Man charged with kidnapping teen
January 23, 2011

AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

A Lubbock man was charged with kidnapping a 15-year-old Monterey High School student who was listed as a runaway for weeks, Lubbock police announced Saturday.

Authorities were searching for Elizabeth Ennen on Saturday. They believe she was kidnapped during a Jan. 4 baby-sitting job at the Carriage House motel in Southeast Lubbock, said Lubbock police Capt. Greg Stevens.

Police arrested 45-year-old Humberto Maldonado Salinas Jr. late Friday on a count of aggravated kidnapping in connection with Elizabeth's disappearance. He was charged with kidnapping at the police station, where he had been Friday evening after being arrested on an unrelated traffic warrant.

Elizabeth iswhite, about 5 feet, 3 inches tall, 135 pounds with sandy blonde hair and brown eyes.

Stevens said he was not aware of any leads investigators had on Elizabeth's location.

Asked if Elizabeth was believed to be in danger, Stevens said he couldn’t release specific concerns, but referred to the definition of an aggravated kidnapping:

“When a person intentionally or knowingly abducts another person with intent to hold him/her for ransom, use him/her as a hostage, facilitate the commission of a felony, afflict bodily injury on him/her or abuse him/her sexually, terrorize him/her or a third person ...” according to the state penal code.

“Right now this is a kidnapping investigation, not a homicide investigation,” Stevens said.

Police initially listed Elizabeth as a runaway after her mother reported her missing just after midnight Jan. 5 when the 15-year-old hadn’t returned from the baby-sitting job, according to a police report.

Members of Elizabeth's family were frustrated with police for not treating the case as a kidnapping from the beginning, Stevens and Elizabeth's cousin, Chris Moss, said Saturday.

“We told them straight up from day one it wasn’t like her to run off,” Moss said.

Stevens said police were initially sympathetic with the family’s concern that Elizabeth's disappearance was more than a case of a runaway teenager, but did not have evidence to suggest she was kidnapped.

It wasn’t until police found evidence leading investigators to believe Elizabeth was kidnapped by Salinas that police labeled her as a kidnapping victim.

Stevens would not release details about the evidence or where it was gathered.

He did say Salinas is a relative of Elizabeth's boyfriend and was a resident of the Carriage House in the 900 block of East Slaton Road.

He wouldn’t confirm if her baby-sitting jobinvolved Salinas or his room at the motel.

Moss said Salinas also is a close friend of Elizabeth's mother, Virginia Ennen.

"And I'm livid," Moss said.

Moss said he wasn’t sure what evidence police found that led investigators to believe, like her family, that Elizabeth actually had been kidnapped.

Standing late Saturday in the doorway of Elizabeth's house at 42nd Street and Avenue L, Moss said his main concern was for her to be found soon, alive and well.

“I’m hopeful — I have to stay that way,” he said.

Salinas was in the Lubbock County Detention Center Saturday in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Police urge anyone with information to call Lubbock police at 775-2788 or Crime Line at 741-1000. Callers may remain anonymous.

A Lubbock teen has been missing for more than two weeks, and may be in danger.

15-year-old Elizabeth Ennen was considered an endangered runaway, but now the Lubbock Police Department has reason to believe she was actually kidnapped.

45-year-old Humberto Salinas has been arrested for his alleged involvement in her disappearance.

Police say Ennen and Salinas were acquaintances.

Ennen reportedly went missing after babysitting Salina's children at the Carriage House Motel on January 5th.

According to LPD there were no witnesses or details surrounding the date of the event, which is why she was labeled as a runaway to begin with.

Ennen is considered to be in danger. She's described as a white female, 5'3'', 135 pounds, with sandy brown hair, and brown eyes.

She might go by the nickname Beth or Lizzie.

"If there's no lead to follow right then, it doesn't really matter what you call it. If there's no where to look, we don't know where to start looking. Where would you send a search party if you called them out right then? Does that make sense? And so, it's really too early to tell right now, what difference it would have made had it been categorized as missing endangered right then. It could have made a great difference, could have made no difference at all, we just don't know right now," LPD Captain Greg Stevens said.

If you have any information regarding Ennen's whereabouts call Lubbock Crimeline at 741-1000.

'Spotlight on the Missing': Elizabeth Ennen, friend charged in her kidnapping

LUBBOCK, Texas -- A long-time family friend has been arrested and charged in the kidnapping of missing Texas teen, 15-year-old Elizabeth Marlene Ennen, who was dropped off in the wee hours of the morning Jan. 6 during a babysitting job and has never been heard from or seen since.

She did not have her purse, cell phone, or other personal belongings with her. She had no coat, with temperatures dipping into the high 20s that night.

Initially police classified Elizabeth's case a "runaway," even though her family said from the beginning that they did not believe she would run away. Lubbock Police now say they believe Elizabeth was kidnapped and have made an arrest.

