It's true 4Donks that JSM prefers dogs over many people.  In fact she taught me how to beg and is trying to house break me.

Good night, you guys!  You're the best!

If you pray will you add an extra mention tonight for a dear friend who is losing his battle w/ cancer?
Home from the hospital tomorrow w/ hospice.  No more treatment other than palliative.  Thank you.
When Brian died I said that he did NOT lose a battle; he finally beat cancer as it could no longer hurt him.  I still believe that but I am sad tonight.

Pat

I will add this prayer. I understand what you are saying about the mixed emotions. The fact that they are no longer in pain is what we have asked for but we will miss the person and everything about them. Peace to all of you!.

Tolerance I posted this in Inspirations but thought it fit your situation too.

At the Hospice memorial service for my husband this was read by his nurse. It explained exactly how I felt. I thought I would like to share it.

God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be.
So,He put his arms around you
And whispered " Come to Me."
With fearful eyes I watched you
And saw you pass away.
Although I loved you dearly,
I could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard working hands at rest.
God broke my heart to prove to me
He only takes the best.

I love that - I had not though of it since they read that at Dad's funeral. He also had hospice and they are truly angels on Earth.

I made appointments today for Mac, Beela and Jazz at the groomer next week. They are just getting bathed not clipped but it takes hour and hours to dry Beela and Jazz. An all day event. Mac doesn't take long so he goes on a different day. I will be tipping the groomer mucho. Fancy won't be going to be groomed just yet. I bathe her 2x a week in that Zymox shampoo and spray her with the apple cider/water mix and it is working. She is starting to grow some fur. She is looking better and no longer scratches or bites at herself. Things are looking up.

Your furbabies are so lucky to have you.

Especially Fancy.

 an angelic monkey
Fancy is really sweet. When the vet was removing her last staples he held like a baby on her back in his arm and used side cutters to cut the staples in half to remove them and the whole time she was giving him puppy kisses. Not a mean bone in her body after all the abuse and neglect.
You and Fancy are meant for each other.  What a kind person you are, 4Donks.

I just don't get how people can be mean to children and pets and I never will. Just picture you allowing PJ to be in a cage for years without medical attention with his nails growing into the pads on his feet, protruding double hernias, horrible fur loss and skin from allergies and (not PJ) large mammary tumors. So your solution would be dumping at a high kill animal control.  Look at PJ and tell me how this is possible.
I share your disbelief and horror.  I once helped to 'clean out' a poodle puppy mill.  I only participated the one time.  I threw up and shook the whole while I worked.
I will never forget one little guy:  He was blind.  He was in a crate stacked 3 high.  There was no pan or cover in the bottom.  One of his feet had 'grown into' one of the metal crossbars.  He had to be euthanized right there in his crate.  He was attached to it.
I took 6 of the dogs home and was angry when they would not let me take more.
I got them healthy and found them homes.   Since then, I donate money and volunteer to answer phones and log endangered pets.  It is what I can do and all I can do.  Actually I have not even done that for over a year.
There is a new case here in our area and each one kills me a bit more.

Yes, yes.  We read this to the grandchildren in the family room while Hospice and the funeral home took Brian from here.  Hospice was wonderful for us, too.   God bless those able to do that kind of work.  It is corporal work of mercy.

Housetraining older dogs
You can use a modified puppy schedule to train an unhousetrained dog or one that's having housetraining problems. Start from the beginning just like a puppy, use a crate and put them on a schedule. An older dog can be expected to control itself for longer periods provided you take it outside at critical times — first thing in the morning, after meals and last thing at night. Until they're reliable, get them outside every three-to-four hours in between those times.

Adopted older dogs that have always had freedom may be unwilling to have a bowel movement when on a leash. You can either walk them longer or keep them confined until they really gotta go. Just like a puppy, don't give them the run of the house and keep them in a crate or small area if you can't supervise them. You can give them more freedom as they become more reliable.

Hockey is part of our blood up here.  At Christmas the Junior teams have a tradition called the Teddy Bear toss.  If you bring a stuffed animal to the game you get a ticket for $10.00.  When the home team scores  the first goal the bears get tossed on the ice.  In Calgary they collected over 20,000 stuffed animals this year.  They get donated to several charities including women's shelters, Salvation Army, and the players take them personally to the kids in the hospitals.  Video of the Bear Toss in Calgary this year.

They covered this on NBC news last night at 6 PM with Brian Williams.

Not looked for a video of it, but it was very cool. Said it seemed like it took several minutes until all the stuffed animals had been finally thrown, there were so many.

Cool idea.
