Mayor:New Orleans 'piled it on' for $77 billion law suit

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- Only $1 billion of the $77 billion the city is seeking from the Army Corps of Engineers is for infrastructure damages it says it suffered because of levee breaches during Hurricane Katrina. The rest is for such things as the city's tarnished image and tourist industry losses.

The city "looked at everything and just kind of piled it on," Mayor Ray Nagin said.

"We got some advice from some attorneys to be aggressive with the number, and we'll see what happens," he said.

New Orleans has joined big business and thousands of homeowners in filing claims seeking compensation from the corps for damages sustained when the levees broke during the 2005 storm, flooding 80 percent of the city.

The claims allege poor design and negligence by the corps led to the failure of flood walls and levees.

The city attorney's office also considered such things as "decreases in the city's image, tourist industry activity and potential business industry, losses in the tax base and generated revenue, and a decrease in the city's overall population," in making the assessment, according to a statement from City Hall.

A spokeswoman for the mayor could not explain how the city quantified losses not tied to infrastructure. A 43-page form filed with the corps, reserving the city's right to sue for $77 billion, also provides little insight. It does not quantify "loss of tax revenue," for example, and supporting documents for city-owned properties, such as a police crime lab and libraries, omit any estimates of property values or flood-related damages, The Times-Picayune newspaper reported Saturday.

Who you mean when you say "no one will talk about the corruption." Of course, the mayor was highly responsible but it was the Bush administration which was not prepared and didn't come through with the help that was needed.

If you noticed today (or maybe yesterday) GW43 hustled himself over to visit Enterprise High School in Alabama which was struck by a massive tornado. Eight students at the school were killed.

I guess Bush's publicity directors told him to get himself the hell over to Alabama to view the ruins so he would appear to be focused on this, as opposed to how he was not focused on New Orleans.

I like Katablogs post on the subject and fully agree with her on it. People like to dump it on Bush as if it's his fault. Sorry to say, but it wasn't. No one could of been prepared for this type of disaster, no one.  Bush called NewOrleans Governor and asked if they needed assistant and she said, "no, we have it under controll". He told her if she finds they do need help to let him know, they would be on stand by. So let's dump the fault where it is due.

New Orleans Wishes for $77 Billion

Mayor: New Orleans 'piled it on' for $77 billion lawsuit is enough to make republicans and democrats alike toss their cookies. The Mayor who chose to leave school buses in the low lands while his city flooded is bragging about piling on ridiculous money demands in a lawsuit against the Corp of Engineers by the City of New Orleans.

Americans poured out their hearts and souls to help the people of New Orleans after Katrina. The US government has thrown all sorts of money at this city in efforts to not only rebuild but also rejuvenate a city that still has time and money for Marti Gras. This makes no difference to Mayor Ray Nagin as he backs up to the trough for yet more money - this time he wants truck loads.

Any sense of justice would question decisions made by the Governor on down to Mayor Nagin - decisions that turned away an Amtrak train that could hold up to 1,000 people for evacuation. A City who was offered help before Katrina struck and assured people they didn't need it. A City that couldn't articulate what they needed after Katrina struck. Police officers who instead of stopping looters, joined them. A City out of control who still hasn't learned.

Thanks for the info.  It at least cleared up that they were neighbors in Texas and not in Maine.

Louise...

New Orleans was in disrepair wayyyyyyyyyyyy before Bush and Katrina....

google KINGFISHER... google HEWY LONG....

the people in the 9th ward have lived that way for generations because of the fact that all the federal money sent down there to actually prevent the)problems after Katrina ... due to the first hurricane, Camile ( I think that was the name in the 30's) went to line the politican's pockets way before anyone had ever heard the name BUSH... don't kid yourself, that disaster was not only caused in this time.... it had been building for a long time.  That is the corruption I spoke of....