The case took a twist over the weekend when three friends of Elizabeth's family were arrested: Her 19-year-old boyfriend, his father, and his father's common-law wife.

Police arrested Humberto "Art" Maldonado Salinas, 45, Saturday morning at 7:40 a.m. He has been charged with "Aggravated Kidnapping" and is being held on $250,000 bail.

That same morning at 11:20 a.m. police arrested Humberto Salinas' common-law wife, Carmen Manzanares, in what Lubbock County Jail Sergeant Duncan says is an unrelated case.

Manzanares was arrested for failure to produce a driver's license and is being held in the county jail until Jan. 29, "sitting out her fine," according to a Lubbock County Jail clerk.

Also that same morning at 1:15 a.m. Salinas' son, Humberto Lopez Salinas, 19, was arrested on theft charges and was released that day on $5,000 bail. Click here for more details on the arrests, and to read: "Flurry of activity in missing Texas teen case; suspected kidnapper arrested."

Police search fields and lakes for evidence in teen's kidnapping
January 23, 2011

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Sunday afternoon dozens of law enforcement launched a large scale search for clues leading to the disappearance of Lubbock teen Elizabeth Ennen who went missing more than two weeks ago.

The Carriage House Motel was the last place Elizabeth was known to be. Less than a mile away from the motel a dive team slowly circled a lake for hours searching for evidence. A helicopter, along with several police officers by foot and on horse also searched nearby fields, but authorities have not released any information on whether they found anything.(snipped)

Surveillance captures Lubbock teen's abduction on video
January 24, 2011

A surveillance video from the last night 15-year-old Elizabeth Ennen was seen alive shows her boyfriend’s father chasing her and then physically forcing her into the parking lot at the Carriage House, court documents released this morning reveal.

Police arrested Humberto Salinas Jr. — the father of her boyfriend— on aggravated kidnapping charges late Friday, but have not yet found Ennen, who has been missing since Jan. 5.

Ennen’s family reported her missing after she didn’t come home from babysitting for Salinas at the Carriage House, 912 E. Slaton Road. Police initially classified her as a runaway, but announced this weekend they believed she’d been kidnapped on Jan. 5.

Police Detective Jeremy Steven Winters wrote the following in a report dated Jan. 21:

“Humberto Salinas Jr. forces Elizabeth Ennen into room 113 at the Carriage House against her will.

Humberto Salinas Jr. is then seen chasing Elizabeth Ennen into a corner. He then escorts her out into the parking lot by force. He has his hand around her arm leading her.

This video depicts that Elizabeth Ennen was afraid of Humberto Salinas Jr. Humberto Salinas Jr. knowingly abducted Elizabeth Ennen.

Elizabeth Ennen has not been seen nor had contact with anyone since Humberto Salinas escorted her to the parking lot. Elizabeth Ennen has been missing since 01-05-11.”

Police this morning said they don’t have any leads into Ennen’s whereabouts.

Ennen was described as a white girl with sandy colored hair and brown eyes, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. She is 5 feet, 3 inches and weighs about 135 pounds. She also may go by the nickname Beth or Lizzie.

Anyone with information about Ennen’s whereabouts should call the national center at 1 (800) 843-5678 (1-800-THE-LOST) or the Lubbock Police Department at (806) 775-2811.

Residents also may call Crime Line at 741-1000 and remain anonymous.

Where was Elizabeth's boyfriend when all this was happening?

I haven't seen anything to say where Elizabeth's boyfriend Humberto Lopez Salinas was during that time, but the police did arrest him and Humberto Salina's common-law wife on unrelated charges:

This is beyond frustrating! I feel so bad for Elizabeth's family. If LE had taken them seriously from the beginning and viewed the surveillance tapes at the motel, they would have known from the get go that this poor young woman had been kidnapped. I don't think Elizabeth will be found alive, I just hope they can find her so her family can have some resolution and move forward.

I so agree. The Police spokesman said they have 45 runaways listed and I think they need to go back and revisit everyone of these cases. I'm sure they didn't investigate any of these cases.

No offense to any TX monkeys, but WTH is with LE down yonder? 45 runaways? I wonder how many of those "runaways" are abducted children...Hailey and Elizabeth were both tagged as runaways from the beginning and chances are, no, I'd put money on it that valuable time and evidence was lost by that classification. IIRC, LE stated, on record, that Mona Nelson, accused murderer of poor jonathon Foster, had killed before. How many other child predators are out there, how many are getting away with this and how many children will have to die before LE takes a missing child seriously?...pardon me, I'm just pizzy about all these kids in TX lately.

So Elizabeth was babysitting for Salina, and the wife as well as the son was also arrested. Who then "supposedly" dropped her off at 1:30 in the morning and then realized she had left her purse in the car?

Lies from the get go!
