Illinois man dies in crash; wife leaves car, vanishes
December 7, 2010

An Illinois woman walked away from a car crash that killed her husband, authorities believe, but they have found no trace of her other than footprints in the snow leading to a road.

A search was in its third day Tuesday for Tanya Shannon, 40, of Ransom, Illinois, according to the LaSalle County, Illinois, Sheriff's Office.

Shannon was last seen along with her husband Dale Shannon, 41, at a Christmas party Saturday night in Streator, about 17 miles west of Ransom, relatives told CNN affiliate WGN and the Chicago Tribune.

"They were dancing together, really cutting up a rug," Dale Shannon's sister Donna Baker, who was at the party, told the Tribune. She said the couple -- who has been married 20 years and has four daughters ranging in age from 4 to 15 -- left the party arm in arm.

Her brother was sober, she told the newspaper, and was driving his wife's car.

About 1:45 a.m. Sunday, a deputy on patrol in a rural area of Brookfield Township found a one-car traffic accident, the sheriff's office said in a statement. "The deputy found a male occupant of the vehicle in the driver's seat deceased," the statement said. "Evidence at the scene indicated that a second person was also in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Further investigation revealed that the second person was possibly the wife of the deceased driver" -- Dale Shannon.

A relative told the Tribune the car had apparently spun out, and its back end struck a pole, reportedly breaking Dale Shannon's back.

Footprints were found leading from the car to a nearby road, WGN and the Tribune reported. But there, Tanya Shannon's trail ends.

"We see Mrs. Shannon getting to the road," Tom Templeton, LaSalle County Sheriff, told WGN. "Then from there, we have no idea."

Police have not ruled out the possibility that Tanya Shannon was picked up by someone. But "if she was able to walk and able to move, how come she hasn't contacted any of her family?" Templeton told the station.

Tanya Shannon was last seen wearing a red dress -- described by the Tribune as a ball gown -- and a gray fleece hooded jacket, police said. The dress should have made her easy to spot in the rural, snowy landscape.

"We were told from the family she was an extremely loving mother," Templeton told the Tribune. "For her to (just leave with no warning) would be incredibly out of character. To be out in the elements as they were that night, dressed only as she was, it's very doubtful that you can survive terribly long."

The crash site was remote, Templeton told the newspaper. A nuclear power plant lies to the north, but the area is surrounded by farmland.

"It's crazy," Baker told WGN. "We're holding on to every ounce of hope we have, just to hope for (a) safe return ... It's been like a nightmare you can't make up from. If anybody has anything, seen anything, please, please contact us, because these four girls need something."

Search and rescue operations have so far involved dogs and aircraft from the Illinois State Police, along with more than 50 searchers, according to WGN and the sheriff's office. The search was set to resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday, the sheriff's office said.

Tanya Shannon is described as being 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 125 pounds, with shoulder-length strawberry-blond hair and green eyes, according to the sheriff's statement. She also wears glasses.

It's very mysterious what might have happened to Tanya," Baker told the Tribune. "We checked the area hospitals and nothing, so we don't know if someone picked her up and took her somewhere. We just don't know."

Templeton said he's never seen a case like this in his 12 years as sheriff. "Anything that's even remotely close has been gone over several times," he told the newspaper.

Anyone with information regarding Tanya Shannon's whereabouts is asked to contact the LaSalle County Sheriff's Office.

Ransom is about 70 miles northeast of Peoria

Woman disappears from car crash that kills husband
LaSalle County search fails to discover her whereabouts
December 6, 2010

A woman apparently walked away from a car crash in LaSalle County that killed her husband early Sunday, then vanished amid the snowy fields.

About 50 people, two dogs and a fixed-wing plane spent Monday combing rural Brookfield Township for Tanya Shannon, a mother of four from Ransom, a town of about 400 people nearly 50 miles southwest of Joliet. Shannon, 40, was last seen wearing a floor-length red ball gown and a gray fleece hooded jacket as she and her husband left a holiday party.

Police ended their search late Monday with no sign of Shannon and plan to resume and expand the search Tuesday morning, LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton said.

Authorities hope Shannon is alive, while also acknowledging the harsh winter elements. LaSalle County was blanketed with nearly 7 inches over the weekend, and temperatures dipped into the teens by Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

"We were told from the family she was an extremely loving mother," Templeton said. "For her to (just leave with no warning) would be incredibly out of character. To be out in the elements as they were that night, dressed only as she was, it's very doubtful that you can survive terribly long."
At 1:45 a.m. Sunday, police on patrol found Shannon's husband, Dale Shannon, 41, dead behind the wheel in a one-vehicle crash on the Grand Ridge Mazon Blacktop between East 26th and East 27th roads. A relative said police told the family the car had spun out. The rear of the car hit a pole, reportedly breaking Dale Shannon's back.

Authorities found footprints in the snow leading from the car to a nearby road that likely belonged to Tanya Shannon. Police say she is white, 5 feet 2 inches tall and 125 pounds, with shoulder-length strawberry blond hair and green eyes. She wears glasses.

