Search for missing toddler in New Braunfels continues
February 5, 2011

More than 100 police, fire and EMS personnel along with volunteers from San Antonio and Austin combed a New Braunfels neighborhood for an 18-month-old toddler missing since Friday night.
Authorities are pursuing the idea that the child, who has been described as very mobile and who has been walking for about 10 months, may have wandered away from his parents' mobile home in the 2600 block of Savannah Hill Circle.

Police were summoned to the trailer park shortly before 8:40 p.m. Friday and a search involving local law enforcement was launched. Officials were told the child had last been seen inside the home about 20 minutes before police were called.

Police searched inside the home several times and then undertook a house-to-house search as a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter searched the area from above.

He said volunteers turned out to assist after more than 2,000 area residents were alerted via the Emergency Notification System.
(snip)
Law enforcement remained onsite overnight, Penshorn said.
The child was described as being 2 feet tall and weighing 30 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue and red, long sleeve shirt, a grey long sleeve t-shirt, beige jeans and black and white socks.

4 P.M. UPDATE: Joshua Davis still missing
Posted: Saturday, February 5, 2011 4:22 pm | Updated: 4:27 pm, Sat Feb 5, 2011.

New Braunfels Police say 18-month-old Joshua Davis still has not been found. The volunteer search site at Klein Road Elementary will be shut down at 6 p.m. today, but uniform officers will continue looking for the child.
A search party of 100 volunteers is looking for Joshua, who has been missing since Friday night.
Police say child is very mobile, and it is conceivable that he left the house in the 2600 block of Savannah Hill Circle on his own and took off running, covering a short area in a short period of time.
Throughout the evening, the glass front door was open.
Joshua was last seen in family's double-wide kitchen dining area with five or six family members. Authorities do not suspect alcohol or drugs played in a role in his family's awareness of Joshua's disappearance.
The front glass door did not latch properly, police said.

Police say they have no evidence to suspect that Joshua was abducted by a registered sex offender who lives across the street from his parents. Authorities believe the child just wandered away from the home.

NBPD spokesman Lt. Mike Penshorn will give another news conference at 8 p.m. today. Citizens can call (830) 221-4570 if they have any information leading to Joshua's whereabouts.

18-month-old boy disappears, volunteers join police in search
February 5, 2011

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - More than 100 police, fire and other officials combined with volunteers to search for 18-month-old Joshua Davis Junior who has been missing since Friday night. His parents say Joshua was last seen inside his home before disappearing. Texas Troopers, Comal and Guadalupe County Sheriff’s deputies along with the Heidi Search Center have come together to find the missing baby.
(snip)
As of right now we have a number of rescue teams that are assisting us. We have a dog search team out of College Station, as well as a Travis County and Alamo Rescue Teams. Right now we’re incorporating volunteers to help with the actual area search. Once the evening comes we’ll be limiting the search to uniformed personnel,” explained Lt. Michael Penshorn from the New Braunfels Police Department. “As of right now we have nothing that would indicate to us that there’s any type of foul play or an actual abduction.”

9:30 P.M. UPDATE Officers and K-9s will search all night for Joshua
February 5, 2011

Officers and bloodhounds will continue to search overnight for 18-month-old Joshua Davis, who’s been missing since Friday evening, New Braunfels Police Department Lt. Michael Penshorn said at an 8 p.m. Saturday press briefing.

Penshorn said searchers are trying to stay upbeat.

“We’re not losing hope. We’re looking at this optimistically and we’re really hoping and praying that he ends up safe,” he said.

The use of civilian volunteer searchers was suspended at 6 p.m., he said, adding that authorities were concerned about darkness and other hazards facing the volunteers.
(snip)
Additional K-9 units and search-and-rescue teams will be brought in early Sunday morning to aid in the search, he said.

“But we will not be utilizing any more volunteers from the public. We will just be using the specialized search-and-rescue teams. We do ask that any civilian volunteers who were wanting to assist in this case to stay home and monitor the situation in case things do change,” Penshorn said.

The vast majority of the areas surrounding Joshua’s southeast New Braunfels home, in the 2600 block of Savannah Hill Circle, where the child was last seen, have been searched, Penshorn said. “Primarily most of the areas were searched on foot.”

The one- to two-square-mile area searched on foot included small creeks, heavy woods and many fenced areas.

“It was an organized search in which areas were organized into specific grids using maps, and each grid had a specific group which was searching just that area. That involved individuals and several K-9 teams.”

He said there is one unsearched section. “We’re coordinating with the property owner and should be covering it tomorrow.”
He said the search plan for tomorrow is to concentrate on the more difficult areas to access. “Tomorrow is going to be more of a targeted search rather than the broad grid search that we’ve been conducting for the past day.”

A Department of Public Safety helicopter has been assisting in the search, he said.
(snip)
The next press briefing is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday.

Missing toddler: Wandered off or abducted?
February 6, 2011

SAN ANTONIO -- Both the family of an 18 month old New Braunfels boy and law enforcement desperately searched for the missing child. However, their theories on why the toddler is missing is different.

As of Saturday evening, authorities continue to treat this case as a search and rescue effort.

Investigators suspect the child may have wandered from his home after a family friend left Friday night. The family fears an abductor may be behind the child's disappearance.
(snip)
Davis and his girlfriend are expecting their third child this month. The couple found their son’s baseball sitting on their mailbox Saturday morning, a startling revelation since it had not been there a day before. As a result, they believe an abductor took their son from the home.

