Police: Grandmother throws child to her death at mall
November 30, 2010

FILE - This handout photo provided by Fairfax County, Va., Police Department shows Carmela Dela Rosa. A toddler has died after police say she was thrown off a shopping mall walkway in Virginia by a woman believed to be her grandmother. Carmela Dela Rosa of Fairfax was arrested and charged with aggravated malicious wounding, the charge will be amended to murder now that the girl, Angelyn Ogdoc, has died.

A walkway, top, is seen at the Tysons Corner Center shopping mall in McLean, Va. Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010. Police said the 2 1/2-year-old girl fell Monday night from a walkway that links the mall to a parking garage at Tysons Corner Center.

McLEAN, Va.  — A Virginia grandmother threw her 2˝-year-old granddaughter several stories to her death from a walkway at a shopping mall after a family outing, police said Tuesday.

Carmela Dela Rosa, 50, of Fairfax was arrested and charged Tuesday with murder, said prosecutor Ian Rodway, the chief deputy Commonwealth's attorney.

The child, Angelyn Ogdoc, died in a hospital after plunging to the pavement Monday night. She fell from a walkway linking the mall's third floor to the parking garage's sixth floor at Tysons Corner Center in Fairfax, a Washington suburb in Virginia.

Investigators believe Dela Rosa threw the child over a railing but do not yet know why, Fairfax County police spokeswoman Tawny Wright said. Wright said the toddler and Dela Rosa were leaving the mall with family at the time.

Dela Rosa was being held without bond, and a preliminary hearing in the case was set for Jan. 4, Rodway said. A public defender will be assigned to the case.

One of Dela Rosa's neighbors, Russell Jackson, described them as "a happy family" and said Dela Rosa lived with her husband and a son, but that their daughter and granddaughter were frequently at the home.

Jackson, who lives in a row house directly next door to the family, said the grandparents would often take care of the young girl.

"She was a sweet, happy baby," he said, adding that Dela Rosa and her grandchild could often be seen in the window of the home, waving to passers-by.

No one answered the door Tuesday at Angelyn's two-story home in Falls Church, about seven miles from the home of the grandparents.

Grandmother charged with murder after girl thrown
November 30, 2010

TYSONS CORNER, Va. - A 50-year-old woman accused of throwing her granddaughter to her death off a parking garage walkway has been charged with murder.

Carmela Dela Rosa allegedly threw two-and-a-half-year-old Angelyn Ogdoc off a sixth floor outdoor walkway at Tysons Corner Center around 7:15 p.m. Monday, Fairfax County Police spokesperson Tawny Wright tells WTOP.

Dela Rosa was arraigned Tuesday morning at Fairfax County Circuit Court. She is due back there on Jan. 4.

She is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

Dela Rosa, of Fairfax, was walking with other family members Monday when she picked up and threw the girl off the walkway in a matter of seconds, Wright says.

Emergency responders took Ogdoc to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she later died. Police were notified of her death around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Dela Rosa was originally charged with aggravated malicious wounding, but the charges were upgraded to murder following the girl's death.

There is a security camera on the walkway. There is no word on whether the camera captured the incident.

The walkway connects Parking Garage E with the movie theaters and a food court. There is a railing just higher than waist-level.

Police have not said what prompted the Dela Rosa to hurt her granddaughter.

Dela Rosa's neighbors say she often took care of her granddaughter, and was recently rushed to the hospital because she was sick.

"She's like a normal person, you wouldn't think something like that would happen," next-door neighbor Russell Jackson tells WTOP.

"I've seen her picture, but I'm still saying 'They've got the wrong house.'"

Grandmother was carrying toddler before dropping her from mall walkway
December 1, 2010

McLEAN, Va. — Prosecutors scanned surveillance video Wednesday for clues in the death of a toddler apparently thrown from a mall walkway.

The 2-year-old girl's grandmother, Carmela Dela Rosa, 50, of Fairfax, Va., has been charged with murder in connection with the death at Tysons Corner mall here and is being held without bond.

On Monday night, Dela Rosa was walking behind the rest of the family on the way out of the mall across a pedestrian bridge four stories high to a parking garage, carrying granddaughter Angelyn Ogdoc in her arms, a spokesman for the state Commonwealth Attorney's Office said. No known argument led up to the incident; there was no warning.

Authorities say previously that interviews with witnesses led them to the conclusion that the fall was no accident. Angelyn was transported to the hospital in critical condition and died Tuesday morning.

The grandmother has no previous criminal record, but prosecutors say they've been told she had some history of mental illness.

"No, she's not crazy. She'd never do that. She loved that baby," Russell Jackson, who lives next door to Dela Rosa, said Tuesday.

