At least 50 killed; tsunamis feared as massive quake hits Japan
March 11, 2011

Tokyo (CNN) -- The most powerful earthquake to hit Japan in at least 100 years unleashed walls of water Friday that swept across rice fields, engulfing towns, dragging houses onto highways and tossing cars and boats like toys.

Local media reported at least 50 deaths, with more casualties feared.

And the 8.9-magnitude quake, which struck at 2:46 p.m. local time, prompted the U.S. National Weather Service to issue a tsunami warning for at least 50 countries and territories.

Hawaiians brace for 6-foot tsunami waves
March 11, 2011

Reporting from Oahu, Hawaii and Los Angeles --
Hawaiians were bracing for tsunami wave heights of up to 6 feet high Friday morning after the devastating 8.9 earthquake near Japan.

The possible tsunami was expected to hit Hawaii at about 3 a.m. local time, or 5 a.m. Pacific time. Maximum wave heights of up to 6 feet could approach Hilo, on the northern edge of the island of Hawaii, and Haleiwa Harbor, on the northern edge of the island of Oahu, officials said.

Waikiki, the tourist hub in Honolulu, however, is protected by a barrier reef, so wave heights there were expected to be lower.
 ::snipping2::
Early Friday, authorities issued a tsunami warning for Oregon and northern and central California; Southern California was under a lower-level tsunami advisory.

Tsunami activity of more than 2 feet has struck the Pacific island of Saipan, and tsunami waves of more than 1 foot have hit Wake Island.
 ::snipping2::
Television images have already shown significant tsunami damage in Japan, inundating farmland, structures, and automobiles along the coast. As the tsunami hit land there, muddy water swept cars, roofs and churning debris across fields and flat lands. News footage shot from the air captured vehicles fleeing ahead of massive sheets of water that carried burning structures along on the surface. The tsunami overtook homes and roads, showing little sign of ebbing.

Tsunami waves hit Hawaii, sweep across islands
March 11, 2011

HONOLULU — Tsunami waves hit Hawaii in the early morning hours Friday and were sweeping through the island chain after an earthquake in Japan sparked evacuations throughout the Pacific and as far as the U.S. western coast.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Kauai was the first of the Hawaiian islands hit by the tsunami. Water rushed ashore in Honolulu, swamping the beach in Waikiki and surging over the break wall in the world-famous resort but stopping short of the area's high-rise hotels.

Waves about 3 feet high were recorded on Oahu and Kauai, and officials warned that the waves would continue and could become larger.
 ::snipping2::

Waves are predicted to hit the western coast of the United States between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. EST Friday. Evacuations were ordered in parts of Washington and Oregon, and people near the beach and in low-lying coastal areas in Santa Barbara County, California, were told to move immediately inland to higher ground.

Hundreds of Bodies Found in Japan After Massive Tsunami Spawned by Earthquake

Japanese police say 200 to 300 bodies have been found in a northeastern coastal area where a massive earthquake spawned a ferocious tsunami Friday that swept away boats, cars and homes.

The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake -- the largest in Japan's history -- unleashed a 23-foot (7-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks for hours, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0.

Small tsunami waves in O.C. by 8:37
March 11th, 2011, 5:00 am · 2 Comments · posted by Kevin Sablan

A tsunami advisory for coastal Orange County, and all of the California coast south of Point Conception, has been issued by the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. An advisory is a suggestion to stay away from the shore because of the likelihood of strong currents. It is not a call for evacuation.

Officials were warning residents, however, to stay clear of the beach in Orange County because of possibly dangerous currents and tidal surges, including in Seal Beach, where the pier and beach areas were closed.

Waves from a tsunami caused by an 8.9 magnitude Japan earthquake are estimated to arrive in the county at approximately 8:37 this morning, at heights of no more than 2 feet.

The warning center has a page devoted to tsunami safety rules and a list of frequently asked questions about tsunamis.

JUNEAU, Alaska

The massive earthquake that struck Japan late Thursday triggered a tsunami which is sweeping along the Alaska coastline.

The surge first hit the Aleutian Chain and was expected to pass Southeast Alaska early Friday morning.

A strectch of coastline between Attu and Amchitka Pass was under a tsunami warning, while the rest of the state faced a less-severe tsunami advisory.

A tide guage at Shemya, Alaska, monitored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed water rising 5 feet early Friday. Meters near Adak and Dutch Harbor showed smaller rises.

The State Emergency Coordination Center activated late Thursday and plans to remain active until all Alaska communties are in the clear. There have been no reports of damage.

“Many of the communities now threatened by these tsunamis have recently received new all-hazard emergency warning sirens and tsunami response training,” said Maj. Gen Thomas H. Katkus in a press release.

According to a statement from the Kenai Peninsula Borough, tsunami sirens sounded in Seward, Homer, and Seldovia, even though there was no warning issued.