Police did not find any winter gear, including a coat, inside the vehicle, Templeton said. The crash site is remote, he added. A nuclear power plant is nearby to the north, but the remaining land is flat farmland.

"It's very mysterious what might have happened to Tanya," said Dale Shannon's sister, Donna Baker. "We checked the area hospitals and nothing, so we don't know if someone picked her up and took her somewhere. We just don't know."

Templeton said authorities are stumped.

"Anything that's even remotely close has been gone over several times," Templeton said, adding that he's never seen a case like this in his 12 years as sheriff. "It's a mystery."

Police aren't ruling out that Tanya Shannon might have been picked up.

"We can't say she wasn't," Templeton said. "If she was, then the question is, then why aren't you contacting your family?"

The Shannons, who were married 20 years, were on their way home from a holiday party in Streator, about 17 miles west of Ransom, Baker said.

"They were dancing together, really cutting up a rug," said Baker, who was at the party. "Both left the party arm in arm."

Baker said the car was Tanya Shannon's, but her husband was driving. She said her brother was sober and often took precautions when he and his wife went out.

Dale Shannon was a diesel mechanic, and his wife is a part-time waitress, Baker said.

Meanwhile, a neighbor has started a collection for Shannon's four daughters, ages 4 to 15. David Kerley, who lives across the street from the Shannons, is asking people to donate money, clothing and Christmas gifts at Jerry's Tap, 119 N. Lincoln St. The local tavern also serves as a grocery, where residents buy everything from homemade pizza to fruit and candy, manager Maranda Trainor said.

"I just know that with Christmas and everything coming up, it's a hard time on their family right now," said Kerley, who has two young children who play with the Shannon girls.

I have a sinking feeling that Tanya walked along the road for a while and ... when there were no passing vehicles she diverted in an attempt to find some assistance.

I could be wrong.

LaSalle County authorities resumed their search this morning for the woman who apparently walked away from a car crash in a remote rural area that killed her husband early Sunday but said they weren't sure how long they would continue.
"We have to make a decision," said Sheriff Tom Templeton. "We can't keep these people out there going over the same ground over and over again."

About 50 people, two dogs and a fixed-wing plane spent Monday combing rural Brookfield Township for Tanya Shannon, a mother of four from Ransom, a town of about 400 people nearly 50 miles southwest of Joliet. More volunteers went out  this morning

Shannon, 40, was last seen wearing a floor-length red ball gown and a gray fleece hooded jacket as she and her husband left a holiday party.

Authorities hope Shannon is alive, while also acknowledging the harsh winter elements. LaSalle County was blanketed with nearly 7 inches over the weekend, and wind chill temperatures in the area before sunrise were 3 below, according to the National Weather Service.

"We were told from the family she was an extremely loving mother," Templeton said Monday. "For her to (just leave with no warning) would be incredibly out of character. To be out in the elements as they were that night, dressed only as she was, it's very doubtful that you can survive terribly long."

A relative said police told the family the car had spun out. The rear of the car hit a pole, reportedly breaking Dale Shannon's back.

The car struck a telephone pole and veered about 20 feet off the road. Templeton said Tanya Shannon apparently walked away from the crash site in slipper, up to the side of the road.

"The footprints end there," he said this morning.

The couple was on their way home from a holiday party. Tanya wore high heels to the party, and police found them in front passenger side of the car. Police also found a black Skecher slipper with fur lining in one of the footprints leading to the road, Templeton said.

Earlier, police said they  did not find any winter gear, including a coat, inside the vehicle.

The crash site was described as remote. A nuclear power plant is nearby to the north, but the remaining land is flat farmland.

Tanya is described as white, 5 feet 2 inches tall and 125 pounds, with shoulder-length strawberry blond hair and green eyes. She wears glasses.

"It's very mysterious what might have happened to Tanya," said Dale Shannon's sister, Donna Baker. "We checked the area hospitals and nothing, so we don't know if someone picked her up and took her somewhere. We just don't know."

It looks like someone's fixed it, Tol.  No worries.  Every now and then we have duplicates, but that can be easily remedied.  It was good to see you open a thread, you did fine.       There are so many missing

I think abduction is definitely a possibility, given what we know about the weather, her clothing, the time and etc.

This is really sad.  She just has to have been picked up by someone but WHY don't they contact someone.  She could have amnesia but still with it in the news you would think they would contact someone UNLESS they don't have a phone?

If her husband broke his back and died in the accident I have to believe she was also injured, perhaps a concussion. She may not be able to remember details of her life but if she was picked up why wouldn't they take her to a hospital. Does not sound good and my heart goes out to her 4 children.

Tanya Shannon, Mom of Four Kids, Disappears After Holiday Party
Authorities Have Found Shannon's Deceased Husband and Their Crashed Car
December 7, 2010

Footprints in a snowbank are the only clues for officers searching for a Chicago woman who vanished after walking away from a late night car crash that left her husband dead in the driver's seat.
A massive manhunt is underway for Tanya Shannon, a 40-year-old mother of four, who has been missing since early Sunday morning when authorities from the LaSalle County Sheriff's office located her crashed car on the side of a rural road.

