Antigo teenager Christina M. Whaley missing since Monday

By Chad Dally • Wausau Daily Herald • December 19, 2010

The Antigo Police Department is asking for help locating an Antigo teenager who has been missing since Monday.

In an alert released Friday, police said 16-year-old Christina M. Whaley was last seen leaving Antigo High School on Dec. 13 wearing jeans and a white zip-up jacket with a gray lining. A family member alerted police that evening when Whaley did not return home.

Detective Sgt. Dan Duley of the Antigo Police Department said Saturday that Whaley called her stepgrandfather in the state of Washington and said she was OK. The call was made from an unknown number, but no other details about the call were available, Duley said.

The department is investigating the incident as a missing person case and has not ruled out foul play. Duley said Whaley could be visiting friends in Wausau, and she also has a noncustodial mother who lives in Circle Pine, Minn.

Whaley's father, Mark Spencer of Antigo, could not be reached for comment Saturday.
Roxan Bornemann, administrator for the Unified School District of Antigo, said she was made aware of Whaley's disappearance Friday and has no other information. She said the district will work with law enforcement to provide any assistance it can.

Whaley is white and is described as about 5 feet, 9 inches and weighing about 140 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about Whaley is urged to call 911 or the Antigo Police Department at 715-627-6411.

Other missing persons

Duley said there is no indication so far of a connection to another Antigo missing person case involving Kayla Berg.

According to police, Berg, who was 16 when she disappeared, left her father's home in Antigo on Aug. 11, 2009, and was dropped off at an abandoned home near Colonial Manor in Wausau. She has not been seen since.

Kevin J. Kielcheski, 25, of Deerbrook admitted to police he drove Berg to the abandoned home that day, but has pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree reckless endangerment in connection with the case. A jury trial is scheduled for Kielcheski on Feb. 16 in Langlade County.

The Wausau Police Department continues to investigate the disappearance of Stephanie Low, 22, who has not been seen or heard from since Oct. 10. Lt. Mark Pankow of the Wausau Police Department said Saturday there are no new developments in the case.

The state Department of Justice's Wisconsin Clearinghouse for Missing and Exploited Children is assisting Wausau Police Department in its search for Low.

Anyone with information about Low's disappearance is asked to call Marathon County CrimeStoppers at 877-409-8777.

Authorities search for 16-year-old Antigo women
December 18, 2010

ANTIGO (WAOW) -- Authorities say Christina Whaley was last seen Monday afternoon walking away from Antigo High School. Friday the Antigo Police Department put out an alert on the missing teen.

"At this point we don't know where she is, so there's always a danger involved with any missing child until they're found," said Daniel Duley, detective sergeant of the Antigo Police Department.

Whaley is sixteen years old, 5 foot 9 inches and weighs 140 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes and she was last seen wearing jeans and white zip up with gray lining.

Police say she lives in Antigo with her relatives.

Monday night, after not hearing from her after school, her aunt called police.

Authorities tell us the last time anyone heard from her, was Wednesday when she called her grandfather.

She didn't not tell him her whereabouts only that she was "okay."

Whaley's mother lives in Minnesota and authorities say she mentioned often how she wanted to go live with her.

But police say her mother hasn't heard from her.

"She's as interested as anyone else at finding where Christina's at and locating her so that we know she's safe and that nothing's happened to her," Duley added.

Investigators say they are communicating with authorities near her mother, but so far they have no leads.

"I've had several telephone conversations with her and her local law enforcement where she lives has been in contact with her ."

Antigo Police also continue their search for Kayla Berg, an Antigo teen who went missing over a year ago.

But at this point, they do not see a connection.

"As of now there is not a direct link but it's always a possibility. It's something we are keeping in mind and are looking into."

Antigo teenager found in Minn.

A 16-year-old from Antigo was found near a family member in Minnesota today.
Det. Sgt. Dan Duley of the Antigo Police Department said Christina M. Whaley was found today near the home of her non-custodial mother in Circle Pine, Minn. She was last seen Dec. 13 leaving the Antigo High School, and last contacted family in the state of Washington on Dec. 15 by telephone.

Duley said Christina was located by officers from the Blaine, Minn. police department, but no other information was immediately available about how police located Whaley.
Arrangements are being made to bring Whaley back to the Antigo area, Duley said.
The incident remains under investigation, Duley said.

The Wausau Daily Herald will have more information on this story as it becomes available.
