Missing Child Found Dead
February 5, 2011

GUTHRIE, Ky-. A missing 9-year-old girl has been found dead. Kentucky State Police say Amy Dye, a 4th grader at South Todd Elementary School, was reported missing Friday night.

The family lives along Dogwood Drive near Guthrie in Todd County. Investigators said her body was found just after midnight under brush about 100 yards from her home.

The family was grieving Saturday evening. And with no suspects, there had certainly been no arrests made in this case by Saturday night.

An autopsy indicated the little girl died from blunt force trauma; investigators say the test showed she suffered from multiple blows. This evidence leads investigators to call her death a homicide.

The husband and wife are not the child's biological parents. The child was related to the wife and legally adopted by the couple.

Autopsy finding released on Todd County girl
February 6, 2011

Recke said his agency received a call from the Todd County Sheriff's Department at 10:20 p.m. CST Friday requesting help with a missing person's report for the girl. Two hours later, Todd County officials called KSP and requested detectives be sent because the girl had been found dead.

The girl's body was found in an area past the dead end of Dogwood Lane.

At 2:15 a.m., two state troopers and a state fish and wildlife officer walked a few hundred yards along a gravel drive with flashlights and searched for something on the ground and in adjacent fields. They did not appear to find anything.

A few minutes later, KSP requested generators from the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department to power outdoor lights. They decided later they would not need the lights, said Recke.

Around 3:30 a.m., the Todd County Sheriff's Department drove a man and a woman in separate sheriff's cruisers from the scene of the death investigation to the Trenton City Hall for questioning.

Recke said he did not know if they were family members or suspects. Their names have not been released.

The Todd County coroner's office drove to the scene at 3:50 a.m. Later, Coroner Bob Whittlesey told the New Era that information would be released through state police.

Amy Dye’s brother pleads guilty to her murder
Associated Press Published 2:42 p.m. ET March 6, 2015

ELKTON, Ky. — A western Kentucky man has pleaded guilty to murder in the beating death of his 9-year-old sister.

The Kentucky New Era reports 21-year-old Garrett Dye admitted on Wednesday in Todd Circuit Court to killing Amy Dye. In exchange, prosecutors are recommending that he serve 25 years in prison and give up his right to appeal the conviction.

Dye was scheduled to go on trial March 9 in the 2011 fatal beating of his sister, whose body was found near the farm where they lived.

Garrett Dye pleaded guilty in 2011 and was sentenced to 50 years in prison, but reserved his right to appeal his confession to police. The Kentucky Supreme Court overturned his conviction and sentence in 2013, ruling that his confession was coerced. Justices ordered a new trial in the case.

Todd Circuit Judge Tyler Gill said he would honor the terms of the plea agreement after questioning Dye repeatedly about his motive in killing his sister.

“I don’t know what you want me to say, sir,” Dye said as Gill kept asking for answers.

Garret Dye said “yes, sir” when asked whether he was honest when he said previously that he killed her because she wouldn’t stop talking.

He said “no, sir” when asked if he killed the girl out of anger.

Stephanie Ritchie, Dye’s attorney, said he pleaded guilty days before his trial was to begin because he didn’t want to put his family through the proceedings.

“Garrett has always acknowledged that he killed his sister,” Ritchie said. “… and I don’t think he knows why.”

Dye will have to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