Fairfax Commonwealth Attorney Raymond Morrogh could raise the charge to first degree murder if his investigators determine premeditation. He is expected to try the case himself. A trial date could be set for March.

TYSONS CORNER, Va. - A Fairfax County woman known to dote on her granddaughter is being held without bond on charges she tossed the 2 1/2-year-old to her death at Tysons Corner Center.

Carmela Dela Rosa, 50, allegedly threw Angelyn Ogdoc off an outdoor parking garage walkway around 7:15 p.m. Monday.

Fairfax County Police spokesperson Tawny Wright tells WTOP was walking with other family members Monday when she picked up and threw the girl off the walkway in a matter of seconds.

Police have offered no explanation yet as to why the grandmother who often babysat Ogdoc during the day would throw the baby over the rail. Dela Rosa's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Dawn Butorac, said Wednesday that it is very early in the investigation, but they are exploring Dela Rosa's mental health.

Her client has a history of mental illness, Butorac says.

The walkway where the crime occurred connects Parking Garage E with the movie theaters and a food court. There is a security camera on the walkway. There is no word on whether the camera captured the incident.

Emergency responders took Ogdoc to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she later died. Police were notified of her death around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Dela Rosa initially faced a charge of aggravated malicious wounding. Police charged her with murder after the child died.

Dela Rosa is due back in court on Jan. 4. Neighbors say she often took care of her granddaughter. They describe her as a loving caregiver.

She was recently rushed to the hospital because she was sick.

"She's like a normal person, you wouldn't think something like that would happen," next-door neighbor Russell Jackson tells WTOP.

"I've seen her picture, but I'm still saying 'They've got the wrong house.'"

In one online tribute, a friend recalls how ecstatic Angelyn's birth made parents Kathlyn and James Ogdoc, and the looks on their faces when she was baptized.

The Catholic Diocese of Arlington says the family is making arrangements for a private funeral.

Carmela dela Rosa was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Angelyn Ogdoc in November 2010 at the Tysons Corner shopping mall outside Washington, D.C.

At her trial in Fairfax, Va., in October, dela Rosa's lawyer failed to convince the jury that she was insane at the time of the incident.

In a videotaped confession, she told police she killed Angelyn to get back at her son-in-law for getting her daughter pregnant out of wedlock, the Associated Press reports.

FAIRFAX, Va. -- A Virginia grandmother has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for murdering her 2-year-old granddaughter by tossing her off a sixth-level walkway at a busy shopping mall.

A jury recommended the 35-year sentence. At Friday's hearing, Judge Bruce White had the option of reducing the sentence but left it, calling her actions "almost beyond comprehension."

35 years for Fairfax County woman in granddaughter’s killing

A Fairfax County woman who was convicted of first-degree murder for throwing her 2-year-old granddaughter to her death off a mall walkway was sentenced to 35 years in prison Friday.

The longest sentence allowable, it was what a Fairfax County jury recommended in October when it found Carmela dela Rosa, 50, guilty in the killing of Angelyn Ogdoc.
Dela Rosa and her family were on an outing at Tysons Corner Center in November 2010 when dela Rosa snatched up Angelyn, darted to a pedestrian bridge railing and then dropped the girl 44 feet to her death.

The killing shocked the area and spawned headlines across the country. The murder was caught by a mall surveillance camera and dela Rosa later admitted to detectives she had plotted the killing while her family enjoyed their time at the mall.

Mom: Grandmother threw daughter from walkway

Quote
She was face to face with her own mother, 50-year-old Carmela De La Rosa, the alleged murder of her toddler daughter, 2-year-old Angelyn Ogdoc. With tears streaming down her face, Ogdoc couldn't bring herself to say that the defendant was her own mother.

According to the first police officer to reach Carmela Dela Rosa after the family called 911, the defendant said, "'Yes, I did it. I threw the baby off.'"

This poor young woman.  I hope she and her husband can heal.

Quote
The commonwealth's attorney said, "When things did not go her way, she cuts off the problem, and in this case, she threw the problem off the bridge."

The prosecution's rebuttal witness, psychologist Dr. Stanton Samenow, testified, "There is no evidence she wasn't connected to reality. My opinion is she was able to appreciate the consequences of her actions when she threw the granchild over the railing.... she knew it was wrong. She knew right from wrong."

Samenow diagnosed Dela Rosa with borderline personality disorder, which filled her with anger, and resentment toward her family members.

He said, "She simply did not get along with members of her family. She was a woman who wanted things on her terms, and when things did not go her way, she was angry. Life was not going the way she wanted it to go."