In the driver's seat of the car was Shannon's dead husband, 41-year-old Dale Shannon, according to Sheriff Tom Templeton.

"She and her husband were at a company Christmas party Saturday night. They left the party heading to a family's house and on the way had a traffic-related accident in which Mr. Shannon was killed," Templeton told ABC News. "From the evidence that we've seen, Shannon was able to get out of the vehicle and go up to the roadway."

"From there we have no idea where she went," he said.

Templeton said that while alcohol was available at the party it does appear that the car crash was an accident. Further toxicology reports are being ordered, he said.

Footprints from a "slipper-like" shoe were found leading away from the car and up to the road, said Templeton, and one of the slippers was also located by the first responders.

Inside the car, a pair of high-heeled shoes were also found.

"Her family tells us that she was a loving mother and very committed to her children," said Templeton. "Not being in contact with her family is completely out of character for her."

Shannon's children range in age from 3 to 15.

"We have to consider that someone might have picked her up," he said. "She just seems to have disappeared."

The search resumed today for the third day, Templeton said, and about 50 people have joined the rescue effort.

Missing Mom Tanya Shannon Vanished After Car Crash

Weather reports from Dec. 5, the last night Shannon was seen, show that the temperature plunged as low as 4 degrees. There were also "several inches" of snow on the ground where the car was recovered, according to Templeton.

"We're keeping our minds open and options open," he said. "But if in fact she is out in the elements I think we have to realistically think of this as a recovery effort rather than a rescue effort."

Shannon's sister-in-law, Donna Baker, also told The Chicago Tribune that the couple had been married 20 years and had been spotting dancing the night away at the holiday party, which Baker had also attended.

"It's very mysterious what might have happened to Tanya," Baker said. "We checked the area hospitals and nothing, so we don't know if someone picked her up and took her somewhere. We just don't know."

Templeton said that he would "love for Shannon to walk in the door somewhere and tell us what happened."

"As long as she was alive to give her explanation and we could give her back to her children for Christmas, that's just fine," he said.

Shannon is 5'2" tall and weighs 125 pounds, has shoulder length strawberry blond hair and green eyes. She was last seen wearing a red dress and a gray fleece hooded jacket. She also wears glasses.

Anyone who might know where Shannon is should call police at 815-433-2161.

Thank you, Klaas.   His FB says he installed FB for Blackberry........so they must have a cell phone.  Also his profile states he likes drinking a few beers?
The roads were pretty bad that night and they were on a blacktop road, vs. a highway.
God bless those children.  And God be with Tanya.

Neighbors Rally as Search Expands for Missing Mother
Father of four girls killed in crash, but there's no sign of their mother, Tanya Shannon
By ANTHONY PONCE and BJ LUTZ
Updated 6:23 PM CST, Tue, Dec 7, 2010

It's believed that Tanya Shannon, 40, survived the single-car crash that killed her husband Sunday morning as they drove home from a holiday party. Authorities believe she walked away from the crash to seek help, but are stumped as what happened to her.

"We're expanding [the search] just a bit just to see if, in fact -- to give every chance we can if, in fact, Tanya did walk a little farther than we thought possibly that she could walk. We want to give her that chance. We want to do everything we can to bring this thing to a resolution," said LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton.

Fighting below-freezing temperatures and gusting winds, searchers used skinny poles to poke through thick snow drifts, looking for any sign of Shannon.

A low-flying Department of Transportation helicopter joined effort, not just acting as an eye in the sky but also using the wind from its blades as a snow-moving tool.

"We thought that if there was something that moved a little bit and give us a break and see something either of Tanya or some article of clothing that might give us a lead. That's what we were hoping for," said Templeton.

LaSalle County search for missing mom suspended
December 7, 2010 7:12 PM | No Comments

Police have suspended the search for a missing woman who survived a car crash in LaSalle County, with plans to resume at the end of the week if the weather warms and sheets of ice blanketing the rural area melt.

"It'll get us a chance to see the ground better," LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton said around 6 p.m. this evening.

He said the investigation will continue as a missing persons case while police wait for the ground to thaw.

Today marked the third day in a row police and volunteers scoured a snow-covered stretch of farm fields for Tanya Shannon, 40, a mother of four from Ransom, a town of about 400 people nearly 50 miles southwest of Joliet.

Shannon was last seen early Sunday wearing a floor-length red ball gown and a gray fleece hooded jacket as she and her husband left a holiday party in Streator, about 17 miles west of Ransom.

Authorities still have found no sign of her, and their hope that Shannon is alive is waning.
"I like to never give up until I'm proven otherwise," Templeton said, but he added, "There's just too much going against it."

Templeton called Shannon's disappearance "a mystery." He said her family said she is a loving mother who wouldn't vanish without warning or not contact her family.

Authorities haven't ruled out that Shannon was picked up.

"We can't say if there's any evidence to indicate foul play, but right now there's no evidence to indicate anything," Templeton said.

While police wait for the ground search to resume, they'll work Shannon's case by monitoring her credit cards and cell phone, Templeton said.
