in Hickory are joining with the Kiwanis Club to sell support cards for the Zahra Baker All-Children's playground.

Baker is the 10-year-old girl who was reported missing by her father, Adam, last October. Several weeks later, her dismembered body was found in Caldwell County. Zahra's stepmother, Elisa, has since been indicted on second-degree murder charges in connection with Zahra's death. Read related story about charges now filed against Adam Baker. 

Three Fresh Air Galaxy grocery stores are now selling support cards for $1, $5 and $10 to raise funds to building the playground in memory of Zahra.

HICKORY -- Hickory police say Adam Baker is in the United States illegally. They say ICE has a detainer on Baker, so when his legal issues are resolved, he will be deported. Police also say the new charges of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretense against Zahra Baker's father were expedited once they heard that Baker wanted to go back to Australia.