Davis has a message for the person who has his Joshua.

"I just want my son. I could care less who did it. In fact if they do find out, I don't even want to know who did it. I just want my son back that's all I want," Davis said.
(snip)
If you have any information on Joshua Davis’ whereabouts, please give New Braunfels Police a call at: (830) 221-4570.

6:30 P.M. UPDATE: Search for Joshua continues; NBPD interviews sex offender
Posted February 5, 2011, Updated February 6, 2011

(snip)
Sex offenders live in neighborhood

Although police officials have questioned Joshua’s parents, Sabrina Benitez, 21, and Josh Davis, 23, other family members present at the time of Joshua’s disappearance and residents in the Savannah Hill Circle neighborhood, family friends are suspicious of a neighbor. The Texas Department of Public Safety’s sex offender registry lists five people who live within a one-mile radius of the house, including one man on Savannah Hill Circle.

“The sex offender has been interviewed, and we have also conducted searches on his residence and vehicle. As of right now, we have nothing to believe he’s involved in this case,” Penshorn said.

Family friend Lee Jackson said, “There was one of (Joshua’s) toy balls found at the end of the block. It was on top of some mailboxes. There’s no way he got it up there by himself.”
(snip)
“They have no leads,” said Sabrina Benitez, Joshua’s mother, through tears. “I last saw him around 7:40 p.m. in my room watching ‘Toy Story.’ When I realized he hadn’t come back to watch with me, I realized he was missing.”

Benitez is expecting her second child, a boy, next month.

NBPD officials do not suspect alcohol or drugs played a factor in the family’s awareness of Joshua’s disappearance.

Search continues tonight

The Klein Road Elementary School search and rescue command site stopped volunteer searches at 6 p.m. Saturday. Police and fire personnel will continue the search throughout the night.

“This is not in the middle of nowhere,” volunteer Mandy Lorance said. “There’s got to be somebody that knows something.”

The volunteer search and rescue will resume around 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

“Please bring my baby home,” Benitez said. “Please let him be OK.”

Anyone who finds Joshua or knows of his whereabouts is urged to call NBPD at (830) 221-4570.

Day 3 of Search for Missing Boy - Now a Recovery Operation
February 6, 2011

(New Braunfels, TX) -- For the 3rd straight day, New Braunfels Police and search teams from across the state are continuing the search for an 18-month old missing boy in the area off of Walnut and Klein Road, and now police officials say the search is transitioning from a Search and Rescue operation into a recovery operation.
(snip)
At a press conference held Sunday morning at police headquarters, police officials also reiterated that they have checked extensively into other options, like abduction, even going so far as to check-in with sex offenders in the immediate area, all with no indication that the boy was abducted. That's why an Amber Alert has not been issued, and although K-9 search teams continue to comb the neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods, police officials believe this is simply a case of a very mobile toddler wandering out into the night and getting lost.

Today, police have asked volunteers to stay at home, to make room for specialized K-9 search teams that need more space and less people in order to catch the scent of the boy. They will also be utilizing some new tools, like ATV's for ground searches, and an aerial drone to search from the sky. There is also one large piece of property in that area that they have not yet searched because the property owner wanted to be present during the search, and that area will be combed over today. Other searchers will concentrate on other areas that may not have been searched as thoroughly, with dive teams being called in to search several ponds and stock tanks in that area.
(snip)
Another press conference is scheduled for this afternoon.

http://www.mysanantonio.com/default/article/New-Braunfels-toddler-still-missing-999561.php

The search for a New Braunfels toddler missing since Friday night transitioned from search and rescue to recovery, authorities said early Sunday.

After being missing for more than 36 hours, authorities said that weather conditions and the time that Joshua Davis Jr., 18 months old, has been missing forced them to alter their strategy and downgrade hopes the child could be found safe.

Sunday, police and search coordinators were to use more K-9 dog teams and were to add specialized dogs who work on scent to recover cadavers.
(snip)

“At this point, the child has not been located, and we are switching from search and rescue mode to recovery,” a somber Lt. Michael Penshorn said Sunday morning.

“Because of weather conditions — the overnight cold temperatures Friday and Saturday nights — and the length of time the child has been missing, common sense dictates that we change this out of search and rescue,” he said.

“We are still hoping that the child can be found alive and safe,” Penshorn said. “But the likelihood at this stage is that rather than locate him, we will recover” the youngster's body.
(snip)

Sunday, specialized dog-handler teams were to comb areas that contain thick vegetation, streams and other difficult terrain, he said.

“We have to think of the volunteer's safety, and this has become a more specialized operation,” Penshorn said, noting that cadaver dogs, trained to follow a specific scent, work better when there are fewer individuals in the area.

(snip)
She said the family suspected a person who was at the residence when the child went missing; she said he has changed his story. That person apparently was the last one to see the youngster inside the home, Benitez said.

But Penshorn said police have nothing to indicate that foul play was involved.

“We don't have anything that points to abduction at this time,” Penshorn said. “And we are proceeding on the idea that the child wandered off by himself.”

“The likelihood of him being safe after being gone 36 hours over two cold nights is, well, not that good.”

Seriously?  A toddler is missing and an area hasn't been searched because the property owner wanted to be present?

I know this sounds bad but I have property with LGDs and rescue donkeys and people and or animals could be in jeopardy(gates left open, dogs going after strangers, donkeys getting spooked) if I wasn't there. There were areas in the Hailey Dunn search that volunteers were not allowed on due to liability issues and only LE was allowed to search.
