A missing San Rafael schoolteacher was going through a divorce and had lost three close relatives over the past year, but it's not known whether those events played a role in her disappearance, her cousin said today.

Debra Schmitt, 53, wrote "Thank you everyone" on the board of her English class at Terra Linda High School but never showed up last Thursday, officials said. Her school keys were in the classroom. She was last seen the day before in Ross, where she lives.

This doesn't sound good.  She has had a ton of bad things happen to her.  I hope she's ok but she may have simply taken off and taken her own life.   I feel bad for her family and friends.

Teacher Debra Schmitt's body found in creek bed
January 29, 2011

The body of a missing San Rafael schoolteacher was found in a creek bed Saturday, not too far from her home in Ross, according to her family.

Debra Schmitt, 53, a teacher at Terra Linda High School, had last been seen in Ross on Jan. 19. Searchers had scoured Golden Gate Park and other parks in San Francisco. Her body was found at 9:50 a.m. in a creek bed within Ross town limits, said Ross police Sgt. Gianfranco Campa, who did not elaborate.

The cause of her death won't be determined until after an autopsy by the Marin County coroner. "An initial examination of the scene where Schmitt was located did not reveal any signs or indications of foul play," Campa said.

Very sad.  Sounds like she just couldn't take any more.

Body of Missing Teacher Found
January 21, 2011

The body of a missing San Rafael school teacher has been found.  Fifty-three year-old Debra Schmitt was located in a creekbed not too far from her home in Ross.

Authorities say they won't know Schmitt's cause of death until the Marin County Coroner does an autopsy. Schmitt leaves behind her estranged husband and a son, currently in the 8th grade.
******************************

It appears Mrs. Schmitt was just overwhelmed in with what was going on in her life.  It's really sad that she leaves a young son behind.  It must be absolutely devastating for him.