The Borough expected wave heights to be no more than a foot in Homer and Seward when they came ashore between 4 and 5 am.

People urged to higher ground following Tsunami warning

By Tim Novotny KCBY News

Story Published: Mar 11, 2011 at 6:03 AM PST

An 8.9 earthquake off the coast of Japan on Thursday night triggers a Tsunami warning along the Oregon Coast for Friday morning. Officials estimate a wave anywhere from one foot to six feet in size.

People in low-lying areas are being asked to evacuate to higher ground
.

Shelter locations are open at Bandon High School in the Gym, the Coos Bay Fire Station on S. Wall in Empire, Hillcrest Elementary in North Bend and the North Bend Community Center.

Bay Area Hospital is asking folks NOT to come to their facility unless they are having an emergency. However, Southwestern Oregon Community College is being used as a gathering place in their parking lots.

There is also one school closure to note, as Kingsview Christian School in North Bend has canceled classes for the day on Friday.

People are being urged to stay away from the coastline and low-lying areas until an all-clear signal is given.

The Tsunami Sirens in Coos Bay, Charleston and North Bend first rang out at 3:00 a.m. on Friday morning, with numerous emergency responders, including those from the Coos County Sheriff's Office, going out to alert people in the danger zones.

SEATTLE - The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a tsunami advisory for the entire Washington coast. Oregon is under a tsunami warning.

The tsunami advisory in Washington also affects land areas adjacent to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the northern inland waters.

The advisory was triggered by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake that struck near the east coast of Japan.

 The initial wave on the Washington coast is expected sometime after 7:00 A.M.

Officials in two coastal Washington counties used a reverse 911 system, phoning residents on the coast and in low-lying areas and asking them to move to higher ground.

"We certainly don't want to cry wolf," said Sheriff Scott Johnson of Washington's Pacific County. "We just have to hope we're doing the right thing based on our information. We don't want to be wrong and have people hurt or killed.

Grays Harbor County Sheriff Michael Whelan says an emergency center in Montesano is now open. It's located at 310 W Spruce Ave.

In Oregon, sirens blasted in some coastal communities and at least one hotel was evacuated in the northern part of the state.

Tsunami Slams Into Santa Cruz Harbor; Crescent City

Posted: 6:44 am PST March 11, 2011Updated: 10:48 am PST March 11, 2011
SAN FRANCISCO -- A tsunami generated from a massive killer earthquake in Japan slammed into two Northern California coastal communities Friday, capsizing and damaging several boats and leaving the waters littered with debris.

Officials reported that the tide pulled back about 8 inches over a five-minute period nearby at Pillar Point, setting the scene for the destruction in Santa Cruz. At least 15 fishing and pleasure crafts were ripped from their moorings and heavily damaged during the surge.

Two docks also sustained major damage during the surge. Local officials had declared an emergency and estimated the damage at $2 million.

Meanwhile, to the north in Crescent City, the tsunami caused heavy damage to the harbor town.

45,000 flee nuclear blast at Fukushima No. 1 plant in Japan

    * March 11, 2011 11:00PM

UPDATE 10pm (March 12) : A NUCLEAR power plant exploded, a day after the huge Japanese earthquake damaged the facility's cooling system.

Nuclear authorities had earlier warned that the Fukushima No.1 plant, about 250km northeast of Tokyo, an urban area of 30 million people, "may be experiencing a nuclear meltdown".

The plant's cooling system was damaged in the quake that hit on Friday, leaving the government scrambling to fix the problem and evacuate more than 45,000 residents within a 10km radius.

Public broadcaster NHK reported that a blast had been heard at about 5.30pm (Melbourne time) and showed delayed footage of the explosion and smoke billowing from the site, also reporting that the reactor building had been destroyed.

TV channels warned nearby residents to stay indoors, turn off airconditioners and not to drink tap water. People going outside were also told to avoid exposing their skin and to cover their faces with masks and wet towels.

Japan 8.9-magnitude earthquake sparks massive rescue operation

AT least 613 people have been confirmed dead as Japan mobilises 50,000 military and other personnel to spearhead a Herculean rescue effort.

Every wing of the Self Defence Forces was thrown into frantic service, with hundreds of ships, aircraft and vehicles headed to the northeast coast where at least 1000 people were feared dead and entire neighbourhoods had vanished.

As emergency staff in the quake-prone archipelago dug through rubble and plucked survivors off the roofs of submerged houses, Prime Minister Naoto Kan warned that day one after the catastrophe was a crucial window for survivors.

"I realised the huge extent of the tsunami damage," the centre-left premier said after taking a helicopter tour of the apocalyptic scenes, before meeting his cabinet ministers for an emergency meeting in Tokyo.

"What used to be residential areas were mostly swept away in many coastal areas and fires are still blazing there," he told them.
