Police to arrest father for alleged child abuse

<snipped>

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A mysterious death investigation involving hazardous materials and an injured father and son has led to officials taking several children into custody.

In addition to an investigation by the Department of Children and Families, police have opened a criminal investigation into the death of a person found inside a pesticide truck found on the side of the highway, early Monday morning. Tuesday afternoon, the FBI and other agencies were at the scene where the vehicle still sat by the side of road, on Interstate 95, north of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard.

Monday morning, West Palm Beach Fire Rescue crew members rescued a man and his son suffering acid burns from the truck. Three firefighters and a police officer needed to be hospitalized for exposure to the acid soon after the rescue.

Officials had found 53-year-old George Barahona and his adopted 10-year-old son Victor Vocter inside the cabin of the immobile truck and a body in a bag on the truck's bed, at around 7:30 a.m. Monday. "It was a pesticide truck, and there were a variety of contaminants in the vehicle that caused the young boy to have a seizure and caused the father to have medical conditions," said Chase Scott of the West Palm Beach Police Department.

Barahona and Vocter remain hospitalized in serious condition. Vocter has since been quarantined and incubated in intensive care, suffering from serious acid burns to his body. When Vocter arrived at St. Mary's Hospital, several employees were affected by the chemical smell on his body. Lori Stallings of St. Mary's Hospital said, "The product could cause irritation to the ears or to the skin, and they were quite easily taken care of. They washed it off."

Death of girl found in truck in West Palm Beach probed as abuse case

The body found inside a truck in Palm Beach County turned out to be the 10-year-old adoptive daughter of the Miami-Dade driver

<snip>
Eight hours after 10-year-old Victor Doctor stumbled out of his adoptive father’s pickup truck overcome by toxic fumes, Florida child welfare investigators dispatched to the boy’s West Miami-Dade home on Monday were confronted with a startling question: Where was Victor’s twin sister?

Both Victor and his twin, who has not been identified by police or child welfare administrators, had been the subject of a troubling call to the Department of Children & Families’ abuse hotline only four days earlier. The children, a schoolteacher said, were being bound hand-and-feet with duct tape.

The children, the report said, were being untied only so they could eat.
But between Feb. 10 and Monday, child welfare investigators had not taken the children — who were being home-schooled, and had little visibility in the community — out of the home.

I could hardly believe it myself. I struggled with whether to even post it because it was so sickening and horrifying. We read so much here about things like this but this was especially disturbing. I swear I just want to go live in a cave somewhere.

Even more disturbing is DFCS has been to their house many times and they still allowed this monster to adopt/foster kids.

State may have missed chance to save girl found dead in truck

<snipped>
On Feb. 10, DCF received a report from a teacher that Nubia and her fraternal twin brother, Victor, age 10, were being bound by their hands and feet and made to stand in the bathtub. That day, an investigator tried to locate the children, but was told by their adoptive mother, Carmen Barahona, that she and her husband, Jorge Barahona, were separated, and that he - not she - had custody of the twins. However, a report issued later suggested that Carmen Barahona was "implicated'' in Nubia's disappearance. An investigator was told Carmen knew the whereabouts of Jorge and the children.

The roots of the tragedy that unfolded on Monday apparently began the previous week when the Barahona's granddaughter - who stayed with the couple often after school - disclosed to a therapist that terrible things were happening in her grandparents' home, a source told The Miami Herald.

The granddaughter told her therapist that she had seen the two adoptive twins bound by the hands and feet and forced to stay in the bathroom. The little girl told her therapist she wanted to open her "piggy bank'' so she could find the money to rescue the twins.

A record of the allegations said the grandmother, Carmen, called the alleged abuse "a family secret'' that was "just between us.''

Dad Planned Suicide Attempt With Boy, Girl's Body in Truck

Victor was taken to the intensive care unit, where doctors found he had suffered from several severe injuries. He had severe burns to his abdomen, upper thighs and buttocks.

He also had a fractured clavicle, a fractured arm, scarring to his buttocks and lower abdomen and ligature markings on both wrists.

Barahona suffered no burns, and when police confronted him about Victor's injuries, he allegedly told them that some of the gasoline must have splattered on the boy. COWARD SOB

Noting Barahona's account of the events was inconsistent with Victor's injuries, police charged him with child abuse. More charges could be filed.

In fact, before the adoption of the twins, the Barahonas had been reported three times for abuse, but no action was ever taken.

Man who drove dead daughter in toxic truck hospitalized~  ::snipping2::

CNN) -- A Florida man who faces a child abuse charge after his dead daughter and injured son were found in the pest-control truck he was driving was taken to a hospital Thursday after he "attempted to harm himself," police said.

Jorge Barahona, who was in custody in the Palm Beach County Jail, suffered a self-inflicted injury after deputies told him to get ready to go to a court hearing Thursday morning, West Palm Beach Police spokesman Scott Chase said.

"He immediately attempted to harm himself by thrusting himself backwards, causing an injury to his head," Chase said. "He was immediately checked by emergency personnel, and it was decided he was OK to appear in court."

However, Barahona "refused to cooperate" by not speaking, and the judge decided to delay the hearing, Chase said.

Authorities decided to take Barahona to Wellington Regional Medical Center for observation, he said.

Finally he's charged~  ::snipping2::

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Police have charged Jorge Barahona with attempted murder of his ten-year-old son, Victor. Barahona has also confessed to killing the boy's twin sister, Nubia.

In addition, authorities have now executed a search warrant for Carmen Barahona's home in Miami.

Early Thursday, police say Barahona tried to injure himself while in jail and refused to go to court where the judge set his bond at $1 million dollars.

Department of Children and Families responds to child's death  ::snipping2::

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. - David Wilkins, the head of Florida's Department of Children and Families, says the department is stunned about the death of 10-year-old girl who was found in a bag inside a pest control truck on I-95 in West Palm Beach.

Thursday afternoon, DCF spokesman Mark Riordan, had this to say: "Our level of outrage over what happened is the same as the public's and the media's." He added, "This family (Barahonas) has been deceiving us for quite some time."

Curly, I have very mixed emotions about the statement from DCF.  IMO too much was said about DCF and not enough about these children.  Lessons learned are important, but not in the same breath about the children as at this point, they don't even know how it got so mucked up.  Maybe I am just super sensitive to this, I don't know.
