Bullying among senior citizens getting more common
Dec 29, 2010 1:07AM
Social workers, recreation-center officials and others who work with the elderly say bullying among senior citizens is getting more common.
As the retirement population increases and more people enter care homes and retirement centers “it’s a pretty big deal,” said Melanie Starns, an assistant Arizona Department of Economic Security director overseeing the Aging and Adult Services Division.
“The mean girls were there in school and as we get older, they are still around,” she said.
Robin Bonifas, a gerontology expert at Arizona State University, estimates that 10 percent to 20 percent of older people in care homes experience some type of abuse from fellow residents.
Doris Lor, 76, said despite repeated complaints to the director of her homeowners association in Chandler, Ariz, she still can’t get a seat at a card table, gets the cold shoulder at the women’s club and has been chased away from seats at the community pool.
“No matter where you go, even if you pay for the activity, the clique saves all the seats,” Lor said.

Tell you how slow I am this morning. When I saw the picture CC posted I thought he had photo shopped the couch.
Then it dawned on me the couch matched the chair.
Cute pic JSM. But where is the pic of CC on the couch?
Fairs fair you know
One more day
I thought the same thing about the couch.
Oh Trimm I am so glad I wasn't the only one.
Did you get in to see you doctor today? Just got back from taking daughter she as pneumonia. So please take care of your self.
Oh, get better right away, Trimm. Prayers for you and Green Eyes' Daughter.

Hi 4 donks and TBM... Greeneyes was just asking about you 4 donks. TBM I am hungry, I want a coney.
Allow me ....
I have to learn to eat a proper diet. Last night I turned on the deep fryer and had a great big plate of tater tots and beer batter onion rings. Not balanced but GOOOOOOOD ! Tonight I had a toasted peanut butter and bacon sammich. At least there was protein involved.
TBM I could really use a coney dog.
Onion rings and tater tots!!! Love them. I am having a sammich tonight. 4 donks, do y'all do black eyed peas and cabbage for New Years? I always thought it was a Southern thing, but maybe just a Texas thing. Just wondering.
Never heard of it till we moved to Florida. I'll stick with the tater tots and onion rings.

Good morning!
Our weather is really gross! It is really warming up and the streets are swimming! We have a lot of snow and it is melting too quickly. Still icy stretches. Thank goodness for my new ice cleats (Thank You, 4 Donks, for encouraging me not to give up on the concept). PJ was a soggy mess when we came in from our walk.
Hope all the monkeys and their loved ones are feeling better today.
Bearly some of your posts really quack me up, ducky!!

I got a great fryer for Christmas two years ago. Used it quite a bit that winter. Made doughnuts, even. LOL
Darn thing made some great fried food! Bet your tater tots are much better in that fryer than in the oven. LOL
Also used a LOT of oil each time. Too much. Got expensive. (Do you re-use your oil? If so, how do you store it?)
Haven't used it since.
I use peanut oil because I'm so health conscious.
I use very little oil each time I use it. The whole thing comes apart and the part that holds the oil has a cover and I store it in the refrigerator. It just takes longer to heat up but the instructions say you can store it at room temp. I change the oil when the color starts to darken.
If you buy poppin fresh refrigerator rolls and cut each one in quarters..deep fry and cover in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar....GREAT SNACK like donut holes.

This morning at 6:00 I had to take the garbage can down to the road for pick up and it was raining. It's odd to have rain and bare ground on one part of the property and still have snow on other parts. Be careful of those sneaky slippery spots.

My hubby the food guys says that you can store oil on the counter (even used) for about a month safely. I always trust him since he does the health dept thing all the time. I was grossed out the first time he re used oil but I have not died yet so it must be ok!

My sister stores hers on the counter but the only thing on my counter is the coffee pot. Lazy on my part to just be able to clean counter tops without having to move things. I also have dogs that have heads above the level of the counter tops and I don't want to tempt them with stuff.

Eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day is thought to bring prosperity.
The "good luck" traditions of eating black-eyed peas at Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, are recorded in the Babylonian Talmud.
In the United States, the first Sephardi Jews arrived in Georgia in the 1730s, and have lived there continuously since. The Jewish practice was apparently adopted by non-Jews around the time of the American Civil War.
In the Southern United States,[5] the peas are typically cooked with a pork product for flavoring (such as bacon, ham bones, fatback, or hog jowl), diced onion, and served with a hot chili sauce or a pepper-flavored vinegar.
The traditional meal also features collard, turnip, or mustard greens, and ham. The peas, since they swell when cooked, symbolize prosperity; the greens symbolize money; the pork, because pigs root forward when foraging, represents positive motion.[6] Cornbread also often accompanies this meal.
<snipped from wikipedia>
Traditional New Year foods are also thought to bring luck. Many cultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes "coming full circle," completing a year's cycle. For that reason, the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year's Day will bring good fortune.
Many parts of the U.S. celebrate the new year by consuming black-eyed peas. These legumes are typically accompanied by either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity.
Cabbage
is another "good luck" vegetable that is consumed on New Year's Day by many. Cabbage leaves are also considered a sign of prosperity, being representative of paper currency. In some regions, rice is a lucky food that is eaten on New Year's Day.
Thanks Brandi for the info. It has always been a tradition here, never knew why except that cabbage brings money
