(CNN) -- After finding her mother dead inside their home, police issued an Amber Alert for a 12-year-old Virginia girl who they believe has been kidnapped.

Brittany Mae Smith was last seen "several days ago," according to a Roanoke County statement issued Monday. Her abductor is thought to be Jeffrey Scott Easley, a 265-pound white male described by police as a friend of the mother's.

"Police have said that the young lady is in extreme danger," said Teresa Hamilton Hall, public information director for Roanoke County.

Roanoke County police went to a Salem residence about 9:30 a.m. Monday after being contacted by concerned co-workers of Tina Smith, the girl's mother. They found the 41-year-old woman's body inside and promptly launched a homicide investigation.

Police soon got information that Brittany Smith's whereabouts were unknown, leading them to issue the statewide alert.

Virginia's Amber Alert website noted early Monday evening that Easley's car, a 2000 red Chevrolet SUV, has been found. But authorities are still looking for Tina Smith's vehicle, a silver 2005 Dodge Neon sedan with Virginia license plates.

Easley is 5 feet, 11 inches tall with brown hair and hazel eyes, the Amber Alert says. Brittany Smith is 5 feet tall, weighs 100 pounds, and has straight brown hair and brown eyes.

Hall said authorities don't have a specific search area, as they are uncertain which direction Easley might be heading or how far he might have gotten. They have asked anyone with more information to call 911 or Roanoke County police at 540-777-8641.

Crime scene tape surrounds the home of 41-year-old Tina Smith as police investigate her death as a possible homicide.

"It was like my heart had been cut out," said Smith's next door neighbor Richard Burbage. "This was too close."

Burbage says a knock on the door Sunday is when he first knew something could be wrong. "Lady introduced herself as Tina's best friend from South Boston and that she was worried about her."

He says he and his wife contacted Smith through Facebook and called, but never heard from their neighbor. On Monday, they called police to report her missing.

"They told me officers were already on their way."

We've learned Smith worked at the Richfield Retirement Community as a registered nurse for four years, according to the company president.

Police say when she didn't show up for work, co-workers asked police to do a well-being check.

That's when they found her body.

Burbage says she was a nice neighbor and can't believe something like this happened. "She was a lively person, always fun-loving. That I know of, she didn't have any enemies."

While at the scene, police learned Smith's 12-year-old daughter, Brittany, was missing.

Investigators say she and her mother were last seen this past Friday.

They believe she is in extreme danger and was likely taken by 32-year-old Jeffrey Scott Easley.

They say he was a friend of Tina Smith.

Police have issued an Amber Alert for Brittany.

A Roanoke County schools spokesman confirms she is a 7th grade student at Glenvar Middle School.

Meanwhile, family, friends and neighbors are holding out hope that she's found safe and sound. "That would be terrible news to find out she's been harmed," said Burbage who speaks very highly of the mother and daughter. "She came over and raked leaves for me and she's a lot like her mom...just wants to be loved and love other people."

We've also learned Brittany's father works for the South Boston Police Department and he is cooperating with detectives investigating the abduction.

A police spokeswoman says an autopsy on Tina Smith is expected to be performed tomorrow.

From State Police: Please be advised that Roanoke County has located the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer VA/XPR-4366.

 The search is now focusing on the missing 2005 Silver Dodge VA XKF-2365, the make has been identified as a Neon.

Roanoke County Police say the Amber Alert investigation also involves a possible homicide of the missing child's mother.

When Roanoke County officers arrived to the home on Fort Lewis Circle Monday morning around 9:30 a.m., they found a woman's body inside. Investigators identified the woman at 41-year-old Tina Smith, the mother of Brittany Smith.

Investigators now say Brittany was last seen several days ago, and that the suspected abductor of Brittany, Jeffrey Easley, was a friend of Tina's.

Police say Easley may be driving a 2000 red Chevrolet SUV with Virginia license plate XPR-4366.

Officers also say that Tina's car is missing, a silver 2005 Dodge four-door sedan with Virginia license plate XKF-2365.

melisb - I think Brittany and Jeff were in a relationship.  That is likely why Brittany's mom was killed.

Yep, they are friends!  So Mama must have found out about this relationship and threatened him and this is what happened.  Betrayed (IMO) by her own daughter and a so called friend!
