President Obama wrote a riveting opinion piece on gun control.  "President Obama: We must seek agreement on gun reforms"

What about welfare reform?  Welfare for the needy and not the greedy?  Maybe if we paid less to the greedy, we'd have more money for middle class families?  Lower taxes?

What ideas might help innovate the necessary goal of welfare reform?

I'm willing to bet that responsible, law-abiding gun owners agree that we should be able to keep an irresponsible, law-breaking few - dangerous criminals and fugitives, for example - from getting their hands on a gun in the first place.

Maybe the responsible users of the welfare system are willing to keep the greedy from abusing the system?

What are Obama's suggestions?

Quote
First, we should begin by enforcing laws that are already on the books. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System is the filter that's supposed to stop the wrong people from getting their hands on a gun. Bipartisan legislation four years ago was supposed to strengthen this system, but it hasn't been properly implemented. It relies on data supplied by states - but that data is often incomplete and inadequate. We must do better.

Why not enforce the existing immigration laws?  Deport those here illegally?

Why aren't we doing background checks on those that are applying?  Are you here legally?  Do you have a Social Security number?  Immigration papers?

Why aren't we stopping the 'wrong' people from getting their hands on a welfare check?  Cashing those checks at casinos, cruise ships, buying big screen TVs with money that should have been used for clothing and school supplies?

How many of those receiving welfare benefits have no government issued ID?  No Social Security number?

Quote
Second, we should in fact reward the states that provide the best data - and therefore do the most to protect our citizens.

Maybe welfare requirements should be pushed back to the states.  I would imagine people in the community might notice long before the folks in DC if there are trends in welfare fraud, abuse, and greed?

Quote
Third, we should make the system faster and nimbler. We should provide an instant, accurate, comprehensive and consistent system for background checks to sellers who want to do the right thing, and make sure that criminals can't escape it.

Background checks for welfare recipients?  Those applying?  E-Verify?

One national welfare database?  A requirement that every child getting benefits provide a Social Security number?  If your child doesn't have a SS number or isn't here legally, why aren't they collecting in their country of origin?  Why would a SS number collect in more than one state?  Why would a toddler be working a $80,000 a year construction job?

Why isn't more being done to help the needy and not supply the greedy with a never ending lottery payment?

There was also an effort, I believe in Illinois to publish the names and addresses of gun owners/permit holders.

Why not publish the names, addresses, and amounts of benefits received by those on welfare?  Hmmm...the Jones family gets $1,000 for housing, $2,000 for GA, $1,600 for food stamps, $1,000 for Medicaid, $800 for heating...

Maybe there are some folks that would look and say "Wow, the family next door is named Smith, not Jones.  Maybe this is fraud?

Maybe there are some folks that would look and say "Wow, the family next door is named Smith, not Jones, the kids names are the same.  Mr. Smith works two jobs, and Mrs. Smith works a lot of overtime.  They can't possibly be collecting welfare.  Could they?"  Maybe this is fraud?

Mrs. Jones, gets food stamps, maybe I should send her a little something.  Retirement must be hard on her.

Wow.  The address next door shows 5 families are living in that single family home...I've only seen one single mom and her two kids...

Why doesn't Obama apply some of his gun control ideas to welfare reform.

Welfare should be for the needy, not the greedy.  End waste, fraud, and abuse of our tax dollars.
